but didn't Cam draft Eli Manning over Phillip Rivers? And Eli refused to go so they traded picks with the Giants and that's how they landed Rivers. I am correct right?

If I am...

Then why does Cam keep acting like and making statements as if he had Rivers in mind the whole time? His latest Q&A on Dolphins.com he acts as if he drafted Rivers over everybody else, when in fact Rivers was handed to him as a second best.

because that move bought them picks. They essentially extorted the giants.

Yes, the Chargers got there man and an extra pick...brilliant!

yea they drafted him to trade him not because they wanted eli but because they knew the giants would trade for him.

Cam did not draft anybody it was Aj Smith and Schott.

umm, Cam was the offensive coordinator in SD, he had zero to little imput on draft picks.

Thats what I was about to say, Why do people keep saying Cam drafted this player or that player in San Diego? He was the offensive coordinator in San Diego not the General Manager or the Head Coach. He may have had input but he sure didn't make the final decision. As dlockz says that would have been AJ Smith, Schotenheimer and Schott pulling the trigger on that one.

They DID want Rivers...

But they knew how bad the Giants wanted Eli. And, Eli was the consensus #1 QB... just not in the Charger's eyes...

Wow...im pretty sure there isnt an Offensive Coordinater in the league who even has a say in personnel decisions.

When the whole situation went down they were expecting to deal Eli. I'm pretty sure they told the Giants to draft Rivers at #4 because the deal was imminent at that point.

Agreed. But if you are drafting a QB in the top 10 and you have someone on your staff who is a respected QB mentor, don't you think that person's opinion would be highly meaningful.

If you read between the lines of Cam's statements and everything we know about the situation, you could interpret it that Manning was the "conventional wisdom" top QB in that draft, but Cam saw something he liked better in Rivers and conveyed that opinion to Marty and AJ Smith.
