I remember before Leinart made his decision, the talk was all Leinart/Rodgers by all the talking heads and media outlets. Then he stayed in school, and the talk became Rodgers/Smith.

So if all 3 were in this draft right now.. What would the discussions be like? Would Smith be a mid to late 1st rounder since Leinart, the top prospect, was in the draft?

Good Question:
Smith is 2nd place QB by default. It would have been really nice to see Smith run something beside the Utah offense.

Does it really matter now?

It does in the sense that if Leinart were in the draft, and Smith was a mid to late 1st Rounder, there is no way a team should take him 2nd overall..

The talk would be that SF was taking Lienart, we were considering Rodgers, and TB was happy cause they didn't have to trade up for Smith.

:chuckle:

It does bring up the question of:

Why reach for a guy this year (ath the 2nd overall) if in previous drafts hes a 2nd rounder?

you have to reach to get QBs, just like you have to overpay to trade for one (2nd for feeley, jags turning down 2nds for garrard, hah)... eventhough smith and rodgers are not the 2 best players in this draft they havea chance of going 1 and 2 cause teams reach to get QBs... just the way the league works...

smith woulda jumped up into the mix prob fallen to arizona or something if he was around with lienhart and rodgers... but they still woulda been reached for and taken

If we believe the reports(who knows?), Leinart would possibly go one(however with his shoulder surgery, he may be the one who would have slipped), Miami has Smith rated over Rodgers, so the situation would be almost the same as right now, we would still be looking Smith, Rodgers, the runners and WR's. No big difference.

it's been answered in other threads: it's not a reach if it's a QB. all QB's taken in the first round have a 75% chance of success. we could choose charlie frye at #2 and this would still be true. ;)

Well Phillip Rivers was considered a late 1st rd pick until the Sr. bowl, and then moved up to the 4th overall pick. I think Smith is better than Rodgers, but both would be top 10 prospects IMO. If Braylon Edwards would've came out last year he probably would've been a late 1st/2nd rd pick but now he's the top prospect in the draft according to some.

I take it your making a dig at my post about the success of 1st round Qbs...

Let me point out that we're not the only ones who see Smith as a 1st rounder. If you take a 1st round RATED player that everyone generally agrees will go in the 1st round, you've got a much better shot (statistically) than in later rounds. :shakeno:

Well, it could be that RODGERS would have been the one to suffer. Everyone, including SF, is keen on Smith, and the only reason Smith hasn't been named for SF's pick is that, basically, he doesn't wanna play there (a la the manning situation last year) and the fact that SF is cheap and Rogers is willing to sign for cheaper because if he doesn't, he could fall from the top 10. So that being said, that would mean Matt would be 1st QB (and 1st overall), Smith would go 2nd, either overall to us or whoever trades up for him, or drop a few spots to Cleveland or TB, and Rodgers wuould go to......?
