1. It's nice of Steve Ross to give Joe Philbin a contract extension. It offers some financial security to Philbin. It suggests a measure of loyalty from the owner. But it ultimately means nothing at all as far as his future as coach, as I blogged when Ross suggested a couple of weeks ago that one was coming. This is simply a matter between Ross and Philbin, whose four-year contract was set to run out next year before the extension, as reported by The Miami Herald.

Ross has extended contracts previously with high-level employees. Coach Tony Sparano's contract was extended after the 2011 season. General Manager Jeff Ireland's contract was extended after the 2012 season. Both were fired when the team didn't win those years. You can expect the same idea will hold if Philbin doesn't win for a fourth season as coach in 2015.

The purpose of a contract extension supposedly is to keep a coach from having a final-year status over his head to players and the public. But that's where we are. It's about results. As Ross said in announcing Philbin was returning in a quote sure to be repeated all 2015: "They say patience is a virtue, you know. But I'm expecting big things next year -- I will tell you that."

Say what you want about Stephen Ross, but I sure as hell would want to work for this man. The only organization where you can screw up all you want and get rewarded for it.

Nothing Spehen Ross has done means much for the future of the dolphins in a positive manner.

Hyde is right, but it is important to future hires. It is a jerk move to make a guy coach as a lame duck unless the coach wants to.

I disagree. Philbin has done nothing to warrant an extension. So what if he is a lame duck? Everybody knows unless he gets into the playoffs he is gone with or without an extension. Jerry Jones did that with Jason Garrett and things turned out okay.

It has no impact either way. People are not going to assume that Philbin is long term just because of a stupid extension.
Lame duck or not has little to no impact when people know the reality that it means nothing either way.

BAsically Im saying no coordinator is going to decide well I will sign with Miami now because I know he got an extension unless they are completely oblivious.

In the end it's Ross's money and if he want to keep paying guys free years thats on him. It does set a bad precedent that you actually have to earn an extension

This might have been a piece if advice given to Ross; a lame duck HC means no real good DC will want to come here. Even if the extension is a token gesture it has some value.

Is it true that Philbin got an extension of TWO more years? If so, that is absurd... Ross is just flushing money down the toilet and sending an awful message

I am still holding out hope that Joe is fired or resigns.

I am really glad that most of you probably don't own business in which you have contract employees.

The extension is standard procedure. If the Dolphins do good Philbin is locked in. If they do bad he is gone anyways. Psychologically having a coach in his last year of the contract would not entice FAs who have long term interests or new coaches come to Miami.
