Intro to Liam Eichenberg OT: RD2b

We still have the 49ers 3rd round pick next year. We made it out of the draft with Waddle and Eichenberg, essentially swapped 1st and 3rd round picks with the 49ers in 2022 and got their 2023 1st round pick. For those complaining we used what amounted to house money to make the trades with the Eagles and the Giants. Still came out ahead IMO as well.

So Hunt to the inside? Or this dude project as a guard?
Hunt is a natural guard and lacked the quickness laterally or experience to pass protect. Eichenberg is a natural RT who has good seal blocks and finds his man downfield very well. In pass pro he is the consummate technician at OT much like Zack Martin (also from Notre Dame) iss as a OG. Great fundamentals, always in the right position, excellent footwork despite not being a super-athlete, picks up stunts very well and is extremely assignment sound.

Most people don't realize that OL win 90% of their encounters ... even the bad ones win most of the time. While elite athletic traits allow the highlight plays for offensive skill positions and for most spots on defense, it is actually consistency and technical soundness that makes for the best OL. Sure, one with extra long arms, phenomenal power, and Laremy Tunsil awesome lateral quickness is always wanted ... it's not going to make anyone more consistent. An OL who allows 1 sack and has 1 offsides penalty a game every game becomes the worst OL in the league. That's allowing 16 sacks and causing 16 penalties a year! The anonymous OL who never gets beaten fades into the background and the guy who never causes an offsides or holding penalty is almost never acknowledged for helping his team ... but it is exactly what his team needs to succeed. Liam Eichenberg is that sort of guy. Consistently good, and that's enough to win 100% of his pass reps for the last two years. It's enough to spring lots of long runs for his RB's, it's enough to dominate his position.

But when the combine comes around and his athletic numbers don't pop ... very few fans are excited to hear his name called. Just how this game works.

I think the jags wanted Eich and that prompted us to jump them

Eichenberg's pro shuttle and three-cone numbers ranked fourth among all first-round offensive tackles going all the way back to the 2016 NFL Draft. That includes being better than all six of the first round tackles from the 2020 NFL Draft. His numbers blew away those posted by Ronnie Stanley during his Pro Day.
So why did they say he was too slow footed to keep up with edge r

awesome thanks for the breakdown. I didn’t think Hunt was that bad last year so if this guy is better and hunt can kick in that’s great. Just need a C in the third
