These are quotes from various articles in which Saban describes the QB competition, and gives clues to deciphering the QB depth chart.
Saban has never named a starter or who's a back-up.
Saban defended Frerotte:
"It looked like we were playing on the beach," Saban said of the infield.[/i] "It was the same for both teams, but I'd like to be at least fair in the evaluation that if we had a little better circumstance, a little bit of field position, maybe Gus -- being 2 out of 3 -- didn't really have a lot of opportunities to do much.
Saban criticized Feeley:
"Now in the second quarter I felt like we came unglued a little bit,"Saban added. "We didn't always have good field position but certainly had better circumstances to operate in and didn't always execute like we'd like and that's not exactly what we wanted to see."
"A.J. might have been trying too hard to make something happen in that circumstance and didn't see things the way we'd like for him to see them, in terms of where he chose to throw the ball," Saban said.
In describing a key element in Feeley's decision making ability with analysis of a specific play:
"I sometimes use the phrase that it's not always bad if every series ended in a kick," Saban said. "That means you either scored a touchdown, you're kicking a field goal or at worst you have to punt.
Feeley was 4 of 17 for 56 yards and had one interception that was returned for a touchdown. Aside from the interception, Feeley had another play that was a decidedly bad decision to throw after he had escaped from a near-safety.
After escaping a defensive lineman, Feeley continued to run to his left, then tossed an incomplete pass into an area where there were three defenders and two more close by. There was only one Dolphins receiver, and the ball could have easily been picked off and returned for a score.
"If you have a play that breaks down ... there's a time to say, `Hey, this is a bad play, it didn't work. ... I can't make the situation worse by making a poor judgment or decision about what I do with the ball now.'"
Rosenfelds has been impressive, he went 17 of 25 passes, 217 yards and 2 TD's. (with and against scrubs)
On Sage's play:
"Sage did a good job when he was in there, in terms of managing the two-minute [drill], throwing the ball and making some good throws and plays," Saban said. "That is something that will certainly be evaluated, but not be discussed [Friday] in terms of who goes where."
Why mention the "depth chart" if there wasn't some purpose. Sage will not be the starter. And if Feeley is reduced to 3rd string, it may not be his spot forever:
"I don't think anything is forever," Saban said. "I think that everybody has a responsibility and an obligation to be accountable for what their job is at any position on this team and any player on this team."
"That is something that will certainly be evaluated in terms of who goes where."
