These are quotes from various articles in which Saban describes the QB competition, and gives clues to deciphering the QB depth chart.

Saban has never named a starter or who's a back-up.

Saban defended Frerotte:

"It looked like we were playing on the beach," Saban said of the infield.[/i] "It was the same for both teams, but I'd like to be at least fair in the evaluation that if we had a little better circumstance, a little bit of field position, maybe Gus -- being 2 out of 3 -- didn't really have a lot of opportunities to do much.

Saban criticized Feeley:

"Now in the second quarter I felt like we came unglued a little bit,"Saban added. "We didn't always have good field position but certainly had better circumstances to operate in and didn't always execute like we'd like and that's not exactly what we wanted to see."

"A.J. might have been trying too hard to make something happen in that circumstance and didn't see things the way we'd like for him to see them, in terms of where he chose to throw the ball," Saban said.

In describing a key element in Feeley's decision making ability with analysis of a specific play:

"I sometimes use the phrase that it's not always bad if every series ended in a kick," Saban said. "That means you either scored a touchdown, you're kicking a field goal or at worst you have to punt.

Feeley was 4 of 17 for 56 yards and had one interception that was returned for a touchdown. Aside from the interception, Feeley had another play that was a decidedly bad decision to throw after he had escaped from a near-safety.

After escaping a defensive lineman, Feeley continued to run to his left, then tossed an incomplete pass into an area where there were three defenders and two more close by. There was only one Dolphins receiver, and the ball could have easily been picked off and returned for a score.

"If you have a play that breaks down ... there's a time to say, `Hey, this is a bad play, it didn't work. ... I can't make the situation worse by making a poor judgment or decision about what I do with the ball now.'"

Rosenfelds has been impressive, he went 17 of 25 passes, 217 yards and 2 TD's. (with and against scrubs)

On Sage's play:

"Sage did a good job when he was in there, in terms of managing the two-minute [drill], throwing the ball and making some good throws and plays," Saban said. "That is something that will certainly be evaluated, but not be discussed [Friday] in terms of who goes where."

Why mention the "depth chart" if there wasn't some purpose. Sage will not be the starter. And if Feeley is reduced to 3rd string, it may not be his spot forever:

"I don't think anything is forever," Saban said. "I think that everybody has a responsibility and an obligation to be accountable for what their job is at any position on this team and any player on this team."

"That is something that will certainly be evaluated in terms of who goes where."

Good post! It will be interesting to see if Sage is the #2 QB. Saban appears to be hinting about this move.

That sounds as if the depth chart will not be changed in terms of where sage will be.

You are taking that out of context. He mentioned that it wouldn't be talked about in his press conference, not discussed as an action to be taken regarding the depth chart.

My bad, I didn't know that friday meant press conference, I thought it just meant a friday meeting between the coaches.

I agree with this. I will be surprised if Feeley is NOT 3rd on the depth chart. Or maybe even released. HE costs WAY too much to be a thrid stringer.

I can see a scenario where Saban decides to move Sage up to #2 and take offers for Feeley. That would free Saban to grab a 3rd stringer and find out what he's made of (Davey? Couch?- I'm just throwing those names out, there's a multitude of 3rd stringers available now and more to be added soon). Saban, I believe, is more interested in players that have desire and intangibles. I think he is extremely frustrated at the lack of determination and ambition he has at QB.

Feeley doesn't cost much yet. His salary doesn't take a jump until after this season, when a roster bonus is owed to him. His salary then jumps from around $600,000 to $3.5 million, and that roster bonus will tack on the 5th year of his deal. Miami would be taking only a small cap hit if they released him.

Release Feeley already,I don't care what he cost us,take the hit and move on,it's over.Go to war with Gus,Sage, and pick up another project and see if he'll develop or something.

You're right. I forgot about that.

If we need to cut a qb, I would let Frerotte go, is old with no upside, Feeley is not better, but is younger and Sage need a chance to start. Our QBs situation is very bad, keeping the younger ones make more sense to me. If Feeley doesn't improve you can cut him next year....I see no reason to seat with Gus knowing that is very limited and is not the future for sure.

I don´t think the cost has anything to do with it at this point. If you can´t get the job done then you can´t get it done. Don´t expect to see Feeley in a Fins uni next year.

Look...these quotes came from Saban's day after press conference...You can read into anything you want, but putting 2 and 2 together doesn't always equal 4...Sage has one good outing against the 3rd stringers when 2/3's of the guys playing were fighting for jobs and everyone is annointing him as the next Marino...

No one has said this, however it is an evidence of your own insecurities and lack of confidence that produces these suppositions. Don't confuse hype from others as a kickstand for your opinions.
