Ineffective Use of Taylor and Thomas

I'm starting to wonder why Capers and Saban insist on using Taylor and Thomas in ways that limit their effectiveness. Both Thomas and Taylor are still great players, but all players have certain weaknesses, and some of our defensive schemes seem to expose their weaknesses rather than cover them.

Zach is a read and react linebacker. Because of his determined study habits, quick reaction time, and sideline-to-sideline speed, Zach will make a lot of plays for a defense. However, he has always had problems covering bigger tight ends downfield, and he is not the most effective blitzer because of his size. I cringe everytime I see Zach blitz, because I know he is not going to get to the quarterback, and I know that usually leaves a receiver in the middle of the field running unchecked through the zone.

Taylor is constantly moved around on defensive front, and I think it is starting to hurt his performance. Pass rushers, like running backs or receivers, need to get into a rythm to be effective. Sometimes a certain move is calculated in the first quarter just to get an offensive lineman to bite on something later in the game. It's a constant one-on-one chess match. Taylor has lost a little of that by shuffling around the line.

I understand that Taylor and Thomas have new roles in the hybrid defense that Capers and Saban designed. However, I think their roles should be more limited to things they do well, and then the other elements can be added for surprise.

I like how we move JT around, and I dont think it is hurting him. However, we should never blitz Zach... he gets tossed like a rag doll...

JT was moved from side to side when Wanny was here also in order to get good matchups on offensive linemen, so I don't think that's a problem. In fact, I think the way they occasionally use him now in 3-4 alignments helps our defense as it keeps offenses guessing and often disrupts their plans. If anything, Taylor's back problems might be an issue.

As for Zach, I agree that he's just not getting to the QB anymore. He might be more effective if they blitz him less.

I agree.
I have heen saying this since the beginning of the season. JT should only come from the right DE he his best when he can pressure the LT all game how many time has that resulted in a holding or personal foul. ZT should play the mike with Big Daddy ,Traylor playing the tackle spots together protecting Zach.

Interesting....I didn't realize that JT was still suffering from back problems.

Man how Id like to see us stop blitzing so damn much... we rarely get there, no mater who we bring!
if we stop applying pressure on the QB teams will eat us alive.....but the front four should be good enough to do it, better disguised blitzes would be cool...IMO.

I agree. Miami's front four is more than enough to apply pressure. I do not know why the blitzing is not working, but it isn't. It was fairly effective last season, though, for some reason, teams are picking it up better this year. I'm in the same boat as everyone as far as Zach is concerned: DO NOT BLITZ ZACH!

So why is the blitz not working? From what I have seen, the schemes are running late, no disguises (as depac33 said), and the personnel do not fit the scheme. I'm only guessing, but is Saban so engulfed with his philosophies that he is not willing to change (Semper gumby anyone?) his strategies? I just do not get it....

You know I brought this point up in preseason and peeps thought I was stupid. We all know how complexed Saban's defensive schemes are, but if he doesn't have the right personel to run the schemes he should adapt to what he can do...

We should better disguise our blitz package, not run it so often and rely more on our front 4 to get pressure on the QB. Zach is NOT a good blitzer.

Our defense is pretty good. Top 5 if you filter the amount of total yards average per game. Except we give up an amazing 43% on 3rd...

I think is more a system problem.
If we blitz, the front 4 plus 1 LB, the problem I think, is that we are blitzing with no ADVANTAGE, like Pitt D do.

I mean, they blitz a lot with LB, CB, SS and the 3 front cover some short zone, they try to confused the Oline.

We do anything of that, we just rush with the front 4 plus 1 LB... Look at J Bell, he has some success blitizing because nobody expect him to blitz.

Anyway we have a terrible season...

I think the poor 3rd down numbers can be attributed to the failure to get pressure on the QB on 3rd downs. You're right, our defense is good, but they could be better. Ray Lewis was ill-fitted for the 3-4 scheme, and the Raven's adjusted. I think Zach is even more ill-fitted to the scheme...at least as a blitzer.

How many corner blitzes have we run this season? It seemed like the corner blitz was effective for us the last 2 seasons...much better than blitzing Zach. Still, Zach would be far more effective at blitzing if we disguised better and minimized the number of times we sent him.
