If anyone is still looking for more thoughts on the draft (LOL) here are mine...
-Alex Smith ran a "gimmick" offense at Utah and spent alot of time in the shotgun. Though his smarts and physical abilities are unquestioned, I think the level of competition he played against as well as his ability to perform in a pro style offense are. He is too big of a risk to draft at #2 and give alot of garunteed money to with a longterm deal. #2 QB busts can set a franchise back big time.
- I think ultimately Miami will trade down on draft day or as soon as the 49ers lock up their pick. Everyone has been so anxious to see a trade this week, but without the 49ers committment to a selection, no other team can risk moving up in fear that the player they want may get taken first overall (Braylon Edwards).
-Saban has made it known he wants more draft picks, and would like to obtain players that have the most long term value to the franchise. With that said, everyone has mentioned offense offense offense as the direction Miami will go in the 1st rd. Actually, it is our offense that has the most youth and players with the most long term value to the franchise. There are many more holes on a defense that is not aging but aged. Without a trade down, I think you are forced to take BPA with a #2 pick and that would be Edwards, but if we are able to consumate a trade with either the Bucs, Vikes or Skins you will see us draft CB Antrel Rolle at #5. If we pick #7 and Rolle goes at #6 to the Titans, I think there is a strong possibility of LB/DE Merriman, or Auburn CB Carlos Rodgers. If we have the Skins #9 pick, DT Travis Johnson is a possibility. As for Ronnie Brown, or any of the "big 3" backs, I think teams like Denver have proven with good blocking it really doesn't matter who you have toting the rock. We have a pretty good offensive line coach and I believe it would be smart to see if they will be worth a damn before throwing a franchise rookie running back into the fire. The same would apply to a QB as well.
- Patrick Surtain will be a Kansas City Chief. Carl Peterson is under so much pressure from the media and fan base that if he does not bring Surtain to KC he will never live it down. His second round draft history has been less than stellar, and with Buchannon going to Houston for a 2nd and 3rd, there is no way he cannot make the deal with Miami for only a 2nd. He just has visions of being guru and thinks he can scare Miami into dumping Surtain for a 4th rounder. Saban is too smart for Peterson and the Chiefs will cough up that 2nd round pick, even if it is during the 1st round on draft day.
Finally, forgetting about everything I have said, I would love to see MIKE WILLIAMS in aqua and orange next season. Don't be fooled by the stopwatch in his 40 time. The guy can flat out play football.
