I've heard several fans complain that our early round draft picks aren't starting or playing much. But I actually think that's a good thing (for the most part). This is a sign that the talent on the roster is getting much better. Example. We drafted Jordan with the 3rd overall pick, but he's not starting because O. Vernon and C Wake are playing well. 2. We drafted 2 CB's one in the second and one in the 4th... and neither of them can start because their veteran counter parts are playing well (Grimes, Patterson and Carroll (as of late). Would I like to see the youngsters play? Yes, however, not if the vets are playing well. Now what I'm not happy with is D. Thomas not being able to start on this offensive line that had been terrible up until a couple weeks ago, but the I don't think the lack of playing time is a indictment on the draftees I thinks its a sign that our talent is getting better.

It's only good if they have impact. Being on the bench does nothing for us as a team and as value.

Since you are talking about Ireland, you know its the bad kind. One good teams with lots of talent, it is acceptable. On a team like ours with holes all over the place, especially OL, LB, RB, DB - it is bad. When your 3rd overall pick doesn't start and doesn't have a real position, it is bad.

A talent like Jordan needs to see the field more, what they are doing now with him makes much more sense by moving Vernon inside on pass rushing downs. Get the best horses on the field. The problem is yes some vets are playing well but its guys like Stanford, Wilson getting time over the rooks. Now if Davis does in practice like he did last game there is a reason hes not seeing the field. How about Thomas not getting time with all the guards being down. There have been times when some of the young guys could have seen the field. I'm all for developing guys but I want to make sure the best players are also on the field.

The fireland mob have it partly right IMHO...

The 49er's last year didn't start any of their rookies if memory serves. They didn't start because the starters on the team were better.

Not starting rookies is NOT and NEVER is the problem. Brett Farve didn't play as a rookie.

The REAL problem is that they keep signing free agents at core positions because they have not been able to draft starters.

Signing some impact free agents is great, but constantly having to sign linebackers & O-line men is a problem.

I think Ireland has done some good things, maybe over time the team will be mostly made up of drafted players, who knows...

Impact is relative. But is the draft pick considered a bust even if the vets in front of them are playing well. I remember the old UM days when players like Willis Mcgehee, Jeremy shockey, Frank Gore etc.. couldn't see the field because the guys in front of them were better or just as good. Didn't mean they sucked just that the vets were better.

Stanford over the rooks is questionable... although that wasn't the case yesterday as Will Davis saw time when Carroll went out. Also, the other rookie the 2nd round pick saw playing time over Sanford earlier in the year. But remember both those guys missed training camp time and that's when you earn spots. During the season there's not much practicing to win positions going on as the team is preparing for the next game.

Oh and Thomas not seeing the field is pathetic as a 3rd round draft pick. Hope he gets better next year.

IMHO, and Im no genius..........if you have so much talent at a position that your 1st rd (3rd overall) and 2nd rd picks arent seeing the field, maybe they shouldnt have been drafted.

I know Ill be eating my words when Jordan has 15 sacks next year. But for the most part, we drafted positions that we seem to be stock piled at. D-Line and the secondary. I would like Taylor to step up, but if Patterson can stay healthy Im fine with him.

We should have spent a couple more pics on O-Line.........and I said that before the Martin fiasco.

I'll give you the oline as having holes. But I'm not ready to say our LB core has holes. i'll reserve judgement for another, let the new guys get another offseason in this system. RB is questionable, but they had a know commodity in Bush but let him go. They gambled and so far they are losing that bet. And i'd say DB is the STRENGTH of the team. Grimes and Patterson is one of the best CB tandems in the league. And i think Carroll has filled in amicably considering teams will automatically throw at him over Grimes.

Our record says that we are an average team so some of our rooks should be able to contribute. Theres no reason for Dallas Thomas to not see the field unless he is absolutely putrid, which may be the case.

The way the league is now with the passing rules and every team throwing the ball more than they are running it.... You can NEVER have enough pass rushers and CB's so i can understand why they drafted Jordan and the DB's. Also going into last years draft.. DE and CB were question marks. One injury to Wake or Vernon and we would have been dead in the water for pass rush. We didn't know how good Grimes would be. Everyone wanted patterson cut so we didnt' know what he would give us, and we let go of Sean Smith and cut traded V. Davis. So we needed CB help. Grimes turned out to be Great, same with Patterson barring the injuries. And Nolan Carroll has been a pleasant surprise. Oline was a Question mark going into the draft however if we had taken a olineman with our 1st pick everyone INCLUDING MYSELF would have been calling for Ireland's head.

That.... or the fact that we put a bunch of NEW PIECES on the field at one time might be contributing to the inconsistent play. We've beaten some good teams and lost to some bad teams. But I think we should stay the course, add to the team, not get rid of known commodities like we did last year (Reggie Bush) and see what happens next year. And yes I agree D. Thomas not being able to play is a disgrace

past is gone. draft nothing but offensive linemen in 2014. if we hit on 4 of them the team will be radically improved.

ok tell me who has been our best draft pick in the last 3 drafts?who was our 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th best picks in the last 3 years
