Intro to Robert Hunt OG: RD 2

I will give you the one and only stat that matters. Wins and losses. I feel pretty good about principles but doesn’t matter what we think. Will Fitzpatrick continue on his path? Will Wilkins? History tells us that Pittsburgh has a pretty good record on development and winning and we don’t. As of now that is all we have.
Hey Flores showed me something last yr but what Tomlin did? Amazing, no QB, lost Brown, 2nd and 3rd string RB’s I mean no offense. We should have gotten a top 10 pick from them.

So what do W/L tell you about Marino, Wake, and Pouncey?

I like what I see from him. Wish he played against better talent. Glad we went OL early because we have sucked at finding OL in thr later rounds

Two comments.
Already mentioned 'success' in a draft. MF was a 'success' because of a few games in PIT. Will that continue? remains to be seen. Wilkins? Well, he's not All-Pro, thus, he was a bad pick. P-dub had success just as MF did, but he's hurt. Flo should have known that. Far too much opinion and hindsight goes into evaluating success.

WADR, I'm not sure how this relates to my post or point.

Second is your comment "as long as it is backed up with tape/stats." I disagree, again, because of opinion. Consider current draft picks - Hunt, Jackson, davis, all of them. Both sides use the same tape and stats to 'prove' their point. Slow feet, fast feet. Good size v. 40 time. Good stats, but look at competition, Sometimes it sems people like or dislike a pick and, not surprisingly, the tape/stats they see 'prove' they're right.

My point with saying what you quoted was that its ok to not like a player based on real info, but its not ok if you're basing it on some pundit's draft board or if you hadn't heard of them. For example, if you don't like Hunt pick because of actual research into the player's tape and stats, etc. then we may disagree but at least the opinion is valid. If you don't like him, because we picked where we did and hair gel Mel had him slotted further away, then that isn't valid.

Like the 2nd round run on RB’s? An area of need. You remember we brought in every top tier back for interviews. I think you would agree that is a good indicator of need. That and the best RB we had is a journey man with no explosion. But at no time did we use capital to move up. Hard for me to believe they spent all that time and energy to think a #56 pick was going to get one of these guys.
My draft mantra is BPA and VBD. But when you see a run at position of need you may want to pull some of those 14 picks out of your *** and use them. Pretty simple logic really. I could have had Dobbins with 56 and a ham sandwich. I take that over Brieda and yes I think we can still get Davis later.
How many players in how many picks constitutes a run?
Did every other position have a run?
If not, are there runs every year of the same positions at the same places?

If your answers are affirmative, then please show your work.

I keep hoping to see Jamie Nails incarnate to show up on our OL.

It was fun watching him personally escort Ricky down the field.

Dude's rebirth here had him on a great course and then.... that injury killed a great story line he had going with us

Your looking at top quality guard. Maybe can play right tackle. Your looking at the new leader of this offensive line. He will be the enforcer that makes sure everyone is kicking you know what in practice or games.

Yes you’re right. If he works out at RT then my view of the slot/position value does increase. The projection is difficult for me bc you couldn’t see him against or next to higher competition at the Senior Bowl or Combine. Casual fans like me don’t have access to what teams do....or time. On tape I see a really good nasty guard with good movement skills but not great....and some trouble with bending/balance. Not a knock on him at all bc Scherff and Martin were the same coming in and drafted much higher....you can even put Flowers in that category. The upside is there with this kid.

I love the Tua pick and want to build an offense around him like KC with as many good OL and high level toys as I can.

The biggest fault I have complained about the Fins over the last decade was no real commitment to improve the OL as a whole. Yeah, they would draft a Pouncey then a James and even Long and Tunsil. But IMO the best guards and overall value at OL happens in the second round. And they never used a 2nd on one that I recall. I love seeing 3 fairly high picks on thre OL in one draft. Plus they brought in a couple pretty solid FAs. Whether they can develop these guys into a good too great OL remains to be seen. But at least finally they have multiple players to choose from. Remember them always needing interior guys? Seems like every year for the last decade or more. Now the top guys they could put on the interior 3 spots include, Flowers, Karras, Davis, Kindley and Hunt. That's 5 pretty good choices with either Hunt or Davis likely being the RT. I'm guessing Flores wants to keep the interior of the pocket clean for Tua. And with these investments, I think it will happen sooner than later. Overall, I think Miami improved more than any other team in the NFL talent wise. And it's not even close. I'm seeing at least 4 or 5 starters this season from the draft and maybe 7 or more long term. And some of that is because I have faith that Flores and his staff will repeat last season and really develop their young guys.

I think the strategy also includes the coach's vision of the team. We got a great glimpse into what Flores is building with this draft. He wants to stuff the run on defense and pound the rock on offense. That's why most of the investment went to run blockers and run stuffers in the draft. I'm guessing Flores really really likes Howard at RB as a power back 1st and 2nd down. They have Baird already for 3rd down and wanted to upgrade that position. I don't think you use a top 3 round pick on a RB that you don't plan to play 3 downs. Getting Breida with a 5th is pretty good value if he stays healthy. And if you have a great run blocking OL, almost any RB will be successful.

He has a body like keith sims

I heard they tried to move up in the 2nd for swift but couldn't find any takers

Can’t say I agree with that scherf and Martin assessment. They both had much better feet and zach Martin had much better technique.

scherf had a little more maul than technique in him and hunt definitely has a bit of a maul feel but hes a finisher on tape. Albeit vs less than ideal competition.

both scherf and Martin were much better movers to the 2nd level than hunt.

athletically this seems like no competition

It was poorly worded - just read it back to myself and had to do it twice to understand that the hell i was writing. I meant it wasn't a knock on him bc those guys were elite tackles in college but lacked something that made them better suited to kick inside to guard, and are still elite. If that's what he is i'll be ecstatic......i just don't see RT at all.

As for Flowers, he's what i want to avoid. The Giants should have moved him inside a long time ago. I don't want the Dolphins forcing this kid at RT just bc they drafted him as such, stunting his development/confidence and hurting 2 positions instead of just one.

This is a very nasty O-linemen.

They interviewed him, and a reporter asked him about how on many of his blocks, he likes to explode on the defensive player, and throw them to the ground. His answer was while smiling, that it's fun to dominate and pound them to the ground.

It send chills that this dude is not playing around, and if I was a defensive linemen, I would be asking " You want me to go against this psycho?"

Richie Incognito may be a pacifist compared to this dude. Lol

I think this nastiness can also help him in his pass pro. Imagine having this 330 lb. Behemoth crushing you in the run game all day. How good will your pass rush be late in the game when they need a sack? ?

Hunt gives Miami guard/tackle versatility. Road-grader with brute strength and solid movement skills. Susceptible to counters at times but can recovery. Smart for Dolphins to build the offensive line. (Chris Trapasso)

I think there is room on that frame to add 10-15 more pounds of corn solid pick
