I see people flipping out each time Miami places someone on
IR so let me try to explain. When a player is injured from a
team activity, the team can not waive them injured. So you
have to place them on IR, even if it's a one week injury, you
can not waive them injured. Then you can either try to
negotiate a injury settlement (each side says what they
think the time frame for the injury will be to heal) or you
leave them on IR until they are cleared by a Doc and waive them.

Thank you SGT. Obvious. That's not the point. Who thought DT was getting waived, or Turk, or any of the others.

What are the guidelines for returning a player to active status from injured reserve?

a player is automatically returned to active status after the Super Bowl is over

thanks for the info. The problem i have is that we are essentially waiving Turk (through the method you explained above) when it seems he would only miss one or two games at most. This seems to be much the same with Derrius Thompson.

This just tells me that Saban wasn't that high on Turk to begin with and that he sees more value in having Jones on the roster than having to hold a roster spot for an injured Turk and wait for him to get healthy again...Again, much like the Derrius Thompson situation.

I'm not saying that I agree or disagree (I didn't care much for DT), I'm not the coach and I don't see these guys at practice. But from all that I know, Turk was pretty good for us, consistent, and when he wasn't with us and we had Mark Royals punting, we really missed him.

Saban seems to be using the IR as an extended bench, giving him time to negotiate injury settlements. This is not the intent of IR, but I guess ther eare no rules against using it that way. I thought that a player had to have a sever injury to be put on IR, but I guess that is not the case.

Berlin for practice squad.

nope, because Gruden was going to do it with Brackins. Larry had a strained hamstring or groin, nothing serious at all, but john didnt want to lose him. According the the board on the official site, and some guys at pewterreport.com, Gru was going to put Brackins on IR just because he didnt want to lose him in waivers
