1. It's nice of Steve Ross to give Joe Philbin a contract extension. It offers some financial security to Philbin. It suggests a measure of loyalty from the owner. But it ultimately means nothing at all as far as his future as coach,
as I blogged when Ross suggested a couple of weeks ago that one was coming. This is simply a matter between Ross and Philbin, whose four-year contract was set to run out next year before the extension, as reported by The Miami Herald.
Ross has extended contracts previously with high-level employees. Coach Tony Sparano's contract was extended after the 2011 season. General Manager Jeff Ireland's contract was extended after the 2012 season. Both were fired when the team didn't win those years. You can expect the same idea will hold if Philbin doesn't win for a fourth season as coach in 2015.
The purpose of a contract extension supposedly is to keep a coach from having a final-year status over his head to players and the public. But that's where we are. It's about results. As Ross said in announcing Philbin was returning in a quote sure to be repeated all 2015: "They say patience is a virtue, you know. But I'm expecting big things next year -- I will tell you that."
