Take this for what it is worth. Talking with some media buddies of mine, I was introduced to a couple of guys who I had never met. We were having a good time hanging out when one of these new guys ( call him Sven) begins talking about he was hoping his spring would be less of a headache than last year with the team doing so well during the season. I was a bit slow on the uptake since several of us were talking high school recruits for tomorrows big day.
After a few minutes I realized Sven was talking about the Dolphins. I sat and listened with Sven not knowing my interest in Miami and what he laid out regarding last year opened my eyes to things that make allot of sense.
This guy is not a reporter, but "gathers" data for the media. In any case what I garnered from his conversation was that the QB issue last spring literally had Parcell's teeth itching.
Myths about last year:
1. Beck was on the short leash to getting dropped
Truth: Beck was in no way close to getting dropped, the coaches were excited by his prospects. Henne was literally an opportunistic solidifying pick, not a replacement. However it according to Sven came to a head when early on the coaches noticed that Beck did not have control of the team in the huddle. The players were taking plays off in practice when he was under center, the consensus was they wanted the new not the old and Beck regardless of his efforts was not popular with the guys due to last years performance. Fair or not, many of them especially the new blood were not supportive.
His performance in practice early on had the staff in a fit. The Dropped passes in droves, lazy route running, poor snaps and botched line assignments, happen, but early on they were happening enough when Beck was in that several meetings were held to discuss what the problems were. Henne was to progress slower, but the players made it clear that they would rather go with the new guy.
Once CP was picked up, practice demeanor changed. The team was given clear understanding that the veteran would be the starter. After that the players didn't care about numbers two or three and it was at that point when Beck's practice performances took a big leap forward.
Sven explained how edgy things were around practice until the latter part leading into the preseason.
He also shared some info that Parcells actually didn't want to trade Beck and wanted to keep him in the organization, The investment of off season practice the coaches put into Beck was to get him a new start and get him into the new system. Bill however had to to deal with Beck as a liability due to keeping the team in synch. Sven found out that Parcells and company have been offered several deals for Beck, but the trades would not improve the Dolphins team (wrong positions being offered).
Beck will be leaving the Dolphins, soon for the right trade, but not because he sucks, or doesn't cut it as a Pro. It is basically a situation of him being the guy with no prom date. Sven is not sure how things will be this year during practice, but last year was pretty rough when trying to pick up tidbits for the media.
