In his previous 2 years, Coyles D has finished a very respectable 7th & 8th in Pts against. This year he has the Dolphins D ranking 4th.

Previously we have had forums calling for his head and I will take it in on chin, in saying that I was one of them.

When you look at our starting D, only Jared Odrick was a 1st round pick. In his tenure as DC, he has probably had the worst set of LB's in all the league. We havnt invested heavily with draft picks bar Dion Jordan, who many feel was a player best suited to 3-4 OLB.

IMO, I am not the biggest fan of Joe Philbin, but the biggest argument for keeping him in Miami, is the fact he has 2 excellent co-ordinators, one who is on his way up and one who is the most underrated and under appreciated in the NFL

Shhhhh- don't tell other teams. Keep him here.

I'm most impressed with how he elevates DB play through scheme and pass rush.

I've honestly been dumbfounded how much hate he's gotten on this message board. I know there are a lot of clueless people, but it still amazes me how much crap our defense and Kevin Coyle has consistently gotten the past 3 years (this year included) while we have had a consistently bottom 10 offense in every major statistical category. This year he's finally starting to get a little recognition by the dummies on this message board purely because our offense is A LITTLE BIT more balanced this season.

Last year, when Philbin and Sherman were on the hot seat, it was widely reported that Coyle's job was safe.

So to answer your question - no, I don't believe he's undervalued - I just think people on this message board, for the most part, have a [seemingly] poor understanding of how football works.

dunno about nfl wide but sure as hell has been on this board for the last year and a half

Coyle is a decent coach. He knows what he's doing and it is significant that players are continuing to improve. For all of the fanfare of the greatness of Rex and Rob Ryan's Defenses, Kevin Coyle is getting results with a minimum of fuss.
Maybe some credit should also go to Joe Philbin in not messing it up.

Not in my living room, he's not.

Some Bengal forum posters would like to see them fire Marvin (who's actually fooled more people for the longest time) and bring back Coyle to replace him. Right now Todd Bowles in the media coordinator du jour - and rightfully so; he's doing a fantastic job out there in Glendale.

well, since we ain't won a division title or posted the AFC's Best D (nor the Leauge's) on his watch.. imo that'd be a strong NO..

just saying

I remember when the Bengals swept every team in their division. I think he was their DC.

That is a MAJOR accomplishment, beating the Steelers and Ravens each twice.

He was their DB coach. He's impressed me a lot this year, prior years not as much, but this year he might have the right pieces he needs to run his defense effectively.

I agree that Coyle is a good DC, and I agree that Philbin deserves credit for assembling a good staff.

I think his creativity is definitely underappreciated... He doesn't just run some basic, or tried-and-true formula, he is pretty out there with his formations and alignments. Sometimes it bites him in the ass (his penchant for putting DEs in coverage), but it's really something to see when it's going full tilt.
