I started a thread raising the question of running up the score against the pats and it got me thinking...What makes running up the score so bad? I mean technically it is a tie breaker if you have the same record and same head to head record. The PF column of a team can determine who goes to the play-offs. Imagine if we didn't go to the play-offs because we couldn't pass the Pats PF stat. Imagine if it was only by 2 points. Remember we could have easily scored at least a field goal in our final drive.

In professional sports I have no problem with running up the score. Do it if you want, but there are risks involved. (players getting hurt)

I think i may be; however, becuase this was the Pats and they did it everyone last year, including us, i would have gone for a touch down everytime!

unethical? no.

not sure where ethics could relate to a football score?

It's just not smart. For several reasons. Why risk injury? Why disrespect your opponent? Why make the game last any longer than it has to. If you have already achieved victory, which was your ultimate goal when stepped on the field....handle it gracefully.

Is it unethical? No.

Is it smart? Probably not.

Why risk injuring your players just trying to pile points on the other team? You risk pissing them off and having them take a cheap shot at your QB or another important player.

On the other hand, if the other team has run it up on you in the recent past, all bets are off.

I dont think we ran up the score on the pats last week. they have alot of weapons and could have come back if we pulled the reigns. Not to mention, they needed payback for running it up on us last year. (So I was actually hoping we would run it up on them)

First, the Pats have been known to run the score up on teams. So if they complained about the score they really had no right too.

Second, This is professional football now. Imagine in the working world if you were now the number 1 store selling shoes in a America and you stopped selling shoes for the rest of the year because you didn't want to hurt the other shoe store owners feelings. That's crazy right?

Well IMO it's the same thing here. Winning and winning big Keeps butts in the seats, keeps people buying your merchandise, and in turn keeps your team succeeding.

when we finally get to the point where we can run up the score in almost every game, and teams can't stop us...and i believe we'll get there....i say we do it against the Pats every time,i mean up in the 50s and even 60s if possible...they did it against a few teams last year,so why not return the favor....

 good post

Here's the way i see it: If you are up 40-10 and keep attempting to score, how is that any different from leading 35-0 and keeping your first team defense on the field to try and secure the shutout?

No difference in my mind. These players are adults who make an incredible living playing football. Screw them if they feel insulted bc a team runs up the score.

It is not unethical to run the score up. Nevermind injuries and all that. The defense gets paid more money then I'll ever see in my life to make plays and stop their opponents.

They can't do it, they don't deserve to lose by only 7.

I mean there is the possibility of even letting henne come in and sling it out. I would run it up against division rivals. I would hate to be that team that didn't make the play-offs by two points.

big leads dont mean S***......NFL teams when given the chance will make a comeback.....I think to a point it could be....like for example.....your down 45-3 with like 5 minutes and the other team is still throwing 60 yard passes lol

I believe they made the first tie breaker points against, to discourage running up the score.
