Is free safety a concern to you?

I think Clemons was good last year but I see him more as a SS than a FS. The guy can fly around the field, and really good tackler. Clemons has a thing for being in the right place at the right time but never seems to be able to make the play, and the one time he does, its taken away from him by the refs.

He definitely lacks the ball skills/playmaking ability to be ever considered an elite FS . . . but I think the coverage skills are there. I also don't rate his tackling skills as high as you do, he definitely can't hold Yeremiah Bell's jock strap in that regard. I think he is in the right position, he can be a starter in the NFL with his size/speed/coverage combo. He will just never be an Ed Reed type with what I have seen. Reports said he was playing with a nagging leg injury all year and he still improved vastly from year 1 to year 2 . . . I'm holding out hope for him to take another step this year.

I'll tell you something..... All reports of trainning camps say something good each day about a guy we drafted (Jimmy Wilson), last time I checked he was playing FS position and I have this feeling he could be the real steal of this draft!!!!! If he continues this amazing trend of INT and deflected passes I think by mid season we could have an outstanding secondary with Davis, Smith, Allen, Carroll, Bell, Jones and Wilson.

Wilson is playing SS, Reshad Jones is playing FS.

I was looking over some stats from last year and some things stuck out at me. Two teams that I never thought Miami would lose to when the schedule came out was Cleveland and Detroit. Ben Watson - 10 catches for 100 yards and a td, Pettigrew 4-74 yards and a touchdown. Not to mention what other teams have done to us. However Sparano and Ireland seem to be okay with who we have now.

I think we will have a great defense this year however the free safety position is the weak link on this defense. If we go with the same lineup as last year then we will be in serious trouble! Just curious what other fans think.

QB is a concern for me

I think the issue could possibly have been LB coverage on those TE's.......Not FS. Normally the FS would be helping over the top on folks like Calvin Johnson, right?

I agree that Bell is a much better tackler by far, but I still think Clemons is a good tackler. He had 61 total tackles in his first year starting. I don't think their is a reason why Clemons shouldn't be able to move to SS, Jones to FS every once in awhile to give Bell a breather, or even play 3 safties and have Bell cheat up into the LOLB position on 3rd down plays or blitz to make him more around the line which I think hes better at doing anyways.

We had the opportunity to upgrade at receiver, tight end, guard, runningback, and safety and we did none of the above. I'm not saying we had the cap room to get better at all of those positions, the problem is that outsode of MAYBE runningback, we got better at NONE of those positions. Mark Columbo and Reggie Bush are real upgrades over what we had at those positions last year??? Really?
Wer'e relying on rookies to give us significant improvements at big time positions of need which almost never happens. I mean i like Pouncey nd Thomas but are they going to be pro bowlers from day 1, hell no. Same thing for Gates to an even greater extent because of the conference he played in.
Piss poor job across the board, no real improvement outside of Burnett.

RB we drafted a RB in the 2nd that we plan to make our feature back. Apparantly he is already impressing. This 2 back system is not a sure thing anymore and isn't what all teams need. Maybe Miami has decided to go to a feature back with a situational guy like Bush. With that said Bush in himself is an upgrade as WR as well. He can line up at anytime at WR. We wanna run a fast spread offense. Bradshaw is not that guy. Bush is that guy or sproles. We chose Bush.

WR and TE are not an issue. TE maybe but not an immediate need. We drafted the best interior lineman in the draft as well as picked up quality depth on the O-line. We also moved Carey inside.

FS no need to upgrade once again, especially not when you have 2 young guys that are only getting better and still playing respectably.

Like I said, it appears that we just didn't upgrade with the named players people wanted. Take Bush for instance, I remember him being a big target by many on this board until they found out Bradshaw was an option. Now, all of a sudden " what is this FO doing?" Well, they went after the guy a huge portion of fans wanted until the Bradshaw talk came up.

These positions you wanted to upgrade on would have killed the cap. No point in that. We were a team that had alot of holes to fill and this FO did a good job this offseason plugging in those holes.

We have a deeper team and have filled holes, made a top 6 defense stronger, improved our overall offense as well. That to me is upgrading. We don;t need guys like Bradsahw/Edwards/Holmes etc..... They would be nice, absolutely but we don't need him.

Who did you want us to pick up at FS or G that is better then Carey/Incognito and Jones/Clemmons?

In this case I think you are right. Though I don't know the coverages that were called. But it appeared as Crowder was a weak link in that area and we went and got Burnett to upgrade our covering skills in the LB'ER area

Lack of a ball-hawking FS is the weakest point on our defense.

Lack of INTs in general is the weakest point of our defense. I think we had 34 dropped INTs last year. We were ranked #6 overall in defense last year but that was in yards given up. Imagine just how much less we would have given up and how many more opportunities we could have created for the offense had we capitalized on those turnover opportunities. We could have won 3 or 4 more games...we definitely would have beat the Jets the first game...dropped 3 INTs in that game alone.

I'm not worried about FS. Between the various young guys we have, I think someone will step up.

I love arguing with you unrelenting homers. Let me ask you a question, if we have no needs at these positions where we are OBVIOUSLY mediocre or totally unproven, then why the hell are we 0-6 in the final 3 games of each of the last 2 seasons, with a 7-9 record???? It was ALLLL Chad Henne or Henning's fault, right??? BS we have needs everywhere (particularly at OL QB WR & TE) you refuse to admit it - but thats why we have continuous mediocrity.

Who did I want us to pick up? Um Robert Gallery, davin joseph, zach Miller, james jones, kyle orton and daniel manning would have all been upgrades over what we have obviously. I'm not saying we could have signed ALL of those guys but certainly 1 or 2 of them wouldve been nice!

Chris Clemens was at the bottom in several statistical categories and is a soft tackler. It shouldn't be hard for Rashad Jones to take his spot. Jones is a far superior tackler and reacts to the ball much better. We should be fine with him.
