Remember when the bossman said he didnt want any rookie holdouts? Well, now Jason Allen is basically the last rookie holding out, and there is really nothing Wayne can do about it.. He must be quite upset about this.

IMO, Nick Saban is the one making Wayne look like a fool. For better or worse, Allen's agent Mitch Frankel has a history of NOT holding out, and getting rookie deals done very early. Miami insists on a 6 year deal even though the market clearly dictates 5 years, and when he cared to explain it he just said I don't care what other teams do I only care what our team does. Nice explanation. Harkens back to the "because I said so" days of childhood.

Now, Frankel concedes the 6th year but the Dolphins are refusing to make the deal sweeter because of the 6th year. They're clearly being unreasonable. They'll get their way, but I'm not surprised by the holdout. Nick Saban is testing the limits of the authority Wayne gave him.

Interesting.. Ya, it does seem that they are playing hardball with Allen.

As I see it, the most recent "comp" in the market is actually a 6 year deal, at the high end of guaranteed money on what Frankel's asking, and that was for a player 2 picks before Allen. Something at or a little below of the bottom of the requested range of guaranteed money is reasonable based on that comparable transaction, and is where this will ultimately settle.

But the market doesn't "dictate" 5 years. It may be the most common arrangement in the market, but the only thing that is clear is that 6 years is doable and not unreasonable.

hes not making wayne look bad hes saving wayne some money that the young kid doesnt deserve anyway allen should have been the first to sign because we reached for him in the draft other wise he would be making second round miney

I agree to a certain extent, but wouldn't Wayne be better served by just shutting his yapper when when he wants to discuss football related matters?? I remmber this immortal line also....."I'm hoping he's our next Dan Marino" when referring to AJ Feeley.....or was it spelled Feely? AAAHHH Who cares now?? :sidelol:

I agree. This one sits sqaurely on the shoulders of our front office.

I consider Wayne to be a man of his word, taking a little one on the chin in this matter.

He has always kept his hands out of football, and even though he looks bad because he doesn't want any holdouts (yet there is one), he is staying true to his word and not forcing anything on the team.

If anything, I respect Wayne for not forcing anything just for the sake of his own pride.

Yes I agree, in the end Wayne made Wayne look like a fool by making a promise nobody was prepared to keep.

Somebody probably forgot to tell Wayne that they planned on insisting on a 6 year deal because the CBA laid out explicit language banning the use of 6 year contracts on picks #17 and below. In other words, the CBA itself opened up the possibility of every team in the top 16 to insist on 6 year deals. The Eagles and Dolphins clearly intended to be market leaders in that move, which probably WILL end with every team in the top 16 insisting on 6 year deals in future drafts.

As for the market, the market has clearly called for a 5 year contract. Not only this year's market, but last year's as well. Last year, I believe the top two picks are the only picks that signed 6 year deals. Nick Saban isn't paying attention to the market, he's paving a new one.

In the meantime, Jason Allen is the first victim, and for that he will hold out. All the power to him. I can't stand these fans that don't understand the situation and just say "Jason needs to sign and get in camp blah blah blah". He's not under contract. He doesn't have to do anything.

Thats the way I feel too. The guy agrees to the 6 yrs and now the Dolphins low ball him on the guarantees? I understand the business side of it and the fact that there is going to be some negotiating but you'd think since were going into week 2 of camp and Wayne said he didn't want hold outs that the FO would make a better(fairer) offer.
