ESPN Jaguars reporter Mike DiRocco expects Jacksonville to release Julius Thomas this offseason.

Signed to a monster five-year, $46 million deal ahead of the 2015 season, Thomas has answered with 46-455-5 and 30-281-4 receiving lines in 2015 and 2016, respectively, while missing 11 games to injuries. He scored 24 touchdowns across his final two seasons in Denver, but the Jaguars failed to use him like the Broncos did as a field-stretcher down the seams. Thomas isn't going to make defenders miss on short passes; he's a run-straight athlete in the mold of Jared Cook who could benefit playing in an offense that better plays to his strengths. Releasing Thomas would save the Jaguars $4.7 million against the cap. Jan 17 - 9:01 PM -rotoworld

At 28, how much would he cost and do you think there might be some interest as Gase and Thomas were in Denver together, Thomas best 2 years were while Gase was the OC. Would Thomas signing be better then resigning Stills? Discuss...

I think first and foremost we need a guy who can stay healthy, which is not him.

Thomas is well-known for half-assed efforts and taking plays off.

I don't see Gase putting up with that kind of garbage knowing it first hand.

I see Jordan Cameron as a certain cut, so a player like Julius Thomas is a natural consideration. From Denver, Gase knows his strengths and weaknesses. The big questions are his physical health and why he failed in Jax. If Gase really likes him, we could be a player. However, my inclination would be to lock up Dion Sims (who made further improvement) and draft a seam threat TE who can block.

Had no idea he half assed effort and took plays off. I just remember him being a monster in Denver the last 2 years he played there. If that's correct then I would agree with you, Gase wouldn't want that type of player.

Perfect example of a player that thrived with a great qb (Manning) but is average at best without a great qb. I would stay away.

Here's the accusations from his teammates in Denver.

Julius is here to get his money and get out,” one teammate told me last week. “That’s just how some guys are. He didn’t grow up playing this game and it’s just not in his DNA to put it all out there.” When asked if Julius Thomas was soft like some say, he said, ” where there’s smoke, there’s fire.” According to the teammate, Julius Thomas was healthy enough to play multiple times last season but refused to. In one instance Julius Thomas was heard saying, “I’m about 90% – I’m getting close.”

To most NFL players, 90% is as good as new. Most can’t fathom the idea of sitting out at 90%. We would eventually find out that Peyton Manning, at 38 years old, played with a torn quad. To think that Julius Thomas put himself before the team, angered some players. “You have guys taking shots just to get through the half and this dude can’t even play with a minor sprain” one teammate told me. “You can’t win with guys like that,” he added.

I thought he said that Jacksonville was his last stop? As in, he was done after that contract?

@ SOS thanks for the insight. Well no wonder jags are willing to cut him, he got paid. Good thing that some other team will be his employer and not the fins.

I can recall one Broncos game where the TV microphone picked up Peyton Manning saying "f***ing Julius" after he gave away a penalty at the line of scrimmage. The impression was that Peyton was extremely p*ssed off by Thomas' recurring mistakes in games and practice.

This guy is always injured ,we have enough of that at TE. Its a bleak free agent market for TE outisde of Bennet whom we should have moved on last year instead of bringing back Cameron.

Remember this is going to be a good tight end draft and because of that there will be several veteran tight ends released onto the free agent market or made cheaply available via trade.
