Sorry to start another Pat White thread, just couldn't find a topic that covered this.
Just an honest question. I haven't really been able to figure this out.
If I understand the rule correctly, we can't have White come in as a 3rd QB unless the Chads both get hurt. (I'm assuming he doesn't take the 2nd spot this year).
Does that mean he will have to be listed as a WR or RB, if we want to play him in the Wildcat? I can't see benching Cobbs in favor of him (could be wrong), and in that case there are going to be quite a few WR cut.
If anyone could enlighten me, it would be greatly appreciated.

pat white will be in chad penningtons spot during the wildcat.. sometimes he will be in ronnie browns spot, ronnie brown will be in ricky's spot.. and davone bess will be on the outside, his position name is just a name.. if hes an active player the qb situation doesnt really matter there can be 3 qb's on the field at once just as long as there all on the active to participate in the game list.. your given an emergency player but doesnt mean you have to use it.

you have 45 player active on sunday's u have to designate a Emergncy #3 QB so all u have to do is make someone else the #3 QB

thats why john beck is cut, pat white is our 3rd Qb, wildcat QB, and we will see him probably as a reciever and a third down running back if we need passing yards

I'll try and summarize.

First off, Patrick White cannot be designated as the #3 emergency quarterback, or else he will be essentially inactive on game day. They didn't draft him to be inactive. If the plan is to play him in the wild cat, #3 QB is not an option for him.

So the options are to make Chad Henne the #3 'ermergency quarterback' OR don't have a #3 quarterback.

You don't have to list him as a WR/RB for him to be active, you can list him as a QB, you can list 10 QB's if you want, but all except the #3 emergency QB count toward the 45 man game day active list. The #3 QB spot is an extra spot and has specific rules (if they enter the game before the 4th quarter, the other 2 QB's cannot return)

Also, if you are going to not use Henne as the #3 QB, you essentially lose an active spot for another position on game day, but you don't have to cut anyone based off that. 45 man active roster is different than the 53-man roster, and #3 quarterback decision doesn't effect the 53-man roster.

you don't have to designate an emergency QB...you can, but it is not necessary. Teams who run with only 2 QB's (like the Colts) don't designate a #3 quarterback, they just dress 45 instead of 46.

I think how we are planning on using White is lining him up in no partcular set postion. We are just going to either snap, pitch, or handoff the ball to him. Then he is going to either run it for a TD or wing a deep bomb into the endzone then run out and cath his own pass. I think we are going to see a heavy defensive draft next season because we are going to be switching to a 4-5 man offense. White is going to score so fast that we are going to need everyone else on our roster for defensive rotations.

NFL'S "third-quarterback" rule -- sometimes misunderstood:
Seventeen years ago (1991) the third-quarterback rule was instituted to enable teams to have an emergency quarterback available who was not on the 45-man game-day active roster, since many teams, for strategic purposes, only carried two quarterbacks on their game-day roster.
Everybody thinks they understand the NFL's "third-quarterback" rule. But do they?
The rule states that if a third quarterback is inserted before the fourth quarter, a team's first two quarterbacks cannot be used in the game at any position.
Another aspect of the rule is sometimes misunderstood. It is a coach's decision as to whether a third quarterback will be used.
The active quarterbacks do not have to be injured for a team to use its third quarterback.

This is from the rulebook. Look at the last sentence. But, it also states that if the third quarterback is used before the fourth quarter, a team's first two quarterbacks cannot be used in the game at any position.

I interupt the rule as meaning if you want to activate a player that was not listed as active for the game, then you can not reuse the other two guys. They may just list Henne as the 3rd string guy and only bring him into the game if they absolutly have too, or they may list all 3 QB's as active for each game.

we'll probably list him as a wr. Problem solved.

that doesn't really solve the problem. they could list him as an active QB and still be in the same situation.

Here is the problem in a nutshell:

Last year, we dressed 46 guys every sunday.

This year, if our 3rd string QB is not listed as an 'emergency QB', we are only going to be able to dress 45.

I understand your confusion but no one here really has an idea how White will be utilized. I'd just wait until TC and the Preseason to find out what role he will have.

OK, I think I got it

Thanks everyone for the replies. So basically, instead of calling him an emergency QB, he would just be an active quarterback on the roster. I was a little worried that they would make Henne the emergency QB, which would prevent him from coming in the game when we are blowing teams out (like we are sure to do this year :) )
