We can all agree that Manning is the master of deception. What he does on the football field with his audibles and wild arm flapping is masterful. He gets inside of the heads of his opponents better than any QB out there.
I once watched him snap the ball on third and goal from the one and chuck it at a receiver who fell down, because he noticed the DB push him. Flag called, new set of downs. Brilliant.
Now If I'm Peyton Manning, I know where I want to go. I've known since the Polians were canned. Everyone else in the world is wondering where Peyton Manning is going to play when Irsay doesn't fork over 28 million, and you're telling me he's the only one oblivious? Lost in thoughts of superbowls past? No way. He's not dumb and a tiny thing like THE REST OF HIS CAREER would be on his mind constantly.
So I submit the whole "I haven't thought of where" routine is a scam. The fact that he's even meeting with the Dolphins after he wasn't going to proves he was planning us from the beginning. Here's how:
I think Miami was always number 1 because he lives there. His wife loves the place, and any devoted husband seriously takes his wife's opinion into account. It's the AFC, so no taking out little bro on his way to the SB, sick defense, solid run game, pro bowl mvp receiver, fantastic weather, and an owner who says he WANTS YOU (as opposed to Irsay who said he'd rather have Luck than skill)
Now he has a shot at a HUGE contract, he's Peyton friggin Manning. Arguably the best of our time. He deserves one, injuries aside. So he's got to create a bidding war.
By telling everyone he wasn't thinking about destinations, he forced the media into a tough position. Who wants to be the guy that calls Peyton Manning a liar? Not our shining pillar of excellence! So they've been taking everything he's said at face value. So by establishing the "im just the innocent dolt who thought he'd be a colt forever" and a mutually agreed upon PR saving press conference with Irsay (Hey, if we BOTH cry and sacrifice a tiny bit of machismo, we can both get outta this unscathed) Manning is in total control.
It's in his best interest to create panic in the war room of the team he wants to play for. That drives up his price. So he needed to make Miami panic and by meeting with Denver and Arizona (two plausibly legitimate contenders) and declaring to the media he was done, he was basically saying "your move, Miami"
If he actually was done with his search, he'd be done with his search. If he declined meeting with Miami last week, what would suddenly make him change his mind. He knew everything that was on the table, they couldn't offer him anything more than what he was expecting anyway.
Miami is in lockdown mode because they're trying to hide something, we just don't know what it is. Maybe they knew this would be the tactic, having put out feelers for months now. Maybe they didn't want a single shred of any of this to leak because Manning would look manipulative (like when he fakes defensive backs out of their jocks) and when you have a superstar of THAT quality, you do whatever he wants.
I believe he'll be named a Dolphin any day now. Because the most important reason is aesthetic. It's why he and Irsay cried. It's why he visited Arizona and Denver.
It's also why Stephen Ross isn't at the meeting.
Because when he signs, it can't be interpreted as "Miami rolled out the red carpet and woo'd him" or "Miami was willing to pay more" Admit it, that's all Stephen Ross' presence at a meeting would mean. He brought the wallet.
So by meeting to discuss "X's and O's" he's telling us his decision is coming down to the team who can sell him with Football and not glitz. He can't be accused of a John Elway man crush. He can't have Larry Fitzgerald as a crutch. It has to all be about football for Manning, or at least appear that way to everyone else.
Some might say this is conspiracy theory nonsense. But tell me something. If you based your career and the potential for millions of millions of dollars in advertising after the NFL on your image, wouldn't you be a little concerned for it? You just left the 1 team everyone thought you'd play with for the rest of your life.
This next stage in his life determines how his career ends, how his legacy is remembered. Don't tell me he hasn't drawn up an elaborate play that ends with a TD in Miami.
Of course, with that said, he always reserves the right to call an audible. If he goes to Denver, I'll poop with rage.
