Interesting question. IF Philbin does not win this year, there is speculation among many that he will be replaced. It's a very legit point of view, as he will have had 3 years to prove himself, and make the team better.

On the other hand, this is Hickey's first year, and unless the draft is great or horrible, we will not be able to evaluate what he has done. Does tis buy him more time, regardless of Philbin, or is this year Do or Die for him as well?

Some of the people here seem to think he is not on a hot seat for some reason so get ready for that debate.

But yes hickey is tied to philbin

I doubt either are really on any hot seat for this year.

If we finish this season in a way similar to the way we finished last season, Philbin is toast. But I don't see any scenario where Hickey only gets one year.

So if we're a competative team that barely misses the playoffs, we're hitting reset?

Yes that would male 3 years in a row.

How often can you be on the cusp before you give up. We have been on the cusp for the past decade. Time to get over that hump or move on

I think Ross would give Philbin a little more time than one year to work with what Hickey gives him as far as talent. But, I do understand the three year thought. I just dont think you only give Hickey one season to show something. So to me...they should be given a couple years to work with each other. One and done (for hickey) would be idiotic.

Philbin and/or Hickey have nothing to do with the past decade. Philbin only has to be accountable for the past two years. And if you dont give a new regime time to 'get over the hump', then you never will. If you hit reset every year or every other year, you will never improve. It will be an endless cycle of rinse and repeating coaches/GMs. I dont want that.

I don't think they are "tied" together at all; however, both could be toast. Hickey made some big reaches in the draft and didn't trade when he may have been able to. If this draft class is as big a flop as Ireland's last draft, I could see him going. For Philbin, if this draft class is decent at all and we fail as bad as last year...show him the door.

5000 vcash says Philbin will still be the Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2015.

The question that could come into play is that IF Philbin is replaced, will Hickey be the one to the best available coach or, will it take a complete house cleaning? We lost our top GM choices, and many believe that was because of having to retain Philbin. Could the same hold true for a new HC?

In my opinion Hickey's leash is a little shorter than your typical GM hire and Philbin's leash is a little longer than most fans would like so they are loosely tied at the hip but nothing is set in stone. If they fail I would say Ross' ideal scenario would be to clean house after next season (Tannehill included).

I cannot bet against myself in hoping that Philbin makes this year work. think about a potential change. More new guys wanting their guys, as opposed to what we have. Let's go to the extreme with a new guy wanting a 3-4 D, and a power blocking scheme.

This is one of the reasons I believe neither are in the hot seat unless we the season is just a disaster. I think you give the two some time to work together to right the ship (not just one season). I think when it's time to get rid of one or the other, you need to get rid of both this time. But you're not going to get a lot of prospects at GM/Coach if they those prospects see that we're canning people after one season for no other reason than having to fire the coach.
