It’s a passing league. You win or lose with the ball in the air. That’s true. But it’s also true you can’t have a glaring deficiency in any area and that’s why Priority No. 1 for the Dolphins this off-season was fixing the run defense.
They couldn’t have done much more to help this problem. Ndamunkong Suh, the game’s best interior defensive lineman, was signed to the biggest defensive contract in history. Jordan Phillips, a boom-or-bust guy, was a second-round pick. C.J. Mosley, an 11-year veteran, was signed for depth. Starter Earl Mitchell and reserves Anthony Johnson and A.J. Francis are back.
Out went aging Randy Starks, who faded as the year went on, and Jared Odrick, who was asked to take on multiple blockers instead of using his strength of quickness to attack.
The only thing the Dolphins could have done to bolster the rushing defense more was to move middle linebacker Koa Misi back outside for a proven run stopper. But let’s be fair. Misi played hurt much of last year. There’s confidence inside the team he can play middle linebacker.
Suh (and Mosley) were part of the NFL’s best rushing defense last year. He said this spring getting run on is, “embarrassing.” The Dolphins were embarrased last year.
Rushing defense won’t win you a season.
But as last year showed it can lose you one.
