How would Vernon fare at LT?

Lets look at what we have currently for O-Lineman:

Damion McIntosh - IMO will win the LT job

Jeno James - Will remain the starting LG

Seth McKinney - Will compete with Hadnot and possibly St. Clair for the starting Center spot. I believe he loses and will be a backup

Vernon Carey - Will compete for LT job but I see him as the starting RG

Strockar McDougle - Will compete for RT spot and I think he will nudge out St. Clair and win the starting job

Rex Hadnot - Will compete for Center job and possibly a guard position. Most likely a backup/rotation player this year.

John St. Clair - Will have shot at RT, LT and center. I really see him as the new center.

Damion Cook - Will be the main interior backup(Center and guard positions)

Wade Smith - I believe he will be cut during TC

Greg Jerman - Will probably be cut but has a shot at the 9th and final Lineman spot

Taylor Whitley - Will compete with Smith and Jerman for last roster spot. I think he might make the roster if no other Lineman are signed or drafted.

Jamil Soriano - Just a Training camp body

Victor Leyva - Just a Training camp body

Tony Pape - Back to the Practice Squad this year

Eric Wilson - Just a Training camp body

Rodney Reed - Just a Training camp body

Jason Thomas - Just a Training camp body

St. Clair does not have what it takes to be a center in the NFL. that is why he was even projected as a tackle comming out in the draft. also he NEVER played center in St. Louis he was always a right tackle, and when turley got there he was a back up. also do you really think St. Louis would have brought in 37 year old Dave Wahlobaugh to play center if St. Clair was any good? i see either Mckinny or a rookie playing center for us this year.

Vernon Carey was injured as a senior at UM

It's true, he played worse as a senior guard than as a junior at RT, but not a completely fair analysis because he was battling injuries all season as a senior. I don't think he gets out of the blocks quick enough to play LT.

I believe that coach HH will have a fair competition in all positions of the OL. True that some players played well last year and the line did improve, but nobody has done enough to come in to trainning camp as a set starter. Even James will have competition at his spot, although I think is his to loose. This is how i see such competition:

LT: McIntosh vs Carey vs St Clair
LG: James vs St Clair
C: McInney vs Hadnot vs Rook
RG: Hadnot vs Carey
RT: McDougle vs St Clair

Nublar,
you really think we are going to keep 10 Linemen? I may be wrong, but I thought we usually only keep 9... sometimes even 8.

With the arrival of Stockar McDougle at RT, there has been great speculation that Vernon Carey will make the switch to left tackle. Even Saban has said in an interview that he feels that Vernon is the player he feels can contribute the most to this line and said that he could be "dominating" some day (and this was after we had signed McDougle). It would be a waste of a pick not letting Vernon have a chance to win a starting spot and i feel that he will make the move to LT (forgive me if it has already been noted that he will definitely be making the switch). My question is how do you think he would fare? do you think he could beat out Mcintosh?

If he does move to LT and becomes effective for us then we would have that stud LT we have been looking for for a long time, and IMO would be a lot closer to a SB championship.

I would also like to take this opportunity to ask who you think we will have playing at RG for us next season?

i think he will end up like he did last year......benched!!! hes a guard or right tackle...not left

Don't count Wade Smith out yet. He was ruined by bad coaching. People don't realize that we picked him in the 3rd round as a project, he was a forner TE that needed to be coached up before all of his talent could be seen. He shouldn't have been counted on as a starter so early in his career.

To that I would have to ask? Wasn't Carey competing to start last year at right tackle?

If he couldn't win that job how will he win the left tackle job?

I think Carey is a guy with all the physical talent you would want, the question is does he have it upstairs and does he have the will and heart to do what it takes to be a top pro?

Or will he just be another Eddie Blake?
