There are some coaching candidates being mentioned, like Gailey and Schottenheimer, who are solid regular season coaches. If hired, either one of them will make the Dolphins decent and get them to the playoffs rather quickly. However, neither one will ever get the Dolphins over the hump and into the Superbowl. They both can be outcoached rather easily. And guess what? Bill Belichick is sitting up there in New England and he will outsmart those two coaches 9 out of 10 times. This would mean that the Dolphins would have to play the perfect game against the Pats--every single time.

I see so many posters out there who are saying things like "I would love to have the Chargers season and go 14-2 and lose in the first round of the playoffs." Well, maybe that is better than we had this year, but we don't need to settle for that. If you asked Charger fans if they are happy with thier season, they would probably say "no way". They had the most talented team in football, and they lost because they were outcoached. We need to ask ourselves if Coach X can get the Miami Dolphins a Superbowl victory. If the answer is no, then Coach X needs to be eliminated as a candidate. If we settle for mediocrity, the Dolphins will never be better than mediocre.

I feel that this point is inaccurate, but that's just my opinion. I, for one, would love to see Marty here with a talented OC...and I also suspect strongly that the Pats don't win that game 9 times out of 10. Cameron made some poor play calls...much of which can be blamed on inexperience.

I also don't think we can accurately say that Schottenheimer CAN'T win the big one...the same was once said about some guy named Elway.

i agree with you but the problem is that only one person wins the superbowl every year. does that mean that all the other coaches are no good? Look ill take my chances with a 14-2 record and a first round bye everytime.will i be mad if we lose in th second round? yeah but 14-2 is still the best in the league and your not going to play the pats every year in the playoffs

boy i sure miss those ten win seasons. i know how you guys feel it is very demoralizing.:boohoo:

Nice post. I have been waiting 33+ years to see my Phins win another SB. I never imagined we would go all these years and not win another one. We have had the talent to win it all, especially early in the Marino years, but we just never got it done. I think talent is about 75% of what wins games, coaching is about 15%, and luck is probably the other 10%. I hope we at least bring in someone who can build us a contending team.

Great post, ThePhinRedLine. I feel the same way. That's why I'm not too excited about Chan Gailey. IMO, Gailey would get us to the playoffs but that is about it.

Interesting percentages. I'm not sure if it's 75/15/10 or 60/20/20 or 25/25/50. But I think you hit the nail on the head as far as the three main ingredients necessary to win...

Talent
Coaching
Luck

Yep, you've got to be right. Marty is an avg / second choice coach because he hasn't won the superbowl. Yep, Peyton Manning and Dan Marino are second-rate QB's because they haven't won the superbowl either. So any team that has or had them should of dumped them immediately because it would make them so much better to get rid of them and hire someone like Kitna or Pennington because they are a much safer pick because they don't have that "label" attached to them, right ??? Sorry, the logic around some of these arguments just baffles me!

I hear what you're saying. But as I watched that SD/NE playoff game, all football logic went right out the window. I'm sitting there going, "WTF! Well, I guess it's true: Marty Schottenheimer can't win playoff games. And Belichick & Brady don't lose playoff games."

It's mind-boggling.

Reminded me of every team that played Pittsburgh last year. Pitt had nothing to lose and played like it and took the chances they needed to win each game. Every team they played seemed to play a game where it looked like they were trying to do just enough not to lose the game. Same thing seems to be happening with NE this year. If Indy plays a conservative game against NE, they have NO prayer.

SD was sooooo ripe to get picked off last week it wasn't funny. Bye week, conservative play calling (hoping home field would make up for it). Their young inexperienced QB and horrible WR's just killed them. Just handing off the ball to LT wasn't going to do it with NE stacking the line in the second half. I understand the concern about getting to the ultimate goal, but I personally believe someone like Marty gives us a better chance to get there than someone like Shula or Gailey. I personally like Rivera from Chicago, but I don't think the FO will wait that long to sign someone, so we'll go with someone in the next week or less. Regardless who we pick, it's going to be a gamble, as there's no guarantee with any of these guys. So let's pick up the dice and let em roll !!!

yea, you, me, jim in idaho, wayne, JT, ZT, couple other guys too. It's not gonna happen till we get a coach and make the playoffs.

We need to ask ourselves if Coach X can get the Miami Dolphins a Superbowl victory. If the answer is no, then Coach X needs to be eliminated as a candidate.

How can anybody know if the answer to that question, for ANY of the candidates, is yes?

coaches are overrated...you give a medicore coach the talent than he can be successful

Barry Switzer is the prime example of this. The Cowboys won the 1996 Super Bowl in spite of him.

I don't buy that one bit.

Discounting EITHER coaching or talent is a big mistake.

Tell the Chargers that coaching is overrated and talent can overcome avg. coaching. They are a more talented team and got out coached badly. That's why they'll be watching the playoffs this weekend.
