I was looking at our 08 depth chart:-

Bell
Hill
Allen
Goodman
Porter
Roth
Crowder
Ayodole
Holliday
Langford
Ferguson.

With Jason Allen and mainly Courtney Anderson coming in on nickel situatuions and no depth in regards to rotation through whole of defence.

This year, I believe, we have vastly improved.

Bell
G Wilson is a definate upgrade over R Hill and much more physical in the style of player the FO demands.
W.Allen
V. Davis / S. Smith - still to be seen, but if you asked me was i more confident with eithe rof these two this year compared to how i fealt about Goodman last year, im taking the youngsters.
Porter, lets be blunt, i dont belive we can expect same production this year.
Roth - I believe he will have a vastly improved season, predicting 70-80 tackles and approx 8 sacks, due to full camp as OLB!.
Crowder by rumour is and camp reports is sounding more mature and physically improved.
Ayodole ......dependable as last year and FO big on unseen work.
Langford more experienced and explosive second yr in but i liked Holliday.
Merling as above.
Ferguson may be less of an impact.

I can see 2 possibly 3 down sides as stated with Porter, Ferguson and possible Merling, who could also be improvement.

I see 5 improvements through experience and better players, but mostly in the cohesion and toughness we can now bring with second year in system.

But I believe our biggest improvement is with the depth and options we now have.

I would love too see us use as above the 3/4 on 1/2 downs.

But on 3rd and obvious passing situation we have the options of now being more exotic.

Wld love to see

Wilson move to SS
S.Smith at FS
W.Allen
V. Davis
J.Allen / E Green
Porter
Taylor
Anderson
Roth
Wake
Merling.

Line Merling up over Centre and let the 5 LB rome, much like a Rex Ryan, Lebau or Belicheck wld do and zone blitz. Im looking at it and i wld not have a clue which 4/5 wld be coming as G wilson is also an option.

You're trying to get Bell off the field and J. Allen on the field?

ok...

not only that, but why would we take Ferguson out of the game?

I'd much rather have Bell on the field and Smith at corner over JAllen at corner. That just doesn't make much sense at all to me.

you're joking right? where do you have Y. Bell at? and J.Allen/E.Green alternating with each other at the other CB position opposite Will Allen....call me crazy, but i'd rather alternate Vontae/Sean at the CB position opposite Will, and let them learn on the go...

I like the gibril, smith, davis, taylor and wake additions to add to our pash rush = picks because our secondary doesnt suck idea. Lets hope its as simple as that.

Why would we take Bell out of our lineup when he was probably the best player we had on defense last year for a rookie who hasn't even proved anything in this league yet we don't want Smith to turn into Jason Allen with the position change anyways and Will Allen is a free agent in a couple of seasons let the dude play CB and learn the system so that he can be a great cornerback for us in the future. I believe u may have been drunk when u made this thread.

its DEFENSE........ not deFENCE i know the sign must have gotten you confused you know with the big D and then a FENCE..

I've had thoughts of a 2-5 front in passing downs. I would put SPACE EATERS Ferguson & Soliai on the line with JT, Porter, Roth, Crowder, and Wake or Ayodele behind them.

Crowder patrols the middle going side to side. JT, Roth, Porter, or Wake can come up on the line or stay back, or Ayodele is our best cover LB. QB has no idea where anyone is coming from.

Thoughts?

Guys, in all due respect to you and Bell, the poster is putting up a blitz package on a passing down. DB's are gonna be against 3-4 WR's, and mostly in single coverage. That is not Bell's strength.

I may not agree with who he has in but, can understand taking Bell out on those few plays per game.

High tink everywon thunderstood. LOL

Anyone for a spelling bee? :)

trust a yank to steal the english language and then incorrect me for spelling it correctly!!!!!!!!!

Its defence in UK ....you lot spell it incorrectly!!!!!!!!!!

I dont think some read the post.

When i state J Allen / E Green i dont mean rotate i mean or, or either, i.e whoever is in form/playing better/not injured.

The argument for saying you would prefer S Smith or Vontae instead of 2 before mentioned.... if you check what was chosen they are already there.

Bell is known for being a superb hard hitting run support SS, but not as a Zone or man covergae man. I like Bell but lets not fit square pegs in round holes on passing downs. I believe on passing situation I would prefer J Allen / E Green rather than Y Bell. My opinion. I can never imagine FO asking Y Bell to cover R Moss as they did J Allen last year.

I cant believe the argument stating to leave Ferguson on the field, when he is knackered on 2nd down just trying to hold is ground as opposed to actually trying to get to QB. I watched lots of Steeler, Ravens and Patriot games last year. Wilfork and Hampton were never kept on long and 3rd. Granted Ngata was but he is freakish fast for his size. I even seen Jarret Johnson line up over Centre for Ravens with 5 LB roaming behind, so why not Merling or even Langford lining up as NT on passing downs.

And I will admit when i am wrong about C Anderson ..... thumbs up to you.

Why cant we be more open minded on passing downs? Some of the best SS in past 10 yrs, Rodney Harrison, John Lynch and Lawyer Milloy were mostly, not always taken out or blitzed on long and 3rd....so why when we have plenty of CB options, would we, by choice, keep im on field?

I missed this one, which lets be fair wasnt a big miss.

I didnt say convert him, soley into a FS .......did i????

On long and third he can line up as a FS, covering the deep ball, where he can use his excellent hands to create turnovers. I agree that he should play nickel corner and be groomed to be successor to W Allen, but why pigeon hole him soley as CB on all downs. Why cant we be flexible. Patriots, Steelers and Ravens have had LB catching touchdowns, WR lining up at FS and LB playing NT. God Bless Jimmy Johnson and Steve Spag, but they had CB blitzing QB, CB lining up at safety and even, and this is crazy, lining up Justin Tuck as DT on passing downs. This guy will never devolop now!!!!!! Ive even seen Albert Haynsworth play DE for Titans and Warren Sapp catch a TD. Bloody hell we even had Chad lining up at WR and Ronnie Brown taking direct snaps..................Crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
