This has gone beyond the point of simple mockery. The NBA installs a rule specifically to help out the Knicks by allowing them to get rid of Allan Houston's mammoth 20 mil a yr contract. So what does the brilliant one do? He gets rid of Jerome Williams, a player who was on a three year contract worth 6.5 mil a year. Oddly enough, noone bothered to tell Isiah that the third year of the deal was voidable, so essentially he has managed to turn a lousy 2 year deal into an even more absurd one for 3 years. So not only has he managed to screw over the Knicks during his tenure, but now has made it impossible for the Knicks to sign a max player in '06.

From what they said on TV this morning, Houston is comtemplating retirement seriously, this may be what is going on. If not then Isiah is even dumber than I thought he was and I basically thought having a drooling, slobbering vegtable as a GM would be better than Isiah before this. Isiah is the worst front office guy in the NBA. Its obvious Isiah isnt savvy or smart enough to run a pro franchise.

I also heard that's why they were planning on waiving Williams. If Houston retires for medical reasons his contract will be covered by insurance. Although, with Thomas in charge who knows.

It doesnt matter if Houston retires or not. With the signings they made this year and buying out this contract they just eliminated the one hope NY fans had, that Lebron would sign with them in 2 yrs.

I wouldnt put "hope" and NY fans in the same sentence, doesnt fit with Isiah incharge. :D
Larry Brown MIGHT be able to mold a 1st round playoff team out of this trash but even that is maybe 50/50. If Brown can make this team a contender he without question the greatest coach ever to live in any sport.
I dont think the Houston retirement is neccesarily about saving salary cap space just about insurance covering it. Im not familiar with all the retirement/salary cap rules.
I dont see Lebron playing under Larry Brown or with the Knicks. Cleveland has done all it can to provide him some players he should be fine in Cleveland. Cleveland has a better team than New York does.

:rofl3:

That's great.

If the Knicks had just cleared cap room, they would have been in position to offer the max to James, as ferret notes. Moreover, James probably would take it. His contract with Nike calls for an additional chunk of money (I don't know how much, but I'm almost certain it's over $20 million) if he plays in NY, Chicago or LA. So, by ditching the Cavs for the Knicks, he'd get something like a $20 million bonus, and have infinitely more marketing opportunities. All the Knicks had to do was bide their time, and let Larry Brown do the best he could with what he has. And he blew it. He signed Jerome James, who's a mortal lock for this year's Michael Olowakandi Memorial "Why the Hell Did We Give Him a Long-Term Contract" Signing. This effectively kills their chances to sign LeBron.

The Houston thing was silly. Even if you THINK he's retiring, why not be absolutely sure that money's off the cap?

i hear strong rumors about houston's retirement also...

Houston said if he can't go at 100% by the 1st game, he won't be around by the 2nd game and he will hang it up.

They don't need to offer the MAX to Lebron. Lebron's shoe deal says if he plays in Chicago,NY, or LA......then the shoe company like increases his deal by 40% or some outragous number. So, the Knicks just have to offer him a "fair" deal not the max. The shoe company pretty much foots the bill. (same for Chicago or LA)

Once the Knicks hired Larry Brown (who Lebron HATES from the Olympics) their chances of landing him were all but over then.

Lebron would never take less than the max. Its not all about the money, but no player of his calibre would ever take less than the max. Its beside the point anyways, the Knicks payroll for the 06/07 season is almost 50 mil already, so the only shot they will have is to pray that someone is stupid enough to take on Marbury's contract.

And if you seriously think Larry will stick it out more than two years in NY you are delusional.

I DON'T feel your pain because I hate the Knicks, BUT I think that hope isn't completely lost for you guys to sign someone like LeBron. If Houston really does retire in the next year or two, then Zeke would have made a great move and looked like a damn genius. Unbelievable but there's still a long-shot chance of that happening. I of course hope that he doesn't retire and that you guys stay handcuffed. Better yet, if this doesn't happen, I hope he stays as your GM for the next 20 years. hehe.

Here's the math behind James to the Knicks...

(with much help from http://hoopshype.com/salaries/new_york.htm)

The Knicks currently have about $45M in payroll committed for the 2008-9 season, when LBJ is likely to hit the market. The Cavs have a qualifying offer on him for 2007-8, which they will surely make, making him a restricted free agent. They will surely match any offer he signs, thus if he plans to leave Cleveland, he will sign the one year tender and become an unrestricted free agent after that.

If the Knicks renounce Channing Frye, Nate Robinson and David Lee, they can get down to $39 million. A max deal for James would have to start at about $11 million per year. So unless the salary cap comes in at $50 million or more, they can't offer him a max deal. That's a longshot, but it's possible.

However, all this assumes that the Knicks don't sign or trade for a single player with a contract that runs beyond 2008. The chances of that happening are between slim and none.

With the money he's now making.......he might!

No wonder Larry Bird fired Isiah in Indiana.....It seems like Isiah ruins everything he touches. Isiah Thomas bought the CBA in 1999 and ran it into the ground too:

Grand Rapids, Michigan, February 24, 2001 -- The Continental Basketball Association (CBA) filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, according to the Yakima (Michigan) Herald-Republic. The bankruptcy filing was done by Isiah Thomas' firm IT Acquisitions and comes as "several of the leagues' now former teams seek money for payroll, ticket holders, sponsors and the unpaid portion" of the $9 million dollars that Thomas acquired when he acquired the CBA in 1999.
