Take it for what it is worth. I spoke with a buddy of mine that is a scout for the Patricias. He had a round table the other day with several other scouts about the top 3 DE that are projected to be OLB in a 3-4. He did not give me all the scouts that was involved but he did sat that 1 of them was a dolphins scout. The 3 was Brown/ English / and Michael Johnson from GT.

The consensus was English would project the best. That is a given. He is the most athletic and physical of this group. The disagreement came in between Brown and Johnson. Some scouts have labeled Grant with all the other great Florida State DE. Excellent in college but do not produce in NFL. He said that they all agree that he can get after the passer but question how physical and strong he is. Some scouts think he is just a DE and can not make the transition to OLB in a 3-4. Me personally I don’t like Brown at all. I don’t think he is special. I’ve been wrong before. The interesting thing for us Dolphin fans is what the dolphin scout felt. He informed that the Dolphin scout made it very clear that Miami has interest in seeing how Johnson performs. My buddy said that the scout believes that he could be the next Terrell Suggs. He has long arms great speed and motor and is athletic. When one of the scouts labeled him another Vernon Gholston the scout almost lost it. The scout told the group that MJ is clearly the second best DE projected OLB behind English and he went as far as saying that Miami feels that he could be the best as they are not that sure that English could work well in space.

Now the scout could be selling wolf tickets or he could have let his guard down. I’m not sure what goes on but my buddy gets the idea from this round table that the guy was telling the truth and was speaking with his heart.

I like Johnson. I don’t think he is better than English but I think he is special. I think he can transition to a OLB in a 3-4. Hey I’ve been wrong before.

Also my buddy had a one on one with this same scout. They where talking about WR. He said that make no mistake about it that Darrius Heyward Bay is clearly on Miami radar. This is not just with Miami either. The Pats have him as the 3rd best WR behind Maklin and Crabtree. Believe it or not the Patricias believe that Macklin is better then Crabtree not sure what they are smoking but hey it really doesn’t matter because neither will be there when they pick. When my buddy told this to the Dolphins scout he told my buddy that Miami feels that Heyward Bay is the second best WR in the draft. Not sure what our scouts are smoking either but hey take the info for what it is worth.

Sorry? Have I misunderstood, or are you implying that opposing scouts get around a table, during the combine and tell other teams' scouts exactly how they judge specific players?

NO they all sit in there own corners and hide there notes from all the other team personal that is there.

Why would a scout tip his hand as to what his team was looking for and why that player is so valuable? If it's true, it's a:

I'm going to assume your not being a wise guy and answer your question.
1. you want to compare how your evaluation is of the same player.
You think they sit around and watch and dont talk? I'll give you an example
lets say you and 31 other people was looking at a car. you may see something about this car that you dont other people to know. like there is a ding in the bumper. so you tell someone becasue that may keep him from wanting the car. But all along you know yoyu still want the car. There maybe things abiut the car that yhou don't want anyone else to realize. so you say nothing. You also may want to know what others think about the car just to see if you yourself have the right assesment of the car. If yhou think the car is worth 20k but everyone else thinks its worth 5k you may want to go back and revisit that car again to make sure your right. and vise versa. If you think the car is worth 5k and everyone else thinks its worth 20k then maybe the ding in the bumper is not as bad as you thougt so you go back and check the car out again.

Not sure if that answers your question.

By Grant do you mean Everette Brown?

Maybe that's because our previous regimes' drafts sucked: our scouts were misled by other teams' scouts.....hmmmm. Interesting. :chuckle:

Our old regimes scouts probably just took the patriots scouts word for it....would explain alot of the drafts we've had....BB was prolly laughing every draft day.....until last yr anyhow. Then he may have actually cried.

Not sure if that answers your question.

I was being serious. Staying with your analogy, I would damn sure not tell anyone anything positive about the car that I wanted because I wouldn't want anyone to come and buy it before me. Why on earth would you want to tip your hand to the opponent and let them grab your guy? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Anyone who has confidence in their own scouting isn't really going to care if another guy has someone you rated 3rd best rated as their 2nd. Just a difference of opinion. I don't think it's going to make the Pats change their minds on what they are going to do. It's not like he came out and said "We're taking Johnson at 25" and put that out their for everyone. They were just comparing opinions and ideas....seems fine to me.

Since your serious I'll go further.
I'm sure there are things that the guy did not tell my buddy. However there are things that will happen that will be clear as day. Like if the guy runs some crazy time in the l drill or he just runs like water thru the bags. Then you make your assesment on what that translate to. It's ok to share that with someone else. What you don't share is your plan. Like I we are going to target this guy but if he is gone we will do this. It's not secret who the top people are at every position. What is a secret is who is the top players on your board. For instance an All world QB could be the clear best player in the draft but If NE is picking 1st they would not take that player becasue of Brady. Who knows who they have ahead of this all world QB. Yet the QB is the best player in the draft and all their scouts was saying this the entire time. Maybe they take the qb and trade brady. Who knows.

EXACTLY :thanks:
This is one reason why I don't like posting. You have to explain a million and one things to people that have no clue.
