Cam Cameron wasn’t my first choice, I was a supporter of Chan Gailey for HC. But really, I have been even MORE of a supporter of the way the Dolphins took their time in the interview PROCESS... No “making haste slowly†here... This was S L O W and deliberate and I liked that A LOT! .... I had and still have some major concerns about Cameron, first and foremost his overall won-loss record as a head coach.... We can all paint that record in different ways to suit our personal perspectives, but the bottom line after all the rhetoric you still have 18-37 staring you in the face.... There’s an old quote from Winston Churchill that I like very much, and I think applies here : “The TRUTH is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. Ignorance may deride it. But in the end, there it is†... Now it could be and I hope it is true that he’s learned from his IU experience, learned and reflected on what worked and where his pitfalls were.... One thing that seems to be the case, looking at this totally objectively, is that CC’s OFFENSES at IU were productive, effective, high-scoring offenses...I’d be willing to bet they lost a good % of those 37 games on the D side.....Now he has JT, ZT and Capers....The fact that he’s Marty’s OC in SD is indicatin that CC is an awesome football mind.... He’s obviously a helluva football coach. You don’t become an NFL position coach without having an awesome football mind, and coaching skills, let alone an NFL OC....

Yes, I liked, like Chan Gailey. I think he’s a helluva football coach, and a proven winner, and I felt like Gailey improving from a .500+ winning percentage to the next level of .650 to .750 with the Phins was much more likely than Cameron improving upon a sub .500...Let’s face facts , no matter who of the three “finalists†that were picked, everyone here would be counting on any one of them to IMPROVE upon their past HC performances....But that’s all old news the front office has CHOSEN, and as a loyal Phin fan I SUPPORT the descision, and HOPE for the very very best for Cam Cameron. and the team and hope my concerns were unfounded...Cam Cameron is MY COACH now and here’s some things I really like about him so far....

1- GOOD DUDE - Just from his interviews and PC, the impression I come away with is that this is a genuinely GOOD MAN. I believe him when he speaks. He doesn’t give you that uneasy, “greasy†feel Saban did.... I get the feeling the players will really respond to this and ENJOY playing for this man.... I think he’s someone they will go to WAR with and FOR.....

2- COACH FIRST - Similar to the Shula days, you get the feeling Cameron is going to put his responsibility as the HC of the Miami Dolphins over and above any perception of him........ JJ and Saban were concerned, FIRST, with “JJ Inc†and “Saban Inc†respectively, and THEN the Miami Dolphins second....With DW I always got the feeling that he made moves and decisions and said things to try to save his job....

3- REALLY WANTS TO BE HC OF THE MIAMI DOLPHINS - I believe him when he says it’s a dream come true and he wants to be here as long as the “other guy†.... I sincerely HOPE his record and performance bears that out.....

4-OFFENSIVE MIND AND HISTORY WITH QBS – We desperately NEED this at this point in time.... Whether it’s Culpepper, Harrington, Lemon, a FA, or a rookie behind center next season, I think CC can and will finally HELP SETTLE the QB position over the next couple years.... Hopefully it won’t come to this, but if three years down the road the wins and losses aren’t there and CC is fired, I believe he will have settled our QB position.....

5-PHILOSOPHY ON HOW YOU BUILD AN OFFENSE- This was my single favorite thing he said in his introductory press conference.... (paraphrasing) “you build a team from the MIDDLE outwardâ€Â. “you start with the CENTER, and move outward from thereâ€Â...... I believe he was talking about FIRST the QB and second, the CENTER POSITION, and then GUARDS, TACKLES, ENDS, BACKS.... Our offense, as it stands today, has never had a blueprint that I’m aware of or that I can see. It seems to be a collection of spare parts , pieced together in no particular order.....To BUILD the “O†from the center-out is something I HAVE and DO firmly believe in, and I was SO HAPPY to hear that!!!!

6- WILL ALLOW HIS COACHES TO DO WHAT THEY DO BEST.... CC in charge of building and running our offense and Capers, running the D has a very very GOOD SOUND TO IT! I just hope we don’t waste the remainder of JT and ZT’s careers before we get an offense that is worthy of THEIR sacrifice commitments and performances on D.....

7- FOOTBALL IS FUN!!!! – I think he takes his responsibility and commitment to WIN very very seriously, but at the same time I think he still hasn’t lost sight that FOOTBALL IS A GAME, AND IT IT SUPPOSED TO BE FUN. FUN for the players, FUN for the FANS and yes, even FUN for the MEDIA ....I’m growing weary of all these coaches that “VILLIFY†the media, and take themselves so seriously (see bill parcels here in dfw) ..... The media is a coach’s and team’s CONNECTION with their sole reason for BEING.... THE FANS! I was happy to hear CC reach out to the media....

No he wasn’t my first choice, and I HOPE I am chowing down on some serious crow about that in a few years from now when he’s passing the Lombardi Trophy to WH, but I really do like the 7 things above about CC. In the end, though it WILL all come down to wins and losses.... An 18-37 record as HC of the Phins does not coach a 56th game, and the NFL Head Coaching graveyard is littered with excellent NFL Coordinators, but for now He’s NOW MY COACH and I support HIM and the Phins 100%!!!!

I like his stated philosophy too. Lets see what kind of players he can bring in. One thing that should work in his behalf is that he's not tied to one and only one type of player for his scheme like Saban was. Its going to be much easier drafting for the guy because he wont be as particular as Saban was. He has absolutely the right attitude about offense. Saban always rambled off some bizarre horsedung about this or that but Cameron was pretty clear the job of the offense is to score and what I really liked is that he said every opponent is different and he doesnt care about balance in game. If he has to throw it 50 times to win he will. If he has to run it 50 times he will. Whatever is needed to score.

Saban was a tool when it came to offense. He would ramble about a balanced attack during the week and then we would throw 50 times in the game Sunday.

By the way, great post

Good Post...I wanted to add that the past record of a coach in no way reflects the future results in a new position from what I have seen. When Saban was hired we all felt good....Why?? Because he was a winner at LSU and had more wins than losses everywhere he had been. The result was two terrible years of football that still leaves a stinch that I hope disappears by the first game of 07. I think it is more important to get the right guy in the right position at the right time. I hope CC is all of that for the Fins...If he is not then maybe Wayne should ask that Old Lady(No Disrespect)that owns the Bears because she obviously knows what she is doing!

 This makes no sense. Essentially you arguing for a guy that approaches his decison making in an ad hoc manner. There is no philosophy there. Why are people criticising Saban for picking players that fit his scheme? That is what I would expect from a head coach or GM. Otherwise you are just approaching the draft and FA as a dart board. Did you want him to pick players that Mel Kiper thinks are good? That another team thinks are good?

   This is what I actually really like about Saban. It is a page taken from the BIll PArcells and Bill Bellichek book of football philosophy: Don't go blabbing to the media and providing them with any information that your opponent may use. It makes perfect sense to me. What are you suggesting? Did you want Saban to open press conferences by saying: " Well gentleman, we're going to run the ball 35 times next Sunday. On our first psosseion, we're going to throw a post to Chambers. On third and short , we are going to use play action all the time, and hit Randy on a crossing route. When we get inside the 20, we're going to run a reverse to keep the opposing team off balance. On our first possession in the second half, I think we'll try a flea flicker....." and then actually follow through with what he said?

I agree with everything in your post. I was supporting CG but realize now the last thing we needed was a college coach. We've got a seasoned pro who has been in the thick of and responsible for the high powered O in SD. I can't wait to see what he does. Its a shame that once we get the HC issue settled RM has to cause a distraction at the senior bowl with all this Tenessee bs.

Great post Zonk.
I would'nt worry about his IU record. IU does'nt get top recruits. They get leftovers from Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue, Notre Dame and the rest of the big ten. It would be like being the last place team in the NFL and getting the last pick in the draft every year.

Point one: Cameron's philosophy is give me weapons and I'll figure out how to best utilize them. That's a better foundation to start with. It means he casts a bigger net and therefore more of the player pool is available to him. Obviously he's going to have some types of requests i.e more speed at receiver but he's not going to narrow it down to the point that only two or three receivers in the entire draft fit those criteria. Saban's problem reported in PFW (a recent issue dont know which one) was that he couldnt get Mueller to understand what he was looking for. Perhaps it was because he was too particular. If you have a very narrow definition of what you're looking for it will take you forever to find those players. You need some felxibility and Cameron seems like he gets it where Saban didnt

Point two. Parcells and Belichik both have basic models they use to byuild teams but have both provent they are flexible enough to win with what they get which leads to point three Saban should never be mentioned in the same breath as Parcells or Belichik

Anyone who simply looks at an 18-37 football record, at a basketball school, and bases their opinion on that, without examining the entire situation, is displaying a simplicity of thought that renders their opinions worthless to me.

Cam Camerons poor record at Indiana is as meaningless as Pete Carrolls amazing winning record at USC.

College (amatuer) football is not played on an even footing like it is in the NFL. There is no salary cap or roster limitations or draft that ensures parity.

Cam Cameron, like every IU coach since the 1940's had as much chance of winning in the Big ten/twelve as Vanderbilt does in the SEC.

If the whole Nick Saban debacle has taught me anything, there truly is a difference between being a college football coach and being a professional coach, as little Nikki found out, and ran back to the pee wees league.

hey LOTION,
