I know we haven't exactly done well this preseason, but I like the way this team is shaping up. Our first team defense hasnt allowed a td in the last few games. We have a great running back combo that should be able to run over defenses. And our offensive line seems to be coming together (knock on wood).

I know most people already know it, but the qb position is really holding us back a ton. Dont get me wrong; I was hoping feeley or frerotte would step up and look good. IMO neither has. I think our lack of a qb is the difference between 5 or 6 wins and the playoffs. I wanted to make this post to see if everyone else feels that if we had a good qb that we would be one of the better teams in football. Im not saying its a guaranteed super bowl by any means, but we would be pretty darn good. It's a shame that one position is such a detriment to this team. Thoughts?

i think if the oline starts playing better consistantly the running game will progress and the QB situation wont be so dismal, for whoever is starting...

i think thats whats holding us back, a team can win with a ****ty passing game, but they have to have a great running game, which usually starts with the oline, so if that comes together i think things will work out good...

What would you do if you had a QB? Take him shopping with you? I'd rather the Dolphins had one, or hell, just play Feeley.

As for the rest of your post, think Baltimore and Tampa, hell even the Pats and we'll be fine.

don't think we need a superstar quarterback, just one that makes smart decisions. i think either one is surrounded by talent, and if they use that to their advantage i think we will do just fine this year.

Yes, if we had a good QB we'd be one of the better teams this year.

I don't know where we would have gotten a good QB for this season, do you?

I think we have what we have. Hopefully one of them will step up. I think there's only one that has any "step up" left in him but, that's another thread.

I think that we may have a good QB at some point this season, hopefully we won't dig ourselves too deep of a hole before that time.

Thankfully we have a defense that can keep us in games, even with a bad QB.

All it's going to take is some decent QB play, and we could be competitive in every game, i think we can at least get that out of what we have now.

No not at all. I dont blame saban or the team for not having a good qb. I like how he built everything else up. I like how we are improving our line. I also think we will get one real soon. I just wanted to point out that I really think it's one position that's holding us back quite a bit. But you are right, it really wasnt possible to address that need this season.

No, I got your point and it saddens me too but, I didn't expect gus to be the answer and I didn't expect Feeley to be ready by now so, I was expecting the QB position to be a weakness at this point of the season. With all the good things that Saban is doing with the rest of the team, I think he'll find a way to get good play out of the QB position even if he has to go out there and do it himself.

I still think before the end of this season we will have a good QB, and his name won't be Saban. ;)

I think we could get to the playoffs with what we have at QB if we can connect long. Obviously, we are still working on that. I feel differently about our QB situation. I think the competition is a real one and is now just heating up. Gus needs to show that he can take it further by hitting the deep stuff. AJ knows his career on the line so I think the opportunity will present itself to him at the right time. The benefit that FEeley should have over last year is that he has a LT to protect him better and Seth Mckinney is actually hitting people. That alone will make it better. Feeley will get his opportunity and I believe he does not want to sit and watch Gus produce, so If Gus can hit the long ones, and looks respectable, then that builds the competitive juices to AJ and he knows it is crunch time. It will be much different than this preseason BS.

That is still a tall order to alot of people I know but if you look at other teams in preseason, the only ones who look sharp to me are the NE Patriots and maybe Atlanta and a few other playoff teams. If you compare our game with Tampa, I thought our first string dominated by far. If we can do that for four quarters, there is no doubt in my mind we will be tough to beat. Not neccesarily win, but tough to beat. No pushovers here.

i agree... the NFL is full of QBs who play smart and take thier teams to the playoffs. I think saban was smart to concentrate on th line offensively and defensively.

Better line play will make our QBs play much better.

This is a longshot, but hopefully, if Saban is as good a coach as many think he is, that might make the difference.

Remember what "Bum" Phillips used to say about Shula?

"He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n."

It's interesting the different comments we see on these threads regarding QBs. Yes, Feeley was a disappointment last year and he cost us a second round draft choice. Yes, Gus is a disappoinment this year but he didn't cost us much. Hudson Houck has indicated our offensive line will be a work in progress and he hopes to see improvement as the year progresses. Just maybe they see the QBs we have as caretakers of the position untill if, and when the Dolphins are able to come up with the QB who will be that "Franchise Quarterback" to take the position to the next level. I am just glad they didn't overpay for the good, but not great QBs who were available this year

Very good post with some nice points. QB's can be fragile, phisicaly and mentally. It wouldnt be smart to bring in a young qb with a poor offensive line. He would get hit a lot and his confidence would drop. Once you have all the other parts in place, bring in the qb. Kinda like the Steelers with Rothlisberger.

I tend to agree with you that having the QB question resolved will be the best thing for the team, but I also have another observation...IMO...it seemed to me that under JJ and Wanny the team's psychy was very fragile and brittle...a few examples...when Ears went down for 3 or 4 games a couple of years ago...the team just couldn't recover...when ZT was out for a few games the D caved in...When we would fall behind late in the game (usually after leading much of it), the team just seemed to tank it...
I see that phase improving...Saban is teaching/preaching a mental toughness and "take care of your job no matter what" attitude that will lead to mental toughness and fewer collapses.

As to the current QB situation...I don't know where Saban is coming from other than, like most fans, he just isn't to enamored with either guy. It would seem to me that you'd want that resolved. Last year, was different...Ears was clearly the chosen one prior to minicamps. AJ never had a shot, however the question with Wanny was why he just didn't name Jay and move on...by the time he made a decision, he had deflated any confidence the team or Ears had in himself to take the job by the horns.

It'll be interesting to see how "tough" AJ and Gus are when he names a starter. The idea of a two-headed monster does not appeal to me and to my knowledge has never worked in the NFL...

I am sure that Saban had fully expected one of these guys to take the job by now. I was sure that AJ would have wrested the job and his teammates by now, but was wrong. Starting Gus, IMO, is kissing the season goodbye...Anyone who has seen him play prior to here, knows that he will tank it sooner or later during the season as a starter. That is his M.O. To sum this dissertation up...we are in for a long season...we don't seem to have a QB who is capable of taking us to the PO's, much less an above .500 season.
