There are have been numerous threads about Joe Philbin lately and I tried not to pile on with my own thread. I made my thoughts know through my assessment pieces on Sunday and simple individual posts. However, after reading some of the coverage today regarding Joe Philbin's comments about Dallas Thomas, I could not hold back.
It is simple incredible that Dallas Thomas continues RT. True the injury to Branden Albert was crushing and the lack of a true swing OT has hurt the team. It was a position throughout the offseason that I did not think was filled sufficiently and unfortunately, I was right.
It is well known how much Dallas Thomas has struggled over the past four weeks at RT. What is funny is at this point I am not even blaming Thomas anymore. He is terrible and from his comments it is almost seems as if he knows it. I questioned whether he should be on the team coming out of camp.
The issue now lies at the feet of head coach Joe Philbin. The player has been beaten routinely whenever he has been given playing time. It does not matter the position. It is obvious to even the novice observer. However, Philbin and this staff continue to send him out to battle.
What got me fired up today was the following Tweet from Andrew Abramsome at Joe Philbin's presser...

Philbin on Dallas Thomas: Theres 50 some odd plays in the game. People focus on the bad ones. He's done some good things and against the run
Philbin's comment is insulting. "People focus on the bad ones"...seriously, coach? Bad ones such as four sacks...sacks that kill drives? sacks that knock the team back in the Red Zone? Missed blocks in the run game that produce negative plays? What should we be focused on, Coach? Currently, Dallas Thomas is the worst RT in football. Philbin comments that Thomas is strong in the run game...no he is not. He is a subpar run blocker as well.
One could say he is sticking up for his guy. That is fine and maybe he is. However, has he or anyone on that staff thought about how Philbin "standing by Thomas" is doing to his locker room? Tell me the others in that locker room do not want to see him try something else? Philbin should show the team that he is willing to do whatever it takes to make improvements in the hope of finding success. Instead, he gives insulting, false statements of how Thomas is actually doing okay on the field. It is another reason of many of why I think this team will quit on Philbin over the last few weeks of the season.
It is frustrating and mind boggling that another player on the roster such as Jason Fox or Billy Turner has not got a shot. Fox has experience in this league and was solid in his playing time against Denver at LT. Turner we have not seen since camp, but he is someone that seems to have a high upside. Though he might struggle early, I could see him improving week to week. I could even make the argument for a street free agent at this point based on Thomas' shabby play.
Some will make the argument that Bill Lazor or John Benton must be on board with this decision so that should make a fan feel better about Thomas at RT. Who knows what they think. I like the work Lazor and Benton have done this year. They are part of the solution not the problem. However, if they do in fact, support Thomas at RT, then they are dead wrong with this decision. Thomas is being asked to do something that he is simply not physically nor mentally capable of.
Joe Philbin is coaching for his head coaching life. Can you imagine the ramifications if he were to lose a game to close the season because of Thomas? Even worse, Ryan Tannehill is severely injured going into the offseason because Thomas is over his skis. If any of these occur, Philbin should exclusively be held responsible. In any event, Philbin should be attempting some type of adjustment in the attempt to rectify a dire situation. Instead, he gives us lip service of how we are focusing on the negative and not seeing what is actually happening on the field.
This situation at Right Tackle is a microcosm of Joe Philbin's disappointing tenure as head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
