If McClain and Bryant are gone, then what?

A lot of people here want either Rolando McClain or Eric Berry. Face it, there is absolutely zero chance that we get Berry; we have to be in the top 3. And so far, the Raiders, Chiefs, Buccaneers, Redskins, Browns, Titans, Lions, and Rams are all slated to pick ahead of us. And the Dolphins are a MUCH better team than 2-4, so I'm expecting a lot of improvement, and we are definitely out of the race for Berry.

So, the other two players that people love are Dez Bryant and Rolando McClain. If both are gone, who do we take? Arrelius Benn? Mt. Cody? A runningback because our two starters are aging quick; Brown is 28 and only has about 2 more years left in the tank, Williams is 32 and he's almost done. A tight end (Jermaine Gresham) because Anthony Fasano can't catch an open pass; even if he does, he fumbles.

I would love the idea of Jahvid Best. Imagine Best on the Wildcat sweeps with his electrifying speed or Brown pounding it up the middle. Even though runningback is a need for the future, Parcells would never draft a runningback; he thinks they are all products of a good offensive line. And we have other needs that are more important.
 
The answer is Brandon Spikes or Taylor Mays, more likely Brandon Spikes.

And lol @ Brown having only 2 more years left in the tank, more like 6 or 7 years
 
I'm not too high on Taylor Mays or Brandon Spikes. I know they are great players but they are also surrounded by too much talent. Their mistakes are often covered up because the other players on their defenses are so good. The Gators are stacked this season, as well as USC (even if they got blown out yesterday), and not many players out of these schools have translated well. With the exception of Troy Palamalu and Carson Palmer, most of the former USC players have been busts.

Secondly, Mays goes for the big hits. They make the highlight reel, but not game changing impacts. He doesn't intercept often, choosing a hard hit rather than a defensive TD. He's fast and strong, but I've never been that high on him and I never will be.

I like Brandon Spikes a LOT more than Taylor Mays. But even still, do we bypass Arrelius Benn, who can be a big time target for Chad Henne for Spikes?
 
And if Brown played for 6 or 7 years, he would be 34 or 35. ALL runningbacks tail off at 30, it's no fluke. LT is a prime example. One of the most durable, reliable, and efficient RB's in history, he is breaking down faster than no other. Not to mention he has already had a serious knee injury. I love Ronnie Brown, he's definitely one of my favorites (that honor would go to Jason Taylor), but the career of runningbacks are always short and it's no exception for Ronnie Brown. Especially with the way he plays by physically running into defenders.
 
As an Illinois fan I've watched arrelious benn throughout his 3 year collegecareer and let me tell you if we're lucky enough to get him that would be huge. Guy is a beast. Reminds alot of people of anquon boldin. So lets hope we can get him.
 
to me this draft is loaded with people I would love to see as a Dolphin. Screw Taylor Mays as Morgan Burnett is the 2nd best Safety in this draft class. I think Tyrone Culver and Chris Clemons are good players and do not see safety as a major need. These are players I really like in this draft class..

gilyard from cincy and Gt's stud WR shoudl get some love in the 2nd also perhaps late first

I think we go rush backer for the 3-4 if we dont get a top flight WR/FS/ILB

We can never have too many great rushers.

Spikes can be had in the 2nd, maybe the 3rd. No thanks on Mays, he isn't a ballhawk FS. Nothing but a hardhitter which we have 2 of already. If we can't get McClain, Spikes would be a great choice. Maybe not with our 1st rounder though, looks like he's going to fall to the 2nd.

Ndamukong Suh - Beast. At 300 LB's I'm not sure if he'd be a fit in the 3-4? With the way Soliai has been playing, a NT in the 1st doesn't look like such a need. This goes for Gerald McCoy as well.

Terrence Cody- at 355, this guy is a mountain of a man, and probably the best 3-4 NT prospect in the draft. But as I stated before, with Soliai playing so well, I don't see NT as being worthy of a 1st rounder unless a top WR, ILB, or FS are already off the board, which is doubtful.

Rolando McClain - If I had a choice, he'd be it. I love McClain and would be stoked if we landed him.

Brandon Spikes - I'd love to get Spikes as well. The question is could he be had in the 2nd round? There's talk of him falling. I think he's overrated, but still a pretty good ILB.

Morgan Burnett - I love Burnett. He should definitely be available as a late 1st rounder, possible 2nd rounder. I like him a lot better than Taylor Mays. 2nd best S in the draft imo. If he declares that is.

Eric Berry - Obviously the best defensive player in the draft, and best DB prospect to come out in a long time. Top 5 pick without a doubt, we'll have no chance to draft him without trading up.

Jerry Hughes - Very good pass rusher. With Porter and JT both well in their 30's, OLB is a need.

Greg Hardy - Another very good pass rusher.

Dez Bryant - I still can't see him falling out of the top 10, but if somehow fell to us, and we didn't draft him, I'd be pissed. He's that big play WR we desperately need.

Damian Williams - A USC WR has to pan out eventually right? Also a very good Punt Returner as well.

Arrelious Benn - Benn has been disappointing so far this season compared to other top WR's. Not necessarily his fault though. It's possible he could fall to the 2nd, and I'd love to draft him .

Brandon Lafell - Has had a very good year. Arguably the best WR in the draft. At 6'3, he's a big time red zone threat. Can't see him falling to us though. I'd love to have him.

I agree with you RD, this draft is stacked, and there are a lot of players I would love to have. I agree with you about Clemons and Culver as well, and Taylor Mays is highly overrated. I'd much rather have Burnett.

Some other players to take note of.

Golden Tate - Man this guy is a playmaker. He might just be available when we pick in the 2nd round. I love this guy.

Eric Decker - Has been very good the last 2 years at Minn. Very reliable hands. Could be had in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Dexter McCLuster - A lot of people get carried away with the whole "let's draft this guy for the Wildcat" thing. This guy can run, this guy can catch. He'd be a hell of a Wildcat weapon, just sayin'.

Jordan Shipley - Great receiver, even better Punt Returner.

Naaman Roosevelt - One hell of a WR. Not many people know abut (plays for Buffalo), but he's been one of the best WR's the last 2 years statistically. Could be a later round gem.

Danario Alexander - At 6'5, he'd be a red zone target. But I hope Patrick Turner will turn into that so we can focus on drafting a playmaker at WR who picks up YAC. Bryan Anderson from Central Michigan falls under this category as well.

Dennis Pitta - One hell of a pass catching TE. Probably the 2nd best TE behind Gresham.

Joe Pawalek - One of the better ILB's in the draft. May be available in the 3rd.

Pat Angerer - Very good ILB at Iowa. Should be available in the later rounds and one who I feel could be a pretty good one.

Some very good safety prospects in this draft as well. Definitely looking like another draft stacked at WR, especially in the first 3 rounds. If we fail to find a WR this time around, I'll really be pissed. Of course we could just get get Vincent Jackson too though :chuckle:
 
I say no to Brandon Spikes (even before the eye incident) because to me, Spikes = Crowder.
 
Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma, if he comes out after his junior year....everyone talks about "Mount Cody" of Bama but he is way too heavy....size is great but Cody is going to eat himself out of the league. McCoy is going to be a shut down nose tackle in the NFL and if McClain is gone at the LB spot, and Dez at WR, then I think McCoy would be a nice pickup
 
I don't think McCoy is a nose tackle....he has the quickest first step you're ever going to see from a 300 pound defensive tackle....I just don't think it's taking advantage of his skillset to stick him on the nose and ask him to be a 2-gapper....he's a one gap penetrator....

Personally I'd lean more towards a Marvin Austin or Dan Williams as potential nose tackles....their game is more power based than McCoy's....

I believe playing NT is less about SPLITTING a double team and more about COMMANDING a double team...

Cody was obviously put on this earth for one reason....to be a nose tackle in a 3-4 defense....but I think there's a potential problem or two on the horizon there as well....

He needs to lose more weight to be effective.....he doesn't always fire out low and play with the correct leverage....stamina is an issue....he's a 2 down player from now until the rest of his life.....and I think once he gets to the NFL where the offensive lineman are bigger, stronger, meaner, more athletic and better coached......Cody's 50-70 pound weight advantage is going to be less effective...

He's not quick....he's not going to be effective stunting around a formation, etc.....

I just think he's a reach in the 1st round......and this is coming from a life long Bama guy....

Besides, we have Soliai, who is becoming more and more of a proven commodity as time goes on. WR has to be our first need addressed, if we need a strong safety that can cover then we can always address that with Myron Rolle in the 2nd or 3rd.
 
If neither is there when we pick i say trade down and take that tight end from Oklahoma. We need another 2nd or third round pick.
