In all three major sports. Especially in football. With everyone transferring and UM in shambles, and the FIU football team really improving, and we all saw how close the last FIU/UM game was.

In the next 20 years, with 1/3rd of all college graduates in Dade county coming from FIU, FIU will definately overthrow UM as the most popular team, especially if they start winning.
 
Are you kidding me? FIU will overtake Miami as the most popular team in South Florida? 1/3 of those FIU graduates you speak of are Hurricane fans. Keep it real man. How does the Univeristy of Miami benefit at all from playing FIU in any of the three major sports? The last game between the Hurricanes and FIU...we won 23 - 9. FIU was shut out in the first half. 9 points man...9 points against the worst Hurricanes team since the 1970's.

The Hurricanes basketball team played FIU less than a month ago. We DOMINATED as well. 26 point win for the Hurricanes with three players hitting double figures. The previous year, we won by 16. Before that, a 23 point beatdown.

The baseball team is even more dominate than the football team. 11 College World Series appearances in Jim Morris's 15 seasons as head coach. We played FIU last season and actually LOST 6 - 3.

Were do you get that the Hurricanes are scared to play the Golden Panthers in any sport? Keep in mind that sports is a business. If FIU is offered more money to play another team, they'll go that route. Miami is a private college so keep that in mind. There's not a lot of money being generated by our Athletic Department and the department is operating in the red every single year. It doesn't make a lot of sense for us to shell out more cash when we can get Charleston Southern at half-price depsite Miami and FIU being separated by only 8 miles.

How can that be? You guys are THE U. One of the most prominent university athletics programs ever. Why are the donors not helping out? To think FIU won't be popular in Miami is ridiculous. The Canes have been playing since 1926, but it hasn't been since the mid 80's that they started winning championships. I don't expect FIU to win national titles in the next 20 years, but they're on the right track to the lesser bowl games, which is better than nothing. I'm just bummed UM backed off playing FIU in the three major sports. Could've been a good rivalry.
 
As a life long cane fan with only a city affiliation to the team I will tell you that going to another University and having them win changes people.

I watched the canes from age 7 with my family (all Cane fans and Alumi). I went to UF for undergrad. Wore my hurricane's outfit for the Gator/Cane game (got heckled at booed up at Ben Hill Griffith hard for that). Over time I rooted for the Gators when not playing UM.... watching them win a championship.. then going to FSU for grad school.

Loyalties can change over time. I root for whoever is doing best now. Right now I'm #1 Gator, #2 Nole (I never though I would ever say that), #3 Cane #4 Any other Florida team #5 Any other SEC team.

If FIU ever gets close to a national title (or wins one) they will take MANY people (fans and prospects) away from Miami. I guarantee it.

Yeah, we are THE U. However, "The U" is simply a nickname and nothing more. With a nickname doesn't come tons and tons of money. The University of Miami is a PRIVATE INSTITUTION. I can't stress that enough. In being a private institution, we have 1/3 of the number of undergraduates as FIU. Miami currently has under 11,000 undergaduates. FIU has roughly 30,000. When it comes to athletics, the majority of the money for coaching salaries, etc., come from Alumni and boosters like myself. When you have such a small Alumni, you're not going to have the funds of an Ohio State or Texas. FIU has three times the Alumni as Miami and can therefore donate more to their school's Athletic Department. That's why FIU has better facilities and can afford to build a new stadium. Miami can't. Our funds are concentrated on labs and academics for students. Miami has a large sidewalk Alum but that's it. Notre Dame is the same way.

Miami hasn't backed off of playing FIU. No one needs to prove that the talent FIU has is FAR inferior to that of Miami. It's not debatable. How does it benefit Miami to play FIU? If you're bummed about Miami not playing FIU in football, shouldn't you be bummed about Florida State and Florida not playing FIU as well? If not, then your argument is simply based on proximity. Correct? Look, I'm bummed that we don't play Florida every year anymore. But from a financial standpoint, I understand. If the Gators would move their annual game with Georgia back to Athens and Gainesville, they could probably work us in. When we play FIU, we have to pay FIU to play us because they're not in a BCS conference. That's why we elected to play Charleston Southern this season. They're a I-AA team and we didn't have to pay them as much as we would have had to pay FIU. Financially, this makes sense.

Football is a business first, a sport second.
 
The talent is currently inferior, but look at USF and FAU. FIU is heading in that direction with the new coaching staff and better recruiting. Hilton is going to be a monster player.
 
Maybe they are but what does that have to do with the original topic? We're not scared to play FIU. We have to play our conference games and then our ouf of conference schedule. It's much harder now to play teams like FIU. We don't play USF and we don't play FAU either. What makes you think that the Miami Hurricanes are scared to play FIU?
 
Maybe you're right, that it comes down to financial reasons. God bless the state public institution system! :)

But I'm not kidding when I say FIU will be the more popular school in Miami in the next 30-50 years.
