Is it time to go get a Center?

I just don't get why they can't realize that even if dieter is just ok... he would most likely play better with people on each side who are strong and can help out more when needed rather than putting someone in who's never played the position.

I'm willing to bet Deiter would be much better with a strong LG and RG next to him

No coincidence that our line hasn't ranked better than 28th since 2014. (going by PFF rankings). 2014 was the year Pouncey had hip surgery and played guard.

IMO center is the 2nd most important position on that line right behind blind side tackle. We need to address that position one way or another between now and next season. (Draft/FA/Trade)

PFF Rankings

2014: 32nd

2015: 31st

2016: 30th

2017: 29th

2018: 31st

2019: 32nd

2020: 28th

2021: 29th
We had a lock on lousy OL play.
Based on that, would you be willing to re-evaluate how well Tannehill played? - LOL

Let the "but's" begin - LOL

100% yes. I am concerned with this line. The minute Armstead goes down we are doomed. That and the fact he's not a true center and the cowboys knew that right away... and we try and keep him there???? That is my only gripe so far this year. Everything else seems really good so far.
A thousand "ah-shits" is not cancelled by one "at-ta-boy" - LOL

Why is he being used at Center?

That answer probably leads to:

Why wasn't a C found in FA?

That probably leads to why wasn't one drafted?

Could have used a Center over another WR/QB in the draft.

This might be the most frustrating year in that Miami may finally have a good offense but inconsistent because of the OL yet again.
The very definition of "circular reasoning"

Especially bad when your first premise is RONG!
Like flushing a toilet. - LOL

I am concerned with the line.

Similar people who criticized me last year for my concerns are the same ones trying to give all the excuses why we shouldn't worry again this year.

Not everyone is doing it, but some.

The funny thing is the excuses sound the same as last year.

The concern is simple. This O line needed to upgrade 4 positions from last year.

LT, RT, C and LG

This line is significantly better than last year.

We made a Perfect upgrade at LT.

We made a solid to pretty good, IMO, upgrade at LG.

Didn't upgrade C or RT.

NOW, I believed out of all the needs, Center was the last priority. I felt dieter was the best of the worst.

Dieter atleast graded as a start, albeit 29th out of 32. Where as our LT, LG, and RT didn't rank in the top 70. None starter material.

So the move of Williams to Center felt counter productive to me. I truly believed with Williams at LG, RT was the only true potential weak spot.

I do trust the coaches. So I will wait and see on his move to Center.

But that move to Center means we have to rely on Eich and Jackson being good.

If they stink it up again ,and Williams struggles at Center the only true upgrade we made was at LT.

WITH that said, if Williams continues to struggle, I would hope Tretter gets a call.

I honestly believe the releasing of Butler facilitated a potential run at a lineman. If necessary.

Additionally, the Saints also should be contacted. They have 2 quality centers. Now neither may be available, who knows.

There's a reason I was pounding the table for Linderbaum..however, I'll take Tyreke all day every day lol.

I trust these coaches, I am a lot more optimistic this year then i was last year. I am not in " we need to make a move" territory yet.

But, last year I said it was an "obvious problem"

If Williams continues to struggle It becomes an "obvious problem" again.

I hope there's a plan in place.

Again, I trust these coaches. Our worst cse scenario is still better than last years line.

But it's just funny to me how I'm reading the same excuses this year, that I read last year, that deals with an obvious problem IMO.

We shall see

Luckily, we have the cap( this year) and draft picks to make a move. We also have coaches and a GM who would be willing to make a move to fix the problem IMO.

Also, get on the phone with Chicago. See what they want got Jenkins. Williams and a late round pick. If u need to, rest him for the year and maybe you can salvage something
I always a appreciate a well thought out post.
Nice job.

This move is certainly a calculated risk. If it works, then we will have filled the hole with a young, mid-career player and cheaply too. ...and in this day and age, the salary cap says you can't sign expensive players at every position.

If it doesn't work, Dieter wasn't bad, he's an average sort of player and certainly better than most of what is currently available on the street.

But not every move works.
EXACTLY !

The time was in FA and the draft, very disappointing they did not address it. I would be careful counting on Dieter as the answer- both from injury and talent level standpoints.

OL has been bad for nearly 15 years now. Every year we read reports in camp that the OL is sucking, people are concerned, but we're told it's just OTAs, wait until Camp, Camp comes they still suck, we're told not to worry until they put pads on, preseason comes they still suck, then we're told not to worry until the bullets start flying, regular season comes and they still suck and we're told they need time to jell, it's halloween and its pretty obvious the OL sucks when the signs were there back in the spring lol

They did address it, just not to your liking - admit it. - LOL

It’s like a broken record.

It’s ridiculous that some posters have already concluded that moving Williams to center is a mistake. He is obviously learning a new position but that doesn’t mean he will not have success at the center position.

He hasn’t played a single game at the position yet, but some people are already claiming that the coaching staff has made a mistake. My view is the coaching staff feels Williams will be better than Deiter and that’s why they decided to replace Deiter by moving Williams into that position.

I have no idea if Williams will be effective at center but I certainly trust the coaching staff and their decision making over the naysayers on here who have already determined Williams will fail at the center position.

I would also have liked to see the Dolphins add another center in free agency or the draft but it didn’t happen and unless they decide to add a center in the next few weeks, I have no problem with Williams being the starting center this coming season.

When the player you brought in to play center wasn’t a center and is having continued snap problems- no they did not address it.

Not in a matter most teams would.
Let me see.

1) "When the player you brought in to play center wasn’t a center" -
He had played center for a short time.
So, you are RONG, they demonstrably did address it!

Apparently, our coaching staff saw something they liked in him at center.
They also seemed to be satisfied with Dieter enough to keep at center while looking for other centers. They probably felt that any of his weaknesses could be "coached up".

The Front Office and the Coaching staff were clearly looking at improving this position, along with several others. Their trades and draft picks show this.

They have different opinions and priority levels than you do.

I will almost always agree with their selections because I feel they have significantly better information than most fans.

"Ray is Right " - LOL
