This may be a totally crazy notion, but I had a thought.
Part of what has the Dolphins 1-4 was Saban hoping that Culpepper was ready to perform better than he did (in terms of being more mobile, and in terms of adapting better to pocket passing). It took us 4 games to find out, and for Saban to decide to sit Daunte til he is ready. So the real question is, did Saban wait too long to switch to Joey and give Daunte more time to heal and adapt his game too?
Well, I think what killed Saban, and us, was the schedule being weak. It sounds counter-intuitive, but because we played the lowly Titans we managed to eke out a victory. Well, that makes it hard to want to change QB's and gave us hope Daunte would be okay. Then with Houston coming up, why consider changing? Look at the week Brunell had against them before we played them. It should have been a very promising opportunity to continue Daunte's improvement against the worst defense in the NFL. So Saban keeps Daunte in.
My question is, if we had played New England in week three and the Jags or BEars in week four, would things have played out differently? I absolutely think so. I think our week three loss, putting us at 0-3 and with another tough defesnive opponent the next week would have precipitated Saban's move to Joey a game sooner. Would we have won that game? Who knows, since it would have been against a better team anyways.
Of course, IF that had happened then we'd still have entered game 5 with a 1-3 record, but probably better prepared to play with a QB that had a week under his belt in the offense.
This is ALL hypothetical and really pointless in terms of where we go from here, but I thought it was interesting that our weak schedule may have actually delaye4d Saban's switch to Joey and, perhaps, hurt us instead of helped us.
