With all the debate about Matt Ryan, many are using his int totals as a basis for argument that he won't be a franchise QB. Dan Marino had 23 ints his senior year. Charles Davis of NFL network dug out that stat.

Now I'm not saying we should or shouldn't draft Matt Ryan. Nor am I saying I don't want Beck to get his shot.

Just something to chew on.

Edit: I'm speaking of his senior year in college @ Pitt.

Dan Marino was also an older guy with bad ankles at that point.........Lets not compare Marino INT`s to Ryan...Marino was a leader..a cannon arm..good head on his shoulders..no run support..an average defense at best...Marino had high INT`s..so didn`t Favre, the record holder...would you kick either to the curb?? Intangibles wins games..

I believe he's pointing out college stats not career.

That is so weird. I never actually looked at Marino's college stats. He had 17 TDs to 23 ints! Jesus! If that were to happen today he would slip in to the 3rd or 4th round.

You just never know who the stud is going to be. Matt Ryan could be that guy. We just don't know.

GREAT post!

I am against a QB #1 BUT it's obvious alot goes into being an excellent pro and INT stats in college dont always tell the story.

I checked a few sites because I didnt believe the stats at first but the ones I checked were all the same... Def did not have a good senior season, but as far as stats in the 80's go, they might be good. God knows its a much different game and much easier to pass now than it was then with all the rules and regulations. Especially by NFL standards.

That's a very good point that has to be factored in to the evaluation process. The rule was you could have your hands on the receiver all the way until the ball was in the air.

But even saying that, I still think the high number of ints in Ryan's case have more do with the lack of talent around him and forcing the ball ( Favre like) into tight windows.

That just shows you the difference in how much media (fluff media I might add) we now have to listen to. Unfortunately to many people take their OPINIONS as fact and start silly arguements about what player is better. J.Flacco is a classic example of media hyping a guy up after the college season ended ( I don't mean he won't end up good or great, just where was the hype on game day ). R.Moss and W.Sapp are good examples how it works in reverse as well.

Great find on this stat. I know the interception total is worrisome for most fans but we are still talking about the guy with the best physical tools and who got the most out of his team.

We will not invest that kind of money in a QB, especially when we just picked Beck in the 2nd last year. Everybody knows Parcells always goes Defense with the first pick. I think when we signed Mcwhat ever his name is, that was in indication that we will not be selecting Ryan. Beck and Mcown will battle for the starting job, and we will go defense with the first pick. JMO.

One thing I'm sure still stood out about Dan then was the fire in the belly, the unbelievable quick release, the cannon and his accurate throws. Ints often can be from lack of talent w WR's or your defense sucks enough that your forcing to make big plays. I'm sure it was also the fact Miami selected in the later part of the 1st round when it's easy to take chances on players you believe in.

Two things. #1- Parcells is not the GM nor HC. #2- I think the McCown signing is for veteran stability at the QB position in case all goes to hell.

Remember what the Chargers did in 2004? They had invested a 2nd rounder in Drew Brees in 2002 I beleive and drafted Phillip Rivers #2 overall a few years later. The QB position is way to important to leave in the hands of Josh McCown.

Now, having said that. I'm still am not sold on Ryan as the #1 pick and I'm not on his bandwagon. I'd be pretty happy with several players at the #1 spot.:)

That's why he dropped along with the smoking weed rumors and being drafted in baseball.
