OK.. all this talk about Jake Long "can play LT but would be a better RT" i think is dumb.. but my point is.......
WOULDNT ANY LT BE A BETTER RT?
i mean come on its an easier position.. i dont get this...

Here's another point. Wouldn't a truly cost-conscious team pursue left-handed QBs? They could go after the best RTs in the game, and pay less than for the best LTs in the game.

Thats actually a great point, I guess to counter that you just switch the side of a DE, but technically RT's get paid alot less that LT's so your protecting your qb's blindside for a lesser price. Never really thought about it...

Okay, I'll bite:

Original Poster: The LT usually lines up against the fastest DE. The knock on Jake is that he's not quick enough to handle speed rushers. Supposedly, he's a big, lumbering guy who cannot kick out fast enough to handle the JTs and Freeneys of the world. Some tackles ARE quicker than Jake and would be better LTs than him...at least, that's the argument.

So yes, any LT would be a better RT, but you need a "better" guy to play LT.

For what its worth, if Sparano thinks he can play LT, who am I to disagree?

Actually, that's a terrible point. The quicker DEs would just line up on the other side when they play a left-handed QB.

Not necessarily.

I think the LT's role is specifically ELITE pass blocking as the right handed quarterback can't really see out of his back. So he is inherently vulnerable when looking to pass.

The QB can see how the RT is fairing in pass blocking and thus the RT is not as important as the LT in terms of pass blocking.

Jake Long is a mauler at run blocking.

That's why, I think.

I don't really understand why people are saying that, though. Jake's pretty darn light on his feet for a man that size, can move backward very quickly to cut off the DE and AS WELL can maul as a run blocker.

He'll be one hell of a LT.

different techniques. but yes it is the easier of the 2 positions to play

no this isnt true i am acually a tackle and when droping different feet back to pass block one way is much easier. It doesnt make much difference for run blocking, but for pass blicking it does.

You mean that it's harder to move your left foot back first if you're used to moving your right back first? Or if it is more natural for you to move your right back first?

Jake's a lefty, if that means anything.

Some players are better suited for LT

because a RT needs to be a mauler in the run game. Chris Williams and Ryan Clady might have trouble in the running game.

I also happen to think that Jake Long is just fine on his feet. Harvey did his damage elsewhere...and people get caught up talking about one Vernon Gholston play against him. Then critics think he will have trouble against speed rushers in the NFL.

The Giants did more with power than speed rushers by the way.

I truly believe that Long will be an anchor at LT for us for a long time. I am darn happy about this.
