Ok, say we go ahead and draft Jake Long #1 overall. There is a good chance that could happen, and he at worst would be the starting right tackle this year. How would drafting him though affect a potential long term deal with Vernon Carey in the offseason?
Carey hasn't been an elite NFL player, but he has been very solid during his career and probably will eventually make the Pro Bowl. I doubt Jake Long would be drafted with the idea to be a 10+ year player at RT in the NFL. The Dolphins will likely want to move him in 2009 to LT or even go this year with him in that position.
With Carey entering his contract year, and the probability that if Jake Long was drafted he would be in line for the LT position, doesn't this hurt the odds that Carey will sign long term? Jake Long would likely be getting a deal with $33-35 million in guaranteed money, and you know Carey, who will be a 5 year veteran, will want to cash in.
Alan Faneca became the highest paid offensive lineman this offseason when he signed a 5 year, $40 million deal with $21 million guaranteed. Fanace is an aging GUARD and he hit the jackpot. Add in that Jake Long, who will only have a rookie season under his belt, will have signed an even bigger deal then that, and you have to think Carey is going to want a similar size deal. Don't you think Carey, the foundation of the line for the past few years, will not like having a rookie being paid more then he was?
If we go in a different direction at #1, then maybe we could get Carey to sign for something similar to Faneca and he would be happy being the highest paid lineman. I just wonder how he will feel if Long gets more in his long term deal then what Miami will offer Carey in his long term extension
Hopefully though if we go with Jake Long, the fact that Carey has been born and raised in Miami will help get some sort of discount.
