Active Roster
DAVIE, Fla. – There was a rookie linebacker who stood above the rest at Miami Dolphins' rookie camp last weekend.
Undrafted rookie Mike Hull from Penn State, also known as “Linebacker U,” was active and consistently around the football in Miami's four practices. He also got an impressive interception in team drills on Saturday.
Hull got off to a good start at rookie camp, but it's only the first step with the Dolphins.
“This has been a dream for as long as I can remember,” Hull said of getting his chance in the NFL. “It’s a great opportunity. I’m just out here competing every day. ... I want to do everything I can to make this team.”
Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey has a track record in Miami of finding talent with undrafted rookies.
In 2014, Hickey’s first season with the Dolphins, undrafted players Chris McCainand Damien Williams both made the 53-man roster and contributed in the regular season. McCain blocked a punt and sacked New England Patriotsquarterback Tom Brady last year, and Williams rushed for 122 yards as a backup tailback behind starter Lamar Miller.
Can Hull be Miami’s next undrafted find?
It’s no secret the Dolphins need linebacker help. Miami was ranked 24th against the run last season, and a big part of that was attributed to inconsistent play at the position. The Dolphins made a major overhaul at the position this offseason by cutting veteran linebacker Phillip Wheeler, trading Dannell Ellerbe and letting key backup Jason Trusnik walk in free agency.
That’s opened plenty of opportunities at the position for players like Hull. He is competing with fellow undrafted linebackers Jeff Luc and Zach Vigil for roster spots.
“I like the group that we brought in,” Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said of the three undrafted linebackers. “They seem to be guys that are real serious. They’re football guys. They’ve been productive players in college.”
Hull’s production last season was very strong. He started 13 games for the Nittany Lions and recorded 140 tackles, two sacks and an interception. Hull was expected to get drafted two weeks ago, but that didn’t happen.
“I don’t worry about it now; I can’t control that,” Hull said of his draft status. “That’s in the past. I’m just thankful to be here, and I’m trying to make the most of the situation and doing everything I can to help the organization.”
