Is that we are one Jason Ferguson injury away from Armageddon on defense. Now that it appears that Soliai has flamed out as a backup NT, all we have is a Lionel Dotson and UDFA Louis Ellis backing up Fergie.

Unless Dotson or Ellis are two unexpected "acorns," our 3-4 is going to crumple like an aluminum can against the run unless we find some quality depth.

I actually liked our 2009 draft by and large, but I really wish we had moved up at some point to snag a quality young NT.

I wonder if there is any chance the regime would consider giving Shawn Murphy a look at NT if he continues to disappoint on offense. He started off on defense at Utah State and has decent size. Just a thought.

Agreed, the resistence to DT investment is baffling considering the worrying weight and motivation issues surrounding Soliai. They seem to have faith though. Can McDaniel do a job there?

I think they see McDaniel as a very poor man's (perhaps homeless man's (?)) Jay Ratliff. Let's hope for the best.

This is probably my next concern over interior O line. Fortunately, its only one guy, so, if we can find or develop one more NT, we'll be ok. But point taken....The lack of adressing the interior line is sort of baffeling.

D.Robinson in the late rounds sounds alot better now doesn't it! Hopefully Thomas is healthy for the season or someone stands up and grabs the job and doesn't let go.

Shawn Murphy wont command a double team at NT. One gap wonders is not what we need. NT is a serious concern though, just see our first Baltimore game in 2008 as an example.

Soliai is probably not in as bad as shape as the media is playing it. Sporano and company have a backup plan even if Soliai is in that bad of shape too. Perhaps it is Cohen who is the the 3rd NT from last year who I hear is in better shape this year or they might snag one of the Pats NT. The Pats have 4 Nt. 3 rookies and their veterans. From what I understand all 3 NT that they picked are the ones that the phins really considered NT's worth drafting. They will not keep all 4.
Just some options to think about and maybe they release Wilfork and we pick him up.

Can you say Louis Ellis? He was pursued by several teams, even the Pats who have 4 NT's on their roster. If he makes the team i think we should call him "country". Ellis or Cohen i am betting gets the back up spot if Soliai doesn't get off the twinkies.

Agreed - Joe Cohen and Louis Ellis are the hopeful NT backups. Soliai is getting moved to DE. Lionel Dotson and Travis McDaniel are also 3-4 DEs. We are indeed very questionable on the DL.

As for OL, I think Donald Thomas and Justin Smiley are both way too brittle to be counted on. I'd like to see us sign OT Levi Jones and move Vernon Carey inside to OG. Levi Jones would command a hefty contract though - if he is healthy.

Baffling? Ireland made it perfectly clear that NT and Pass rush were our primary concerns heading into the draft, but since none (that we liked) were available at our slots, we went for value. If it was a primary need in the draft and we didnt pick one in the draft, I'm sure it's still a primary need. I'm sure they're exploring all options to fill that position.

Our FO looked ahead on this one. There are better prospects in next year's draft at NT. Of course, they could all have bad seasons this year at their schools, but that's a risk the FO took.

i have to agree.but even more is the whole up the middle defense.the inside lb's scare me the most.thats why are nt position is even more critical.the lb's dont seem to attack the line ,or make alot of tackles at the line of scrimmage.i hope ellis comes on.but if something bad happens at nt.it makes you wonder if we wont get gutted up the middle on the ground.

We drafted for need on every pick, and only got value on maybe 2 picks. And it was obvious CB was the primary concern, followed by WR.

Nope are big concern is still RG first, as we need a starter still. At NT we still have Jason Ferguson as a starter with no decent back up.
