Agents typically rely on the contracts of players drafted above and below their clients to help set the parameters for a deal in terms of salary, bonus, and term.

With the NFL’s labor situation on the brink of potential chaos, agents could be posturing for terms that will best serve their clients should the rules of the game be turned on their proverbial ear. Remember that, in May of 2008, owners decided to opt out of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. This would mean that the 2010 season would not have a salary cap limit and that a work stoppage in 2011 would be imminent unless a new agreement is reached beforehand.

Therefore, long term deals are not necessarily in a rookie’s best interest at the present time. Teams, on the other hand, would like to avoid doing short term rookie deals as they could have adverse consequences down the road. These two positions are not easily reconciled.

I would disagree with one minor, fairly trivial point:
"Both he (Smith) and Davis got some snaps with the first team defense during the OTAs, which indicates that they feel good about where Smith is relative to Davis."

I don't think that his taking some first-team snaps in itself indicates how they feel about Smith.

A refreshingly well-written article.

Every pick is at risk of a holdout until they are signed thats just the facts. Generally IMO it is the signing bonus up front that is the sticking point. The more they get the better for them it is guarenteed money and reduces the chance of those guys getting cut. Really for rookies especially it should all be annual salaries no bonus money. Only veterans get that as free agents. Teams get strapped with under performing rookies every year whom have never played a NFL snap. Rediculous. Just because you get picked in the 1st round means you belong in the NFL. The agents have gone overboard in this area. Cap the signing bonuses to a certain figure in each round and every guy gets an annual salary according to where they were picked with a little varience with the position that they play. Bottom line a team should be able to cut any player who is underforming without worrying about the financial hit they are going to take the next year.

Vontae is a risk Pat white is a Risk and Chris Clemons is a risk for a holdout

Of those 3, I would realistically say that Clemons is the one with the most chances though. If he hasnt signed by now, then I dont know what he's waiting for

Vontae would be smart to sign before Sunday Practice, you dont want to give SS any leg up on the competion.

Clemons, if he doesnt make it by sunday, he will be in the **** house.

Pat White- I heard should be inked soon, but he needs as much rep in practice as he can.

Granted, no one has held out yet. However, if Clemmons holds out I would have to question his thinking. Make your bones and then get a sweetheart deal in 3-4 years.

As for Davis and White it would depend how long they hold out. The longer they do the less impact they will have this season. For now, I'm taking the the position that there is nothing to worry about until there is something to worry about.

Well with Michael Oher (23rd) signing with the Ravens today, Vontae could sign fairly soon.

Davis holds out and he loses his possible starting spot to Smith with Eric Green playing the third corner....His loss but I bet he signs by camp.

I agree... Although I dont know abut Green, he might not even make the team.. I see Smith starting over Davis, especially if the season started today

Clay Matthews just signed so it should be alot easier for the Fins to sign Davis.

Lotta late 1st rounders signing deals today is a good thing. Clay Matthews (26th) just signed with the Packers. Had to know he was gonna take a pay cut coming from USC, just didn't know how much.

The agent for first-round pick Peria Jerry anticipates his client reaching a deal with the Falcons later today.

Jerry, the No. 22 overall pick, would become the seventh first-rounder to sign. Falcons training camp opens Saturday. Jerry will likely get a five-year deal.

More good news seems like the Dolphins should have no problem with guys like Matthews and Jerry signing. They should have just the right numbers to Davis contract in no time.

Davis would be dumb to hold out at camp because as of right now Smith already has a leg up on him. If he sits out it only means that Smith is going to lock up the starter job and learn the system that much better than Davis will. In reality he would just be hurting his chances at starting and playing this year if he holds out.
