Ok, say we go ahead and draft Jake Long #1 overall. There is a good chance that could happen, and he at worst would be the starting right tackle this year. How would drafting him though affect a potential long term deal with Vernon Carey in the offseason?

Carey hasn't been an elite NFL player, but he has been very solid during his career and probably will eventually make the Pro Bowl. I doubt Jake Long would be drafted with the idea to be a 10+ year player at RT in the NFL. The Dolphins will likely want to move him in 2009 to LT or even go this year with him in that position.

With Carey entering his contract year, and the probability that if Jake Long was drafted he would be in line for the LT position, doesn't this hurt the odds that Carey will sign long term? Jake Long would likely be getting a deal with $33-35 million in guaranteed money, and you know Carey, who will be a 5 year veteran, will want to cash in.

Alan Faneca became the highest paid offensive lineman this offseason when he signed a 5 year, $40 million deal with $21 million guaranteed. Fanace is an aging GUARD and he hit the jackpot. Add in that Jake Long, who will only have a rookie season under his belt, will have signed an even bigger deal then that, and you have to think Carey is going to want a similar size deal. Don't you think Carey, the foundation of the line for the past few years, will not like having a rookie being paid more then he was?

If we go in a different direction at #1, then maybe we could get Carey to sign for something similar to Faneca and he would be happy being the highest paid lineman. I just wonder how he will feel if Long gets more in his long term deal then what Miami will offer Carey in his long term extension

Hopefully though if we go with Jake Long, the fact that Carey has been born and raised in Miami will help get some sort of discount.

Excellent question Nub, does moving Carey back to right tackle lower his demands?

If he has a stellar year I think you have to pay him.

It might in the best interests of the Dolphins long term to get something done now.

I think the front office will want to sign Carey to a long-term deal even before the season starts if we draft Long. The whole point of drafting Jake Long would be to stabilize the offensive line and Carey has shown he can play very well on the right side so you don't want to lose him.

Carey's probably going to want a lot of money and I think we'll give it to him.

It wouldn't. Carey's play on this his contract year, will affect his extension. That and how deep OT will be next season. Also, don't be surprised if the "second" OT taken in this draft come the second day of the draft impresses, that may have more of an influence than Jake Long.

Jake Long will be our "LT", while Vernon Carey will be our "RT". I'd say that the second day OT pick(since we need a 'starting' OT "AND" at least one backup OT out of this draft) will have more of a bearing on if/how much we offer Carey.....or if he ends up our "first" in a looooooooooooong time that we are forced to "gasp", use the FRANCHISE TAG on!!! Wow!!!

Carey's worth the investment, I think. Pay him to be our long-term (7+ more years) answer at Tackle.
He'll probably play LT this year (assuming we draft Jake Long); then, we probably switch them in 2009 for the rest of their careers.

Of course, this all assumes we draft J. Long #1. I think C. Long #1 is more likely, with a RT drafted with 2b or 3.

^this

We need Chris Long or Vernon Gholston. I'll be disappointed with anyone else

please explain to me our need of a olb, our 2 best players are olbs. we dont have a starting tackle or guard, so please explain to me our need for one of those guys.

because we arent going to be going to the super bowl this season. We need to add youth to our team. Taylor is on his way out, Porter's geting up there in age, and it's a deep OT class. We can always find a first round talent OT in the second round.

I personally feel Jake Long would want this team to keep Carey. I mean, Carey isn't really a Pro bowler or great LT but he is definitely solid. There is no doubt that Jake is better LT talent then Carey. So to upgrade at LT where it is already good only helps the team.

We all know Carey graded higher at RT. If we get Long and keep Carey our 4/5 of our line is solidified for 7-10 years. Our line would look really good and potentiall be a top 6-7 O line in the NFL.

So IMO getting Jake may not effect the extension itself, but it would make the FO people realize what they could potentially have in their O-line for years to come.

This is why i feel Jake Long is the best option. By taking Long we kill 2 birds with 1 stone. OUR LT and RT positions and almost complete our O-line rebuilding. You can't say the same with taking Chris Long. We still need younger and other LB'ERS and Lineman. So IMO it is in the best interest to atleast complete area of the rebuilding then move on.

Just my humble opinion

I also feel you take the best option. If we are looking at QB or O-line then we need to take the best. Don't gamble on Flacco or Henne. Don't gamble on Baker or Collis. We have the opportunity to get the best graded guy at their respective position. I don't believe in chancing VALUE.

It's easier to forgive or ease the pain if we selected Ryan or Long over 2nd rounders because atleast we took the best. However, if we draft a 2nd round QB or LT due to value and they don't pan out, then they only have themselves to blame and it would irritate me more because we "CHOSE" to pass up on the best in the draft trying to get cute and "HOPE" that one of these 2nd round guys proves to be more useful. The only guys I would chance on Value is Brohm. Only because 10 months ago he was the #1 guy. I still don't understand his stock drop personally. BUT IMO if we get both Brohm and Long we get 2 guys who 10 months ago were top 3 guys. I know 10 months later, thing change, buit IMO Brohm's talent hasn't

Like I said, whether we truly are looking for a QB or NOT. One thing is a guarantee. Had we selected QUINN last year Ryan/Brohm/Flacco and Henne wouldn't even be a thought in anyones minds this year. But because we passed on Quinn, a top 10 talent, and went for a 2nd round talent everyone believes or thinks QB might be an option.

1st round talent respectively gets more time to show their stuff then later rounds. Look at Jason Allen. Had we drafted him after the 1st do you think he would even be in the equation of potential starter for us? I like Allen too and think he can be very good for us

This isn't always the case. Just normally from my perspective

I'm sure C is a 7 time Carey's gonna want money but Faneca is a 7 time probowler and Carey's never made the probowl...he SHOULDN'T expect that kind of contract....however,he'll get some money to stay with us either as a RT or LT.....if he does leave and Jake Long is the starting LT then getting a RT is a little easier than LT imo.......not sure we're drafting 2 OT's tho I think we'll get 1 plus a guard...I expect us to get another lineman after the june cuts.

Ozzy rules!!

I dont think it would be a bad idea to sign Carey to a contract extension before the start of the regular season while we still have a hefty amount of cap room left this year.

Drafting Jake Long and securing Carey are 2 HUGE components BEFORE the season starts . . . u do that, then we have several options for that final guard spot . . . but the key positions on the line would be set.

I wouldn't be against REsigning Shelton for RG and put him and CArey over there (remember the success they had in 2006) and put Smiley and Jake on the Left side . . . with Satele in the middle . . . sick, sick sick. I actually think it may unfold that way.

RT's get paid significantly less then LT's. That's just the NFL informal pay scale.

I would actually guess once VC sees the kinda cash he can make as a LT he'l bolt.
