For the Miami Dolphins, upgrading the linebacking corp in 2015 is a top priority. For the second time in 3 years two of their linebackers will be cut or released. The good news is the free agent market doesn't look bad this year for linebackers but again spending will be an issue or at least having money to work with will be an issue. A solid free agent linebacker that has been linked to Miami is Mason Foster, Tampa Bay buccaneers.
Why Forster ? Why Miami ?
The Dolphins don't have the ammunition to hit too many home runs in free agency this year, they almost will have to settle for some bargain hunting. Mason Forster is already familiar with current Miami GM Dennis Hickey and he is not going to command a lot of money. He is considered a second-tier free agent linebacker.
He’s a leader on defense, a great motor, high character, vocal leader. He takes great routes to the ball and has very nice run instincts. He doesn’t have the best athleticism, but he gets by. He’s more of a run stuffer than a sideline to sideline guy and he doesn’t cover that well, but he can play both outside and inside in a 4-3 and inside in a 3-4.
Since entering the league as a third-round pick out of Washington in 2011, Foster leads all players from that class in career tackles. This year, despite missing five games because of injury, he is still fifth on the team in tackle. He is an above average starter at the next level, someone who racks up 100+ tackles every year, provides leadership, and does all the things he needs to for you to win the game. He’s a strong character guy who can play special teams if need be, but I think he’s good enough as a linebacker that it shouldn’t need be.
