Here's the dilemma: Mike Wallace is the Dolphins' best threat, the one player defenses fear, the receiver who ran open deep last year more than any Dolphin in two decades and whose role must be expanded for a scoring-challenged offense.

And he's not trusted to do more.
He might not be built for it, either.

Joe Philbin was asked Saturday about various players, and he ladled the positive, in order, about guard Daryn Colledge ("A real professional"), rookie Ju'Wuan James ("Very smart, very aware"), veteran Cameron Wake's work ethic ("It's great") and the cornerbacks as a group ("I like what I see").
It's hard to get Philbin to utter anything off the pithy, positive script. But when Philbin was asked how Wallace can improve, it was like a switch went off to deliver a more sophisticated message.

Translation: Wallace isn't running disciplined routes to be where quarterback Ryan Tannehill expects him to be. That's disturbing.

This makes sense. I know something seems to be wrong with the connection between the two. Evidently this is one of Landry's strengths, being in the right place at the right time, along with good hands, etc.

Don't post stuff like that...it's all Tannehill's fault, remember? :err:

Route running is underrated by many observers...hell, Jerry Rice was the all-time greatest at the WR position, and he didn't have near Wallace's speed. He didn't have Wallace's lack of discipline in running routes, or semi-stone hands at times either.

I think the route running thing was a problem early on, but if you noticed as the season went on, he got better at the short stuff, much to many peoples shagrin. Cant have it both ways.

The play vs. New England over the middle was tits. This is more of what I want to see. He gets a step on a timing route placed in his mits, he's gone!

Granted, I seem negative this week, even to myself. I don't get statements like this of his however.
"I was trying to worry [last year] about coming in, getting to know the guys, fitting in, knowing the coaches, knowing the system, just a lot."
If you can't expect a pro like Wallace to to be able to handle more, like put in overtime learning routes and catching extra balls, how do you demand the rookies to do it.
Do we expect the line to do extra work? or this year, should they just get to know each other. I expected so much more from him and the big move we made to get him.
This deep ball issue really bugs me. Two pro's have been working at this for a year! I can't wait to feel impressed and feel the good vibes others feel, it just ain't happening fast enough for me.

Kinda trashed Wallace the whole article..but its whatever not surprised.

Not worried about what some beat writer has to say about Wallace. He's been a professional about the under throws and he's busting his butt to help us get wins. He could've easily pointed the finger, theres been times where he was WIDE OPEN and Tanny couldn't hit him in stride. Get him the ball and he's gone! Last year was his first year, it def takes time to gain that chemistry and trust with one another. I'm expecting great things from him and Tanny this year, with help from Gibson, Hartline, Clay, and Landry underneath both these guys will have a great season. Just hope we can run in it so we're not so predictable.

Wallace is a known product.

Tannehill will make or break this season, with decent oline play.

Ah...but will we get decent O-line play?

I''m not worried about left tackle this year....but it seems to me with Pouncey's situation, were asking Alot from most of the rest of the line with little or no NFL starts under their belt.........

Then....we're asking them to gel into a cohesive unit right away?

Seems a bit unrealistic to me to expect too much.

This is what worries me.....in year one Tannehill had very weak receiving Corp...the worst I'be ever seen in Dolphin history.

Year 2...the worst O-line I've ever seen in Dolphin history.

Now in year 3....We are throwing together a patchwork line with 5 New starters in week 1...and expecting Tannehill and Co. To take the next step...join the elite in the NFL.

And if they don't...is Tannehill going to be blamed?

i hate dave hyde , he is an idiot, tries to look smart and only puts up articles up now an then to create more of a demand for him, mostly he writes nonsense, stuff that if i would be the player, i would never ever talk to him again, using his stupid smiling picture that is probably 10+ years old doesnt help either.

I see this Wallace long ball thing overblown and it didnt hit as much last year for multiple reasons.

1. expectations of it, in Pittsburgh, Rapelisberger hit him deep often due to him escaping the pocket like he does so many times and then heaving. We are not set up like that.
2. Sherman made Wallace very visible by being vanilla in lining up. Any fool can see that Sherman was the biggest hindurance of any problems we had minus Incog/Martin and the OL dilemna half way.

Those two are the biggest IMO. If he is a one trick pony and you believe it, then you shouldnt expect 1500 yards out the guy. If you believe he is more than that, then its more likely to see that number or closer to it than last year. Long balls are a crap shoot most of the time especially since teams would double cover him.

Wallace isn't feared for his route running it's how he can blow the lid on the defense. Lazor will take advantage of his speed and move him around and put him in motion to keep his releases clean. Sherman didn't do that. Go watch Wallace in Pit, they moved him a lot and many times his speed turn a quick slant into a long gain. Wallace will have a huge year this year in Lazor's offense.

Hyde is the best read you're going to get from Dolphin beat writers. I'm on the Wallace band wagon still, but I check him through this " adjustment" to see if his attitude goes south. Tan has to step up his long ball accuracy, he even missed a few other guys long. So it's not one of his strengths. Shore the O line up and take away the excuses.
