Insert Chris Long into the draft 2 years ago.

1) Mario Williams
2) Reggie Bush
3) Vince Young

We're considering him as the #1 overall pick.

Where does he go in that draft?

Probably 8th to the the Bills. Its a hard call though since they went Whitner. I dont think they would have passed on Long but who knows. The furthest he wouldve dropped is 13th to the Browns who took Wimbley.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but we cant do that ... all we can do is draft the best available and best player in this year's draft for our system.

Charlie Casserly, who was at Long's pro day, talking about the possibility of him going number 1. Paul Bermister said something along the lines of "You saw enough in Mario Williams to take him number 1. Did Long show enough to prove he is number 1?" Casserly said he felt he did. He said he thinks he can be a great pass rusher and said his use of his hands were very impressive. He then said he has "Payton Manning-like character and work ethic." Pretty high praise from a guy like Casserly.

So the man that took Williams may have taken Long!;)

Gee, I don't think he would have been drafted at all. He was a sophomore.;)

Pfft, easy question. I've got a real noodle bender for you - insert Chris Long into the 1981 draft - who goes first, him or Howie? Answer that one Carnac :p

Thanks! This is helpful info.

I'd take Mario Williams number 1 in this draft, no question. He'd be a dirty DE in a 3-4.

Long looks like he's got great mobility at his size, and despite the fact that I am a Jake Long fan, I don't know how pissed I'd be with Chris at this point.

He seems much more athletic than Gholston from the waist down.

As well, Matt Ryan threw 19 picks last year. I know that was because his receivers suck, but c'mon, so do ours.

I feel I'll be on the Chris Long bandwagon very soon.

That Casserly insight is great. If he thinks he's worthy of #1 I'm sold. He put his balls on the table choosing Mario Williams at #1 and got fired for it, but Mario was NASTY last year.

Ok so where would Jake Long go in that Draft?

Insert Matt Ryan into the 2004 draft, where does he go? He wouldnt be a top 10 pick.

Insert Jake Long into last years draft, and he goes #5 to Arizona.

Whats the point of this thread? Every team picking has different needs. The best player in the draft doesnt always go #1 overall.

It would be a tough call. Mario Williams and Chris Long would have gotten locked into a dead heat with each other for top DE status. It would have been similar to the current Chris Long/Vernon Gholston debate. Williams' sacks came in bunches, against small time players. He's a lot bigger than Chris Long, though...not faster, but probably more athletic when you account for the size difference. Reggie Bush and Darren McFadden are similar creatures, so if Chris Long can successfully dust McFadden (especially after the success of Adrian Peterson) then there's no reason to think Long couldn't have dusted Bush as well in that draft. Vince Young is a real question mark. That's a quarterback, and the rules never seem to apply normally to them. If a team needs one and they're picking high they'll pick the QB just out of pure need.

I'm not sure that this is such a loaded question as much as it is an interesting thought experiment. So I'll run with it.

If Long, Long, Ryan, and Gholston were in the 2006 draft, here's how I think it would have played out:

1. Mario W - Texans
2. Reggie Bush - Saints
3. Vince Young - Tenn
4. D'Bustashaw - Jets
5. Green Bay - Chris Long
6. 49ers - Jake Long
7. Oakland - Gholston
8. Buffalo - AJ Hawk
9. Detroit - Ernie Sims
10. AZ - Leinart

But 2006 was a really deep draft. How about 2005, which was a weak draft class:

1. Alex Smith - San Fran
2. Matt Ryan - Miami
3. Braylon Edwards - Cleveland
4. Ronnie Brown - Chicago
5. Chris Long - Tampa
6. Pacman - Titans
7. Jake Long - Minnesota
8. Gholston - Arizona
9. Antrel Rolle - Redskins
10. Mike Williams - Detroit

Of course, this experiment should only be done evaluating the players as prospects, not as how they panned out in the NFL. At least, that's what I did.

And then the alarm clock rang  Long definitely has great hand technique, its at a pro level but its also why someone like Derrick Harvey may be a much better prospect. Harvey doesnt have a clue what to do with his hands yet he still produces at a comparable level. The upside of Gholston or Harvey is superior to that of Long. Lets not even mention Mario. Also, as a side note, Casserly also thinks Ryan is a number 1

I think it's time for an excedrin...WOW! So many players...so many options...whats a poor fan to do?
