I hate we let him go.

I mean, McDaniel was 100% handicapped by Tua. However, he didn't seem to do well the things that were within his control either that other posters have mentioned already.. And just as much as he was handicapped by Tua he was 100% aided by having what was arguably the fastest skill position group at one point with an all-time great at the WR position There's a lot of plays that work with guys like that. Not to mention the whole cheat motion thing where his scheme relies on refs not enforcing a well-established rule.

Title says it all.

McDaniel’s biggest mistake was hitching himself to Tua at the hip, and that experiment failed miserably. My frustration peaked after the Buffalo loss to clinch the division. That game alone told me Tua wasn’t it. He never had the clutch gene at Bama the way I wanted him to, why I wanted us to draft him. I’ll admit it, I wanted Tua over Herbert in the draft. After that playoff game, I knew I was wrong, so wrong.

And yet, McDaniel still managed to make Tua look like an All-Pro/MVP for one season. He had to limit what he could even do offensively because of Tua’s limitations. No other coach in the NFL could’ve pulled that off. That alone says everything about McDaniel. Down the stretch this year, those players played their asses off for him. You don’t get that kind of buy-in by accident.

The reason I’m so upset is simple: there is literally no one I think is better than McDaniel that we could realistically hire, including Harbaugh. If Mcdaniel had a qb like Lamar... My god, I couldn't even imagine what we could have been.

He will succeed elsewhere. Give him a real NFL quarterback and watch him cook. I’m disgusted with the fans who called for his head — they’re going to regret it.

I know I'm in the minority here, so being flamed is welcomed and expected. We're all on the same team here, I'm just expressing my frustrations.
Stop complaining, when things was working good I bet you slept in your Dolphins garbage. Every coach should be attached to the hip of their qb because they have to be in sync with what they want to implement in order to win games, now you want to crap on everything like you are so knowledgeable? If Tua would have led the Dolphins to a Superbowl would you still be so critical?

The in- game management was abominable. I was fine with it year 1, grew weary year 2, then finished out his tenure with anger, contempt, and decreased sexual appetite. I don't think he has the personality for head coach. But as a dude helping me scheme, in a dark room somewhere while wearing shades and Capri pants, I'd welcome him.

If you're just going by playoff games, Herbert has arguably been worse. Blowing a 27-0 lead in one game and throwing 4 picks in the other. I suspect he's about to be 0-3 after tomorrow, but we'll see.

He did not implement sht. Four years in and receivers and TE could not run his routes. Four years in could not find a competitive quarterback. Kept Mike White and Skylar Thompson, and now Ewers and Wilson. And banged the table for his favorite quarterback forever and fkd us up for years. A complete failure. His coaching staff was garbage. He was a very damaging hire, more than just a waste of four year.

I agree with the OP whole heartedly. Whether you like McD or not, one thing is not up for debate IMO: This crop of HC candidates is not exciting at all. Firing McD during this cycle was a mistake and we’ll probably rue the day this franchise fired him.

A few McD highlights that are pretty damn hard to argue with:

- As a rookie HC tasked with saving Tua’s career, not only did he make Tua look like a functional QB, he actually lead Miami to a playoff birth- something that didn’t happen all that often prior to McD’s arrival.
- Leads Miami to a 2nd straight playoff birth for the first time in 2 decades. Then in year 3, Tua misses a huge chunk of the season due to concussions and McD somehow gets Miami just 1 game short of a 3rd straight playoff birth.
- Gets an All-Pro season out of Tua, a player we now know is an Extremely limited QB with a hefty injury history and lacks the mental fortitude necessary to be an NFL QB.
-Once it’s painfully obvious that Tua cannot be the guy, McD wins 5 of his last 8 games in Miami while remaking his offense on the fly into an old school, smash mouth, run first offense.

I really would have liked to see what he could do with a new GM and a full offseason to build the roster around his new run first approach but we’ll never get to see it because our owner fired him so we can hire a current OC or DC who probably won’t be any better.

For his haters in this fanbase, McD was never gonna be embraced because he was a “geek” and didn’t come across as macho enough.

McD’s gonna be just fine and go on to do great things in this league. The Dolphins probably won’t but I hope everyone gets their super macho HC that they’ve been crying for.

I liked McD......and initially thought he would simply get better every year. Unfortunately, that didn't happen

The league was quick to catch up to him and the two deep safety defense completely neutered our downfield play making the following season. Since then, it has been mediocrity, brilliant plays followed by really dumb plays and frankly, how many times have we seen the run game effectively move the team down the field, only to then go 3 passes in a row and punt. 4 years and we still can't pick up a 3rd and 1 consistently

Where I jumped off the bandwagon, was week 1 against the Colts this year. The Dolphins just weren't prepared to compete in their opening game. It was frustrating and disappointing to watch

I do think McD has a lot of potential and hopefully gets another opportunity down the road to try this again, but with a new GM coming in you have an opportunity to do this right and I think the move to make a change was necessary

He was not a good HC. He needs to be Mike Martz mad scientist in the lab reporting directly to a HC. That would unlock his abilities to the next level.

McDumbass is a bad coach when it counts. He doesn’t make halftime adjustments and loses critical games. His clock management sucks! He is a play designer at best.

Couldn’t agree more with the part about it being a lackluster group of head coaching candidates this cycle.

Yeah, I don’t see it.

1) no halftime adjustments
2) absolutely atrocious playcalling to often, in the run game too, not just when putting the ball in Tuas hands
3) absolutely atrocious clock management, and I don’t think he ever won one challenge.
4) Country Club culture producing a team full of pu$$ies.
I’m sure there’s more but this is good enough.

Exactly!!! That’s why we need to give Harbaugh whatever he wants. No more country club retirement for players. Hell, Tua mentally retired once he got that big contract
