Ive been thinking about the quaterback position alot lately. I know i read somewhere in a thread here, what did people think Chad Henne would be like? Would he be a game manager or a true "put points on the board" scoring qb.

So i started watching videos of Dan and started to analyze what characteristics i want either Henne or Pat White to attain and i came up with this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTPFdn9uzj8

Watch that video first.

First thing I notice in the video is Dans footwork. Although he was a slower than molasses, you can see the guy had incredible feel for the pocket and he knew where defenders were coming from. He was excellent at side stepping and feeling the pocket around him.

Second thing I notice is his Lightning fast release. There is absoloutely no wasted motion and he knew where he was going to throw the ball fairly early in the snap. It would be 3, 5, 7 step drops and boom. Sometimes he did adjust and hold the ball that split second extra knowing that his receiver would get open if he could buy him that extra time.

Third is something you cant teach. Dan was deadly accurate with the football. Check the videos and where the balls for the most part always were fairly easy to catch. No wonder the Mark Bros were so good. Get open and Dan would do the rest. He would always give his receivers a chance to make the play.

My advice to Henne and White.....

Take notes and Study this Man!!!!!
and hopefully one or both of you guys can take us to the promise land :hi5:

As much as a person can try to be as good as Dan, I don't think we'll ever see a player with the passing skills of Dan the Man. He is special for a reason and just had god given talent when it came to throwing the football. He played in an era when the rules favored the defenses, unlike today's pansy rules. Dan was special, but a lot can be learned from mimicking his great abilities.

yes they can both learn alot from dan but neither one of them has the arm strength and accuracy combo that he had let alone the pocket pressence but if they can learn it it would be good

While I absolutely loved Dan. As you can tell from my nick. Yeah he probably could give some good pointers to Henne as Henne is more of a pocket passer. While White is more of a runner . Yeah Dan might be able to help him maybe in throwing motion. But White is more of a guy that runs more. And might not be comfortable as a pocket guy. Unless he were to suffer a injury where he has to learn being a pocket QB. In which case Henne would have more of an edge at being the guy.

And let's not forget we still have a guy playing Qb that is excellent at playing the position. Yeah he may not have the strongest arm. But he definitely has the smarts. So I am just fine with Pennington mentoring younger guys. And if Dan happens to be around yeah that would be ok too.

They can both study Dan for years but how does one measure up
to one of the greatest QBs ever,a player who comes along once in
a lifetime? As much as we would like them to play like Dan,it's not going to happen and it would be a disservice to Chad and Pat to expect that.

Lets be happy with the progression of two young QBs.

If it was as simple as learning from Dan, then Scott Mitchell and Damon Huard would be in the hall of fame.

Sometimes you got it, sometimes you don't.

I wouldn't doubt that if Mr. Dan Marino saw something he could advise Henne on, he'd tell him or someone in the organization. However, it's reasonable to assume anything Dan could see Pennington could also.
Great artists/practitioners aren't necessarily great teachers, btw.

There are some things about Marino I want our young QBs to assimilate:
  • FIRE. Marino had a competitive fire that burned STRONG. He HATED to lose. He would chew out underperforming teammates.
  • CLASS. Marino was a Floridian, part of his community. He is still active locally. He carried himself with the air of a champion. Dave Barry wrote an article about Marino tossing the ball with a crippled kid that brought tears to my eyes. Dan the Man has a big heart for others.
  • QUICK RELEASE. Watching the video brought it back. BANG. Could anyone let go of the ball quicker?
  • ACCURACY. He could anticipate and lead the receiver so that they could make YACs.
  • FOOTWORK. He did the "Marino shuffle" (move to the left, move to the right) always keeping his legs ready to power that throw. Secret of his release and accuracy IMHO.
  • POWER. The ball got there in a hurry. New receivers were a blast to watch in Training Camp trying to get used to catching cannon shot. Good long ball. We never felt the down and distance was so far Marino had NO chance to make it.

I do feel the flip side of Marino that hurt him (and the Dolphins) his whole career was that he was a streak passer. He wanted the ball in his hands so that he could get into a groove flinging the rock. That made it hard to work hand-in-glove with a running game. I think one of Peyton Manning's strengths is his ability to mesh with the run, to audible to the run (not a favorite Marino thing to do). Dolphin blockers were primarily pass rush blockers. Some people say that Marino never had a good run game to work with. Maybe he was part of that reason (there were some sucky tailbacks we had during his years too). I think Penny is better than Dan in this area.

Dan was not so good as a coach and mentor. Penny has a coach's heart and mindset and wants to coach after his NFL player days are done. Never seemed to be a desire for Dan (other than maybe Damon Huard). Too much God-given talent. Sometimes it is hard for gifted athletes to explain to others how to do what they do naturally. Coaches are usually the players with mediocre talent who make it using their heads and learn to excel at fundamentals and mastering the mental aspects of the game.

Danny could read if a WR was going to be open 3-5 yards into the WR's route.
"If hes even, he must be leavin'."

Also dug watching the video to see some of my old time fav receivers like O.G., Nat Moore, the Marks Brothers, Fryar making plays for the Fins...one play where Nat Moore hustled downfield to make a block for a TD...sweet...

See the difference is that I think White is a POCKET PASSER that can run. Hes not like vince young whos a runner who can throw. If i had to say what kind of QB he could be is more of a STEVE YOUNG. Now im not saying hes gonna be STEVE but he has that style. Pat only ran when he saw fit. Otherwise he wouldnt be able to accumulate all those Passing yards he did during his career at WV.

Any QB would become better if they had marino as a mentor.

Im not mad henne and white are learning from pennington though. I think he is going to be a wonderfull QBs coach someday.

i like henne learning from penny, he'll have pennington's smarts and be able to make all the throws, i think white would be best served to learn from someone like steve young, a lefty who could scoot...... although he didn't seem able to help vick.....

I think that I would compare Pat White to Fran Tarkenton. He uses his ability to run to open up the pass. He'll take it in himself if he has to, but he's usually looking for someone to throw the ball to.
