Holliday is still in his prime, just turned 32 a month ago and looks in good shape. His veteran leadership is valuable, but I think he isn't a typical 3-4 "RDE". He is more the 4-3 "RDE" or a heavy 3-4 "ROLB".

They even played Holliday at the OLB spot in TC. He is too slow to play the SOLB that Roth played....and I even think Roth is a little slower than you'd like.

I think that Starks and Merling will compete for the RDE spot in 2009 with Dotson and Wright becoming more primary backups and the loser of Merling/Starks competition being the top backup DE.

Releasing/trading Holliday will also open up a roster spot on the DL for an extra NT.

I believe that Parcells original intent was to carry 3 NTs, instead of only 2. When he signed Randy Starks, he envisioned a DE/NT type of player. But it seems that they like him permanently at DE.

Now Sparano's comments about "...you can never have too many DL...we want to get BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER...." has me thinking that he wants to add another NT to the rotation/competition.

We carried one too many DE's this season, let's be honest. When Ferguson went down to injury, we saw how thin we were at the 3-4 Defense's most important position...the NT spot.

Thus why I believe that MIA will trade/release Vonnie Holliday and replace him on the DL with a NT to compete/rotate with Ferguson and Soliai.

I will feel better and more safe with 3 legitimate NTs than carrying only 2. Especially because of how crucial it is for the 3-4 Defense and the age of Ferguson and the still maturing Soliai...

Well, that's how I'm envisioning our DL for the 2009 season. Thoughts?

While it remains to be seen if it really happens, I like the fact that you spent a thought or two on it and it shows. Well done.

I don't really have an opinion whether to get rid of Holliday or not. I think he was solid but not spectacular this season.

Thanks, man. I will admit he was solid. I just don't think he provides enough push nor is he as good against the run as Starks or Merling will be.

The fact that he played on the side that Porter rushed from has me a little skeptical about his pass rush ability from that End spot.

That plus, he would provide quite a bit of cap relief.

If Sparano feels that he'd rather keep Holliday's veteran leadership and that with a better Langford next season would help Holliday get more sacks then fine.

In that scenario, Dotson or Wright doesn't make the club and opens up the roster spot for the 3rd NT I expect us to bring in and carry throughout the season.

It is a distinct possibilty because I think Holiday is due a big cap number this next season. So, if he does stay he's going to cost us. At his age I can't really see a trade, but he might be released. I'd hate to see it, as he's a heck of a player still (we shoulda drafted him originally!), and he's a great addition to the locker room.

My guess is that he renegotiates and re-signs for a lower number. This will keep him in Miami where everyone is happy, although Vonnie will be a little less happy, heh.

I definitely think we'll be looking for 1 more NT, but that could be via Free Agency or the Draft either one. Soliai has potential, but he's not a lock to make the team by any means.

The bigger faster stronger comment could be interpreted many ways, including OL and even edge rushers like collegiate DE's converting to OLB's in the 34.

Don't be so quick to kick Holiday to the curb. If he goes, we'll definitely miss him, even if Merling does step up. Langford is an LDE, and I doubt he'll switch sides. If anything, Starks might slide over to RDE to compete with Merling. Either way, we'll still need a 4th DE to merit his time in the rotation. I'm banking on it being a renegotiated Vonnie Holiday.

Dolphins DE Vonnie Holliday is reportedly in danger of being a cap casualty this offseason.

Holliday holds a $5.75M cap number. He contributed only 3.5 sacks in 2008, but the Dolphins' defense doesn't ask ends to penetrate as often as most schemes. We're betting Holliday returns, but he may need to take a pay cut.

Vonnie definitely isn't the ideal 3-4 DE . . . which was shown by this regime having him work as an OLB many times in training camp ala Matt Roth. I said for a whle now that Vonnie won't be here next season. I really like him, but he just doesn't fit . . . and if we can get something for him that would be great but we probably cut him and save some cap room. The rotation of Merling, Langford, STarks, Dotson and Wright definitely has more of a 3-4 feel to it . . . and we could add to that as well. Combine those 5 with Ferguson and Soliai and a NT draft pick/FA . . . and we will be set on the front line.

I agree 100%. Holiday's veteran leadership will be missed, I've mentioned this in some of my previous posts but I believe we will bring in another DT too. I would like to draft one early, such as; Alabama's Terrence Cody (if he declares), Boston College's BJ Raji or Ron Brace.

Vonnie actually turned 33 last month. He was born in 1975. That being said, yes we need to get younger at his spot and especially at nose tackle where Ferguson turns 35 during the 2009 season.

Vonnie is very intelligent, all you have to do is watch his interviews to see that. I think he has great veteran leadership and is a very solid player. I see him taking a pay cut to stay here. Unless another team will match that salary (which I don't see happening). From everything I saw, he was having alot of fun here this year, and knows we have a good shot of the playoffs again next year.

I would love to keep him, but u are right with that pay cut . . . he is going to have to take one. Also he probably wont be the starter either, but that is speculation on my part.

He just fits the 4-3 so well, as he could be the small DT or the bigger DE . . . the 3-4 is like blah for him . . . to slow and big to be a OLB, to small for NT . . . and not the best build for a DE.

But after watching Chad Pennington play, I have learned it takes more than physical talents and numbers . . . sometimes intangibles and leadership is bigger than both . . . and Vonnie's leadership is an asset to a young team.

i think Holiday did well this season, better then the past couple of seasons he played here, unless there is a need to cut/trade him i say we keep him. we cant count on rookies Merling/Langford and other young DL such as Starks/R.Wright/Soliai to carry our Dline. Unless we can sign so quality VETS i say keep Holiday and ask him to take a pay cut. this isnt Madden where you can start all rookies and they play as well as vets if there rating is good enough. lmao this is real life. you need vets to mentor and help the rookies, even if he doesnt play i still think we need as much vet experience as we can get. maybe in 1-2 yrs we can leave it with only merling/langford but now they are still raw and need more time.
