Gene Upshaw is telling the agents to prepare as if they are entering an uncapped year. How will this change Saban's Game plan going into FA?

i think there may be alot of 1 year contracts being signed i mean i bet you if there is no cap u may see peterson brees and TO on our team and im sure all the TO haters wouldnt mind him for a one year deal bc like the eagles there would be no problems im just really hating this no cap thing it really bothers me

I believe the uncapped year would take place in 2007.
You're right. But 2006 will be hugely affected. I haven't had the time to get my mind around how, really. But, read the posts on the Miami Dolphins page. It's really deep.

I doubt that Brees signs a one year contract. Even with 2007 being uncapped. First of all, it's not a lock, there is still a full year before that happens, so to sign a deal without an assurance wouldn't be in his best interest. Also, that's the whole reason he was unhappy with San Diego, is that he doesn't want a one year deal, he wants a long term contract. I think if he finds one to his liking, regardless of what happens in 2007 being possible, I think he'll sign it.

I think this may have already been covered, but I have to ask...if no deal is reached by the March 1 deadline, is it still possible to reach a deal at some point during 2006 to put a cap on the 2007 season or is it set in stone as an uncapped year if the deal isn't done by March 1?

Well Upshaw said they have until next Friday which is the 3rd and I think if they dont have an agreement by then that there will be an uncapped 2007. Then if they get a deal after that it would affect the 2008 season so there would be one year uncapped unless like someone mentioned in another post maybe have a strike and have no 2007 season at all.

This is just a guess cause I dont really know but the way he said it would make it seem like this is the case!

--The thought of entering the free-agent signing period without the NFL having reached agreement with its players' union on an extension of the Collective Bargaining Agreement isn't appealing to Nick Saban.
Miami's head coach admits his team's ability to augment his roster through free agency would be greatly diminished if the CBA agreement were to remain as is when the NFL's signing period begins March 3.
"It's going to be a very difficult circumstance for people to operate systematically and have the kind of money to be actively involved in free agency," Saban said. "It changes some of the rules relative to the system in how you can calculate a guy's salary."

Don't think the '07 CAP will influence the decisions made this offseason.

All the '07 CAP [or lack there of] will do is facilitate the 'go for broke' mentality next offseason ... with a bunch of sort term [1 - 2 year] contracts - and then clean up the mess in '08.

It should work out quite well for us !

The 2007 season would be uncapped and the possibility of not having a 2008 season looms large. As long as owners like Snyder and Jones don't want revenue sharing the league is in trouble (which is only one of the many issues on the table). Have they learned nothing from MLB??

Well it will have an effect in that we will not know that future cap numbers will be and will not want to sign long term contracts. Saban even said that an uncapped 2007 means no long term deals. Also, with an uncapped 2007 I can see very little FA movement until the CBA gets done

I'll post this anywhere the CBA is mentioned, this deal NEEDS to get done. Pro ball is so pouplar for several reasons, one of the biggest being that even the smaller teams have something to root for. If this just becomes a bidding war for whoever can buy the best team, interest will drop quickly.

And really, how many of us will sit all the way through several Dolphins/Cardinals or Dolphins/Texans blowout games? Mid-way through the 3rd when victory is ensured, flip the channel. That's one of the few downsides of college ball, this tends to happen quite frequently. Don't let the NFL become a battle between the have and have-nots.

Quite important that this gets resolved for the future of football. What I like about footballo is that any team is competitive on any given day. Who wants to see 5 undefeated teams in a single season, repetitive super bowls and a pro bowl consisting pretty much of a Cowboys/Redskins vs Raiders/Patriots

Amen to that.
