Hey - just for one second... Imagine if The San Francisco 49ers did NOT take Alex Smith with their first overall pick, and instead took, I don't know, Ronnie Brown.

Do you think the Dolphins would have taken Smith with #2? And even if they did, he lost the starting job to Tim Rattay, who is basically no better than the Qbs we have here, so we'd still be in trouble as far as QB goes....

Still, with Ricky coming back, it wouldn't have been a bad pick, since with Morris in the backfield as well, we would have a solid RB corp. What do you guys think?

The team would be in trouble this year with the QB, but they would still have the QB of the future on the roster.

that's honestly sad that smith lost to rattay....
last year i can understand cause the giants had warner, tiki, shockey, philips held out, and the steelers had a solid team....but honestly, rattay? wtf...the 49ers have no one, there's no shot they're gonna win this year, why not let smith have the shot?

I guarantee by week 5 Smith is the QB. Rattay was given the job based on knowing the system and being more comfortable. Smith is obviously the more talented of the 2 and will have the job, its just a matter of a young guy paying his dues! If the Niners would have taken Brown I would have loved to have had Smith, although it wouldn't have helped us much this year.:(

Imagine IF I hadn't read the 1st post or most of the posts following it.

We'd have drafted Cadallic. At the time of the draft Ricky wasn't back, and with him their are no guarentees that he'll stay back.

Couldn't this apply to other QBs in the league as well???

so what? why does it matter if he "knows the system" or not, they aren't gonna win with the team they have now, especially with rattay at the helm...learning the system on paper is a lot different then being in a game, i think it would be better for the niners to go 0-4 with smith actually getting in game experience than going 4-0 in the beginning with rattay (no shot of ever happening)

I'm kind of glad that we didn't get Alex Smith now, because the team will have to do now with what they have at qb, but other pieces are coming into place for Miami, especially on Defense with Crowder, Daniels. I just think Alex Smith will be an average qb, not necessarily a bust but not good either. That's a lot of money on an average qb from the Niners. I think next year is the year to get a qb, becuase it looks like their is going to some really good talent in the draft, plus Brees or Rivers in San Diego. Aaron Rodgers seems like he could eventually be a bust, I'm not talking about struggling, because most rookie qbs do their first year, but He was awful at throwing the ball, it wasn't once but five times, that he couldn't make a throw to a Wr on a screen pass, the ball was going towards his feet, or up above his head, not accurate at all. Screens passes should be easy, it's like a 5 yard horizontal pass./
