Rewind to New Year’s Day. On that cold and windy afternoon at Lambeau Field, Matt Flynn’s second NFL start produced 480 passing yards and six touchdowns, the final one with 1:10 left in the fourth quarter. It was the winning score in a 45-41 shootout with the Detroit Lions.
After the game, all we heard was how Flynn had just made himself a lot of money as a prospective free agent. He had started two games, one against New England in 2010, and this record-setting performance on the 2011 season’s final Sunday. We all knew the line of reasoning: the NFL is a quarterback-driven league, there’s a scarcity of quality starting quarterbacks, Flynn has been tutored by one of the league’s best quarterback coaches in Mike McCarthy, and he played well each time he got his opportunity.

This tells me he's not worth any crazy amount of FA money. It also begs the question in all honesty how much, if at all, is Flynn more talented than say Matt Moore or any FA Qb? Because from the article it would seem he brings almost nothing special talent-wise to the table.

Reading the article, Flynn is a limited QB.

When a QB own skill limit what the offense can do, the offense is self-defeating.

That what i got from the article as well. It makes you think perhaps your better off keeping what you got (M.Moore) and spend the money somewhere else.

Flynn but not be as great as some people think, Manning might never be the same and we can't get Luck or the 3rd so it could be Moore all over again to start the season. Pretty sure they will draft a QB early tho.

I think there is a great chance that Matt Flynn will be very productive in this offense. There is no reason to think that he will not be at least another Matt Schaub, who is also not a very physically gifted quarterback.

What this article points out is the fact that the system the quarterback plays in has just as much of an effect, if not more on his play than his overall talent level does.

If what you guys are looking for is a big, physical, strong armed passer that makes great decisions and is mobile, then you are going to be looking for quite a long time.

Joe Montana is a perfect example of why physical skills aren't the end all be all that some of you make them out to be. Montana was great in Walsh's offense. Put him in Coryell's offense, and he's not nearly as good as he was in Walsh's offense. Steve Young was a bust in Tampa Bay. He was a hall of famer in San Francisco. Rich Gannon was MVP of the league in Oakland. Matt Hasselbeck was effective in Seattle. Jeff Garcia in San Francisco. Matt Schaub in Houston. Jake Plummer in Denver. The list goes on and on with quarterbacks who aren't physically gifted that have produced well in this style of offense.

Those are all good points, but they also lead to why I'm all over Brandon Weeden. The guy is a special talent with that big albatross hanging around his neck, the age issue. And despite that, he's imo at worst a high second round pick. We'll be lucky if we have a shot at him with our 2nd rd pick as things stand now.
