I'm Back Strong
Please be patient. This is rather long and I must speak the reasons why I did what I did.
Okay first let me start off by copying from my profile bio section just to get started....
Live in Maryland, fan since I was about 9. Yes I grew up in Baltimore and at the time all of my friends were hardcore Redskins fans, this was when they had Art Monk and Mark Rypien. And this was also the days of Tecmo Super Bowl which needless to say started my love for the Dolphins. I was always them because Marino had the best arm in the game and 2 receivers who could catch anything, the Marx Brothers. Now it wasn't easy being a phins fan in Baltimore. Especially after the Skins winning a Super Bowl then the Raven's coming to town when I was 14. I couldn't simply abandon my team even though Marino was ending his career (he still had 3 more years.) Then his knees started to go out and the Ravens won the Super Bowl. I still stuck with them
Now is where the drama begins. After all the losings years with the Phins my confidence in them never wavered. I was a phins fan. My brother an Eagles fan. He never quit on his team when they had the bad years. I was with them last year when they started Cleo Lemon. I knew we had no shot but still I stuck with them. My confidence did however start to shake when I was uphappy with their draft pick and that started making me question the teams/owners motives. Needless to say I didn't see the point in drafting Ted Ginn Jr. as a reciever/returner when we didn't have a QB to through him the ball. We no longer had Culpepper so I was ecstatic when Brady Quinn dropped to the 9th pick. I didn't exactly love Quinn but was glad. Culpepper had been traded earlier. I even would have been happy with Troy Smith or Kevin Kolb. Now i know the '07 was not a QB year for the draft but I still couldn't see why we took Ginn. Then we took John Beck from BYU as our second pick. I was crying at this point. Beck as a freshman at BYU was 22 which meant he was now 26. This made no sense to me. We then went on to sign Trent Green which upset me even further because he was mainly on the market because of a severe head injury. Sure he was doing great up till that point but he was 37 years old. Our QB roster for the '07 Season was Trent Green, Cleo Lemon, John Beck, and Gibran Hamdan. And this is just the QB stuff. I'm not delving into Ricky Williams at all. And then Wes Welker began to light up defenses in the NFL, while playing for the Pats, and Chris Chambers began to show life as a number one reciever for the Chargers, and of course our TE Randy McMichael, the best player on the team at the time I thought.
After the '07 season I began to have doubts. Then one night I was flipping through the channels and saw that the movie Major League was on. For those of you who haven't seen it, it's basically about an owner who wants to move her team from Cleveland and can't because she has a contract with the city. The only way she can is if her attendance falls under a certain number for the year. Well this story hit home for me. I began telling myself that the owner/GM were doing all of this intentionally. Now I didn't literally think the owner was trying to move the team but it didn't help when I heard that Huizenga was looking to sell. And then some things happened that really threw gas on the fire.
Now I was happy about the hiring of Parcells. I figured if anyone could turn this team around it was him. I thought he would make a far better GM (I know he isn't one but close enough) then a coach. I was happy about the release/firing of Cam Cameron. And yes I did/do like Tony Sparano. But again what I questioned was what they were doing with the on the field players. They released, not traded, Zack Thomas who was immediately picked up by the Cowboys. I feel that they could have gotten at least a 5th round pick for him. They also released Jay Feely, also picked up right away. They also released Trent Green who promptly went to the Rams. Then they traded Jason Taylor to the Skins, Taylor being our only real franchise player since Marino. I'm not saying he was a spring chicken or anything but he still led the league in sacks the year before.
The '08 draft we got Jake Long, again I was fine with this as there really was no great QB's but I did think McFadden would have worked or better yet try to trade the #1 overall pick. (From what I understand we did try that.) After all we had all of our HB's injured in '07 at one point and had to use our FB as our first string HB. We also got Chad Henne from Michigan. Now I thought that there were some better QB's then him but oh well. (I liked Colt Brennan. Shut up I don't want to hear it!) But then we extended Williams contract another year. I didn't get this. He had 6 rushes for 15 yards before he got injured by which I must add he only got injured after he fumbled the ball and was stepped on. Now of course we can say he's done great and hasn't screwed up or us. But did any of us know that that was going to happen. I was happy we got Pennington and DID NOT go for Favre. I thought that would have been a big mistake.
But now let me get to why I am asking for your forgiveness. Simply put I was sick of our owner or our front office. Whoever it was that was making these decisions. For two years I saw moves that simply put I did not understand. We've had 4 coaches, Cameron, Saban (don't get me started), Wannstedt, then Johnson since 1999. And I can't even count the QB's. Simply put I was frustrated. Gone were the days of Marino and Mark Clayton and Duper, and Don Shula.
I then spoke the words I regret and ask for your forgiveniss for, "I'm done with the Dolphins." I just couldn't take it anymore. Now if it helps my cause I never stopped keeping tabs on them. I simply stopped rooting for them. It actually hurt to watch them play in preseason and that's when the decision was made to stop supporting them. Now i never started pulling for another team. I did make my picks for who I thought was going to the Super Bowl. (NFC was between the Vikings and the Eagles and the AFC was the Titans and the Steelers.) I DID NOT buy any jerseys or say stuff like, "GOOOOOO WHOEVER!!!!"
So I now formally ask YOU, the fans, the people who matter, please let me comeback and support the Dolphins. Thank you.
(And I don't know if it will help but i'm 26 years old. I know I haven't got the longevity of some of you other fans out there but I have rooted for the Dolphins for almost 2/3'd of my life. Forgive my slip-up.... please)
