I have always thought that Carey was more of a tackle. He does not seem to be the road grader type that can plow holes in the running game. I have perceived him to be more of a passive, finesse tackle who can move his feet and protect the QB.

But, the Palm Beach Post seems to suggest he is a better fit at RG. Thoughts?

I do like Hadnot at C. He, to me, is a good run blocker and putting him at center minimizes the problems he had with penalties, particularly false starts.

Hopefully we can get Ashworth. If so, Shelton, James, Hadnot, Carey, Ashworth as a group should be competent. Alabi and Wade Smith as key backups. Maybe we draft an interior lineman or Burger takes the 8th spot. No pro bowlers but with Houck's tutelage, hopefully would be a decent group. Realistically, though, it is not going to be one of the top groups in the league, but maybe good enough.

I am hoping that Shelton's signing means that Houck, Saban, and Mueller see Alabi as the eventual answer there, with Shelton a stopgap.

I have posted on here for a couple years about this and some agree and some do not. I have watched Vernon Carey play since he was in HS and every game in college and now every game he has played with the Dolphins. He can play both spots but in my opinion he is a natural guard and a right guard at that...

if we get ashworth and carey moves to RG all i could say is solid. thats it

Shelton and Ashworth turn our line from over acheiving last year to pretty damn close to amayzing

Has anyone noted that the roster on the official site lists Hadnot at C?

Carey is still listed at T (and not G/T, either).

When we drafted Carey, he was the top rated guard in the draft. I always questioned why we made him a tackle. He should do better on the inside.

Making Carey a guard pretty much automatically makes him a bust by classic draft standards. Nobody takes guards at 19, much less trades up to take them at 19.

Not really. If we have a need at guard and he becomes a good one, just because he was taken too high by classic standards doesn't mean he's a bust. It means Spielstedt screwed up. Censure them, not the player. Not his fault he was picked high.

He started the last 2 games at center...

I was hoping we could keep Carey at RT since he did a fine job, move Shelton to RG, put Ashworth on the left side. That way, Carey continues to improve at that spot, Shelton's lack of mobility and inability to handle speed rushers is negated at the Guard spot, Ashworth can play LT which he has before (plus he played solidly protecting Brady at that spot).

If you're going to argue that, no player can ever be called a bust because no player can ever help where he is picked.

Picking a tackle at 19 who has to become a guard means bust. I don't want to hurt VC's feelings, and I care more about him playing well than where he plays. Even still, there are standards. People here need to understand and accept them.

Yeah, I'm well aware of that. My point is that they don't list him as guard or as center/guard. They have chosen to list him as center. That should give us some insight into their thinking.

If I recall, Carey started out @ LT last training camp and impressed Jason T. I guess we will just have to trust Houck & Nick.

I heard that Hadnot was a great communicator which is what is needed at Center. What about Wade Smith? Seth IMO would be a better backup guard for some other team.

I'm all for the acquisition of Ashworth. Actually, I'm for whatever Nick thinks will help this team raise the Lombardi Trophy if not in 2007 then in 2008.

Don't worry he'll be playing RT again because Ashworth is most likely going to TB just like every other FA we bring in- they go to the next visit and sign there.

I agree it's not going to be one of the top offensive lines. I think it will be a little better as of now.
If we get Ashworth well I can't say he's gonna improve our team, maybe at depth. Ashworth wasn't even a starter on the patriots, he only played LT when Nick Kaczur was injured. And he got beat out at RT by Brandon Gorin. He ended up just being a situational player at the end of the year.
Shelton is just a step above McIntosh. Shelton's still gonna need some help in pass protection.

I don't think hes mean enough or physical enough to play guard.
