I want this thread to give everyone an opportunity to say exactly what they would try to do if they were put in Sabans place this offseason. Try not to diss on anyones ideas, just add your own. Feel free to compliment any, or change them slightly.

What I would do:

Trade: I'd trade either Madison, Frerotte or Ricky and a 1st round pick to Minnesotta for Daunte Culpepper. Daunte, despite what he recently said, is looking to leave once he picks up his money.
Benefit: We get rid of one of our aging defensive players or a bad quarterback. We already have a star running back and a decent backup. Yes, we lose a first round pick, but we pick up a NFL tested and proven QB for it. Better then drafting a first round QB if you ask me.
Negative: Losing Ricky Williams means losing a "one two punch" in Mularkeys system. But gaining Daunte Culpepper opens up many more doors for the passing game, thus enabling our running game to flourish.

Free Agency: T.O. is a definite pick-up. Now that I have Daunte, T.O. is drooling to play for us. Which means we can afford to pay him slightly less then he deserves, at first, WITH incentives if he keeps his mouth shut and doesnt cause trouble. This guy is motivated by money, and if you dangle that in his face, you can keep him quiet. But give him what he deserves eventually, or he's going to cause everything to crumble. First sign of the old T.O. and he's gone.
Benefits: Oh boy, with Chambers, Booker and TO on the field at the same time, who do you protect against? Double cover T.O. and Daunte hits Chambers in the endzone. BAM.
Negatives: TO could potentially be a cancer to the team. Fans will be upset, but as shown by the Ricky Williams return, fans dont know everything.

The Draft: With the most glaring holes in our offense taken care of, we can focus primarily on defense this draft. Pick up some DBs, some young lineman, good safety. Get them young and take advantage of the experience our older guys have by teaching the rookies a few things.

Odds and Ends: I'd scout around March 1'st to see if any Offensive Lineman become available and try to bring them in.

aside from a good LT prospect in either the 1st or second round, draft defense in every pick. we can patch up some small things through udfa and free agency. i would not trade for daunte. hes really questionable with that knee of his. most likely we are going to keep frerotte.(personally i wouldnt mind having sage still here for TC and battle it out)

I would stay exactly where I am at and trade no one cept Madison and then draft:

1. Huff, Greenway,Darnell Bing
2. OT
3. Brodie Croyle
4. sleeper LB if Greenway not picked or a safety that falls if we get Greenway
Madison trade pick right here: Another LB
7. QB
7. C/G sleeper
7. Beefy sleeper DT

Owens or Hutchinson in FA but cant get both. Keep Ricky cus you cant find more value than what he gives us and Ronnie Brown has always played with 2 RB sets. I dont think we will trade Ricky unless we get something significant. Trading ricky for a mid rounder is stupid. Madison is the only one that is trading material right now and teams may just wait. Thats it, the rest is the system, coaching, and picking up guys who are no names who end up surprising us all.

Trade I would ask Sam Madison to restructure 1st and foremost, but if he wouldn't I would try to get anywhere from a 3rd round to 4th round pick, packaged with a lower-tier WR. A good possiblility could be Atlanta, who I believe is willing to get rid of Peerless Price.
BenefitsThe benefit of this trade is that it gives us a fairly-good receiver who can be our 3rd WR. We could sign him to a new contract with incentives, if he produces then keep him, if not then release.

Draft1st Rd - Michael Huff (S) Texas - Jay Cutler will be gone by our pick. Regardless of the need for QB, our secondary was our major concern last year.
2nd RdBroderick Bunkley (DT) FSU - Bunkley has flown under the radar most of the season, but he could turn out to be the best DL to come out of FSU. EVER!!!!!
3rd RdMike Degory (C) UF - If he was to fall this far, this would be a no-brainer pick for Saban, but I doubt he does.
4th RdBrodie Croyle (QB) ALA - Has probably the strongest arm in the draft, if he could sit a year behind a veteran and learn, this could be a major pick.
6th RdKelly Jennings (S) Miami - A little undersized for a NFL Safety, but would probably be switched to CB.
7th RdWillie Reid (WR) FSU - A small WR with "sure" hands. Is very explosive in the return game, with 5 PR TD's the last 2 years.

Free Agents#1 Steve Hutchinson (OG) - This is our main priority at the beginning of the FA period. A good football team begins and ends with the offensive line.
#2 - Julian Peterson (OLB) - If we sign Hutchinson or not, we still need to make a decent push for this guy, who would instantly make our LB's "Top Notch"
#3 - Chris Weinke (QB) - Carolina will probably let him go. He would be a great back-up for us, who could step-in and be serviceable if needed.
Release Junior Seau, Reggie Howard, Seth McKinney, Travis Minor, Lorenzo Diamond, Tebucky Jones, Eddie Moore, and Sage Rosenfels.

Draft Ko simpson this guys gonna be a pro bowler for years to come and he's versitile enuff to play wide out

Reasons to not get Culpepper:

1) He has a serious knee injury. 3 of the 4 tendons were torn. It could be a calendar year before he is all the way back (that would be November, half way thru the season). He can't be traded while injured. The two teams just won't do it. The only way to acquire him before the doctors release him would be if he were a FA...not going to happen.

2) If he recovers early and is cleared, it certainly won't be until late in TC. Picking him up in late August and then expecting him to learn a new offense and still probably not 100% and still be effective ??? Doubtful at best....

3) Who are the Vikes going to replace him with ?? Gus....I think not. Brad Johnson is 30-something...so he's not the replacment, might fill-in for a while, but not replace. Even with our #16 pick and theirs to trade up with, you still have to have a trading partner. At least 5 of the teams in the top 10, where arguably the top 3 QBs will go, need QBs...desperately. Do they take a chance on an Omar Jacobs in the first with one of their picks...is he worth that ??

4) He is a terribly inaccurate passer of the short and intermediate passes. He's been successful, until this season, with the deep ball but had no elite WRs like Moss to throw to. (He couldn't overthrow Moss). He has made his mark as a mobile QB but with this injury, will he still be that way ?? BTW, we have a terribly inaccurate passer already...

While the facts are that we need a QB and it is rumored that he could be acquired, it's really doubtful that he is the guy for us or that he is physically going to be ready to help us. There are better options for us than Culpepper. Had the injury not happened, I would be inclined to think a little differently.

As for TO, I think most of us feel that his negatives outweigh the positives. If WR were a need position, I'd say go for it. But if we can add an experienced 3rd WR in FA, it might be cheaper and would complement the 1-2 punch of CC and MB enough to make us successful as well. Remember...there is no T-E-A-M in T-O.....

First off Price isnt on the Falcons anymore, he was released towards the beginning of the year, Michael Huff wont be there around 16, as much as i hope we could get him, we dont need a DT with the 2nd round pick, Jennings is a CB not a S, and there's no way he'll be there in the 6th round, he'll be gone after the 2nd round probably. Also how is Chris Weinke any better than Rosenfels?

I'll start by saying that I love what Ricky did for us this year and I hope we keep him and Ronnie together but if we could trade Ricky straight up for David Carr I think I'd do it. Ronnie could start getting the bulk of the carries and we could bring in another RB to balance the backfield. We wouldn't be able to replace Ricky but we could pick up a decent 2nd RB or see what Sammy Morris could do.

At WR I'd be interested in talking to TO but I'd also check out all options (Don't kill me on this thought but what about Andre Johnson? I thought I heard somewhere he may be a RFA or something...?)

Draft Huff.

Pick up Nate Clements and or J. Petterson (I'd prefer Nate to build up the secondary)

#1 - Forget about Culpepper

Madison - no trade value everyone knows he's leaving.

Draft
1. Huff or Jimmy Williams if he falls but I doubt it- Whatever the best safety/db on the board is.
2. Bobby Carpenter if he falls, otherwise best LB there.
3. Brodie Croyle
4. WR - See who fell that should have been a Day 1 pick (like Poole)
7. QB
7. Another big LB hybrid
7. True NT

Free Agency Wish List
OG Hutchinson (he'll demand top dollar)
OLB Julian Peterson (see above)
DT Rocky Bernard (i mentioned him earlier this year)
TO, with an EXTREMELY short leash

BTW
Keep Ricky, we've spent 2 firsts on him already, he's cheap and he's good we won't get true value for him. Imagine the #s he'll put up with 16 games vs 12.

Man I think I agree with ALL of that...Well done.

Dom Capers = blitz, Nick Saban = blitz (as we saw by our leading the NFL in sacks)

The problem with the blitz? You need corners to back it up. Preferably bigger corners with soft hands, since you're going to get a lot of jump balls.

Huff, CB, Texas in the 1st.
